Chapter 23: Chapter 23
Riley’s POV
"Do you think Obsidian Veil is the same as Crescent Hollow where you came from?" Calistus says, his voice low and sharp.
I lift my eyes to him, and that is when I see it.
His eyes are no longer normal. They glow. They burn in a molten yellow color that makes my stomach twist and my skin prickle. The room feels tighter suddenly.
Fear rushes through me fast but I clamp it down. I refuse to give him the satisfaction of seeing it on my face. I keep my chin up, even though my heart is beating so loudly I swear everyone can hear it.
Before I can respond, another voice cuts in, sharp and commanding.
"Mr. Calistus," Gunnar growls, his tone dangerous. "That’s enough."
Calistus stiffens. His glowing eyes flicker, then slowly fade back to normal like nothing ever happened. He exhales through his nose and leans back slightly, clearly irritated.
Honestly, I am terrified.
But I refuse to show it.
What the hell is this place?
Caden speaks next, his voice calm but firm. "My father will be here soon. It would be better if you maintained composure."
Calistus clenches his jaw but nods. "Very well."
Before I can even process what that means, the doors open again. ƒreewebɳovel.com
Two girls walk in quietly, both dressed in simple dark clothing. They carry trays filled with food I cannot even identify. The plates look strange. The colors are unfamiliar. Nothing about it looks like normal human meals. They set everything down carefully on the table, bow politely, and turn to leave.
One of them, though, sways her hips intentionally as she passes the brothers, her eyes lingering a little too long. I sigh softly and look away. Whatever this is, it is none of my business.
Just then, the aura in the room changes slightly and somehow I am able to feel it. I feel it before I see it.
A presence. Commanding and powerful.
I look up.
An older man walks in, tall and broad, with sharp features that immediately explain where the brothers got their striking looks from. His hair is darker, streaked lightly with gray, and his posture alone screams authority. Beside him is a woman clinging to his arm, beautiful in a demure way, her lips curved into a knowing smirk that makes my skin crawl for reasons I cannot explain.
The tension in the room changes instantly.
Even the brothers seem different now. Still confident, but guarded. Like this man is someone they do not fully trust.
He stops at the table and slowly looks around, his eyes assessing everything and then his gaze lands on me,
"And you are?" he asks.
His voice is deep and heavy with authority. It reminds me of Gunnar’s, but older and more cruel.
I freeze. I do not know what to say.
Before I can speak, Cane steps forward.
"She’s our wife, Sebastian" he says casually.
My head snaps toward him. freeωebnovēl.c૦m
What?
My heart jumps straight into my throat. Did he just say that out loud? In front of everyone?
I open my mouth, but nothing comes out. Too many thoughts crash into each other at once. Wife? Who decided that? When did I agree to this? What the hell is happening?
The man raises a brow and takes a seat beside the woman, who immediately glares at me like I have personally insulted her.
"Wife?" the man repeats slowly. "Interesting."
"You boys are really quick," he continues, shaking his head slightly. "Getting married so fast. But you will not be sharing one woman. I already said each of you should get a different woman, not one for all three of you."
My breath catches.
Sharing? For all three?
Before I can even wrap my head around that, Gunnar speaks.
"She’s our mate," he says firmly, his gaze locked on the older man. "And you know it."
The room goes quiet.
Wait.
Mate?
I turn to Gunnar so fast my neck almost hurts. Did he just call me that? My mind screams questions, but my body feels frozen.
The older man laughs, a slow amused sound then turns to the woman beside him.
"Can you hear them, honey?" he says mockingly. "Is the Moon Goddess now stupid enough to pair one woman with three Alphas? And Alphas at that? Doesn’t it sound ridiculous?"
The woman smirks, her eyes never leaving me.
This is getting out of hand. My heart pounds so hard it makes me dizzy.
Then Calistus speaks again. "My dear friend," he says coolly, "not only that, this woman here is my son’s wife."
The older man stiffens.
His eyes snap back to me, sharp and assessing.
"What?" he asks.
The room feels like it might explode.
"She is married to Ethan," Calistus continues. "Legally and publicly."
The older man leans back slowly, studying me like I am a puzzle he does not like.
"Well," he says after a moment, "this just keeps getting more interesting."
The woman beside him laughs softly. "So she belongs to another man already?"
I finally find my voice.
"I do not belong to anyone," I say firmly.
Every head turns toward me."I am not property," I continue. "I am not a prize. And I did not agree to any of this."
The older man studies me closely now. "You speak boldly for a human."
I swallow. "I speak honestly Sir"
Sebastian—because I realize now that is his name leans forward. "If you are married, why are you here then?"
I glance at Calistus. Then at the brothers. Then back at Sebastian.
"Because your sons dragged me into this mess," I say bluntly. "And everyone seems to think they get to decide my life without asking me."
Caden smiles slightly. "You were brought here for a reason."
"And what reason is that?" I snap at him.
Gunnar steps closer. "You are our mate."
Sebastian sighs. "The Goddess must be nuts when pairing this, I will not accept a human as my son’s mate."
"I didn’t ask for any of this and please I would love to leave this place."
The woman beside Sebastian narrows her eyes. "Careful, human girl."
I turn toward her. "I am being very careful Mrs"
Calistus scoffs. "It does not change the fact that she is married to my son."
"And what of it?" Gunnar challenges. "Your son broke the bond first and opened their marriage, if she wants an out you can’t force it or is because she’s—"
Calistus slams his hand on the table, cutting off whatever Gunnar was about to say"You will not disrespect my family in my presence."
The tension spikes so sharply my skin tingles. Cane steps forward now. "Respect is earned Mr Calistus"
