Chapter 156: Chapter 156
Cane’s POV
Everything hurt.
Not in a way I could control or ignore, but in a way that felt like something inside me was breaking apart and forcing itself into something else at the same time.
My breathing was uneven, heavy, and I could hear it too clearly in my own ears, like every inhale scraped through my chest and every exhale came out rough and unstable.
I tried to move, but my body didn’t respond the way it should.
It felt wrong.
My muscles kept tightening on their own, pulling and locking in ways that made it hard to stay still, and every time I tried to steady myself, another wave of pain hit me harder than the last.
The bite burned.
It wasn’t just pain, it was something spreading through me slowly like it had a mind of its own and it was taking over piece by piece.
I clenched my jaw, trying to fight it.
Trying to stay in control.
But it wasn’t working.
A low sound left my throat, not even words, just a rough growl that I couldn’t stop, and it made my chest tighten because I knew what that meant.
I was losing it.
The room around me was already a mess.
Furniture knocked over.
Things are broken already, by who? By me.
My clothes were half torn and thrown somewhere behind me because I couldn’t stand the way they felt against my skin anymore.
Everything felt too tight. Too much.
I dragged a hand through my hair, trying to focus, trying to hold onto something real, but my thoughts kept slipping, like I couldn’t keep them in place for more than a few seconds.
Then suddenly—
The door burst open.
The sound hit sharp and loud, and my head snapped toward it immediately, my body reacting on instincts which was strange.
Caden walked in.
Summer was with him.
I froze for a second, staring at them, my breathing still uneven, my chest rising and falling too fast.
Caden’s eyes moved quickly around the room, taking in everything, the broken pieces, the mess, the fucking damage, and then they landed on me.
"What happened here?" he asked.
I tried to answer.
I really did. fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm
I opened my mouth, forcing myself to speak, to explain, to tell him to get out before it got worse.
But the only thing that came out was a low, strained growl.
His expression changed immediately. His eyes widened slightly.
Before he could say anything else, another wave hit me.
Stronger this time.
It tore through me, sharp and sudden, and I couldn’t hold it back.
My body reacted on its own.
I moved.
Fast. Too damn fast.
I lunged at him without thinking, my vision narrowing, my control slipping completely for a second.
But Caden reacted just as fast.
He grabbed Summer and pulled her out of the way instantly, moving her behind him just as my fist slammed hard into the wall where he had been standing.
The impact cracked it.
I felt it.
The force went through my arm, but it didn’t stop me.
It only made everything worse.
Caden’s eyes widened at the damage.
"No..." he muttered under his breath. "Something is wrong with you Cane."
I barely heard him.
Because the next wave hit me bad, and this one was worse.
My head felt like it was splitting, my vision blurring at the edges, my body forcing itself forward again before I could stop it.
I lunged again.
This time, he wasn’t fast enough.
My fist connected with his stomach, hard enough to knock the air out of him, and he staggered back with a painful groan.
"Summer, get out!" he ordered immediately, his voice strained but firm.
The little girl didn’t hesitate.
She turned and ran out of the room.
And for a split second—
I wanted to go after her.
The thought came fast.
Wrong.
But strong.
My body shifted toward the door.
But before I could move, Caden grabbed me from behind and slammed me back against the wall.
The impact didn’t slow me down. If anything, it made the anger inside me spike harder.
He held me there, his grip tight, his strength matching mine just enough to keep me in place.
"Cane, what is going on?" he demanded.
I tried to focus on his voice.
Tried to hold onto it.
Another growl tore out of me, rough and strained, but this time I forced words through it.
"Leslie..." I managed, my voice breaking in between the growls. "Ask Leslie... to give you the damn medicine..."
My head dropped forward slightly, my breathing heavy and unstable.
"I’m losing it," I said, the words coming out harsher now.
And before I could stop myself—
I hit him again.
My fist connected with his side, and he grunted but didn’t let go.
"Cane!" he snapped, trying to shake me back into focus.
"Gravemaws..." I forced out, my voice strained. "I was bitten... infected... when I fought them... trying to get the antidote for Summer..."
The moment I said it, everything went quiet for a second.
Caden froze. ƒrēewebnovel.com
"You were bitten by Gravemaws?" he asked, disbelief clear in his voice.
I didn’t answer. I couldn’t.
Because the next wave hit, and this one was worse than all the others.
My body jerked violently, my muscles tightening painfully as it spread deeper all my whole body.
My vision blurred again, and this time, it didn’t clear properly.
Everything looked different. Sharpened. Wrong.
Caden’s grip tightened on me.
"Cane..." he said, but I could hear the change in his voice now.
Fear.
Gravemaws didn’t have a cure.
Everyone knew that.
Every creature avoided them.
Because once you were bitten—
That was it.
Seven days.
That was all it took.
Seven days of losing control, of going mad, of craving flesh, until there was nothing left.
I could feel it already.
The pull.
The hunger.
It wasn’t normal.
It wasn’t mine.
But it was there. And it was getting damn stronger.
Another growl tore out of me, louder this time, more aggressive, and I struggled against Caden’s hold, my body trying to break free, trying to act on instincts I didn’t want.
"Hold it together!" he shouted.
"I’m trying!" I snapped back, but it came out mixed with another growl, making it sound more animal than human.
My hands clenched into fists, my entire body shaking as I fought against it, but every second it got harder.
My control was slipping faster now.
My thoughts were breaking apart.
I could feel it.
And Caden knew it too.
He adjusted his grip, pushing me harder against the wall, keeping me pinned there even as I fought against him.
"You’re not going anywhere," he said firmly.
I laughed.
Or at least I tried to.
It came out wrong.
"You think you can hold me?" I muttered, my voice unstable.
"I don’t need to hold you forever," he replied. "Just long enough."
Another wave hit me.
Stronger.
My body jerked forward, and this time I broke his hold for a second, enough to swing at him again, forcing him to block and push me back.
We clashed again.
Each hit stronger than the last. Each movement faster. More aggressive.
I couldn’t stop it anymore.
It was taking over my entire body.
My breathing turned heavier, my vision darker at the edges, and the need to attack, to fight, to tear through something kept rising inside me.
Caden saw it.
He knew exactly what was happening.
And instead of stepping back—
He stepped closer. He planted himself right in front of me, his stance firm, his expression serious.
"We’ve come this far together, Cane," he said, his voice steady even as I struggled against myself.
I growled again, my body tensing, ready to strike.
"I will not let anything happen to you," he continued.
My vision flickered again as my control slipped further.
"So take it out on me."
And that was the first terrible choice of words he used because—
