Chapter 15: Chapter 15
Riley’s POV
Everything that is happening right now feels crazy and ridiculous, yet I cannot stop the way my heartbeat skips at her words.
"What’s your name?" I ask, my voice quieter than I want it to be.
She smiles, small and knowing. "I’m Summer."
"Summer?" I repeat, testing the name.
"Yes."
"Well, Summer," I say, trying to sound firm, "I’m going to disappoint you, but I won’t be going anywhere with a total stranger."
I dig my hand into my bag, pull out my wallet, and take out ten crisp hundred-dollar bills. I hold the money out to her.
"Here. It’s a thousand dollars. Since you’re fine and you say you’re an Alpha, this should get you home to wherever you’re coming from, right?"
She stares at the money first, then lifts her eyes to mine. The stare is direct and piercing. It makes me feel exposed, like she can see every thought in my head. My fingers tighten around the bills.
"You’re a really stubborn one," she says, almost amused. "You’re the perfect fit."
I blink. "What are you talking about? Perfect fit for what?"
She tilts her head, still smiling. "Well, Mrs. Riley Grayson, I wonder why you’re still using your family name instead of your husband’s last name, Forlorn."
My mouth drops open. My stomach flips.
"How the hell do you know my husband?" I ask, the questions tumbling out fast. "Who the hell are you?"
She steps closer instead of answering. She gently pushes the money back toward me until I have no choice but to take it.
"I told you earlier that I’m an Alpha, right?" she says. "You don’t expect an Alpha in Crescent Hollow to be broke, do you?"
I stare at her in complete shock. My hand closes around the cash automatically.
She continues, her voice light, "I don’t need that money. But I do need something else." She pauses, takes a long breath like she is suddenly tired. "You’ll have to take me home, of course. Since you hit me with your car and my home is far, I probably won’t trek. Besides, I’m a little girl." She looks up at me with an expression that is almost funny, wide eyes and a tiny pout.
I raise an eyebrow. "You said earlier you were older than you look, and suddenly you’re a little girl again?"
She laughs, a clear, bright sound that fills the small hospital room. "Take me home, please."
I hesitate for a few seconds. My mind screams that this is insane. A child I hit with my car—who healed instantly, claims to be a werewolf Alpha, knows my full name and my marriage problems—is now asking for a ride home like it is the most normal thing in the world.
But something in her eyes stops me from saying no. Not fear. Not exactly. Curiosity, maybe. Or the fact that she looks so small and harmless right now, even after everything she just said.
"Alright," I say finally. "Let’s go."
I turn and walk out of the room. She follows right behind me, her footsteps quick and light. We leave the ward, pass the nurses’ station—none of them even glance at us and head out to the parking lot.
My car is still in the emergency lane where I left it. I open the passenger door for her. She hops in without hesitation, buckling her seatbelt like she has done this a hundred times. I close the door, walk around, and slide into the driver’s seat.
"Where to?" I ask as I start the engine.
She gives me an address on the far north side of Crescent Hollow, past the industrial district, near the edge of the forest preserve. It is at least a forty-minute drive.
I pull out of the hospital lot and merge onto the main road. The city traffic is light this time of day. I keep my eyes on the road, but my mind races.
"So," I say after a minute of silence, "you ran in front of my car on purpose just to meet me?"
I glance at her. She is staring out the window, legs swinging slightly because they don’t reach the floor.
"How old are you really?" I ask.
She turns her head and smiles. "Older than ten. Younger than a century." freeweɓnovel.cøm
"That’s not an answer."
"It’s the only one you get for now."
I grip the steering wheel tighter. "Who sent you?"
"People who are ruthless enough to ruin Crescent Hollow for a single human."
What the hell does that even mean?
I shake my head. "I’m human. I run a company. I have a husband—well, soon an ex-husband and that’s my life. I’m not part of any supernatural things here"
She laughs again. "You keep saying you’re human like it’s permanent."
I feel a chill. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing," she says quickly. "Just that labels change sometimes."
We drive in silence for a few minutes. I turn onto the highway that leads north. The buildings get shorter, the spaces between them wider.
I glance at her again. "So you know about Ethan?"
"I know enough."
"How?" freeweɓnovel.cѳm
"Alphas hear things."
I exhale slowly. "This is too much."
"I know," she says softly. "That’s why I didn’t just knock on your door. You wouldn’t have believed me."
"So you chose a car accident instead?"
"It worked, didn’t it?"
I almost laugh despite myself. "You’re unbelievable."
"Thank you."
The next twenty minutes pass with small talk. She asks about my favorite color (navy blue), if I like dogs (yes), and what music I listen to (mostly R&B when I’m driving alone). She tells me she likes vanilla ice cream and hates broccoli. Normal kid stuff. It feels strange after everything else.
We exit the highway and enter the quieter roads near the forest. The houses here are farther apart, larger, hidden behind trees.
"Turn left up here," she says.
I follow her directions down a private gravel road. Tall pines line both sides. The car bumps slightly.
"How much farther?" I ask.
"Almost there."
We round a bend, and a gate appears—tall iron bars with a security camera on top. It swings open before I even slow down.
I drive through slowly. The road curves again, and a house comes into view. A mansion. Three stories, stone and glass, lights already on even though it is daytime.
I stop the car in the circular driveway.
"This is your home?" I ask, staring.
"One of them," she says. She unbuckles her seatbelt and opens the door. "Come in."
I stay in my seat. "I brought you home. That’s it."
She looks back at me. "You need to meet them."
"Them who?"
"The people who sent me."
I shake my head. "No. I’m leaving."
She sighs. "Riley, please. Just five minutes. If you still want to go after that, I won’t stop you."
I look at the mansion. Then at her. Something in her voice sounds genuine.
"Five minutes," I say finally. "Then I’m gone."
She smiles. "Deal."
I turn off the engine and step out of the car. The air here smells clean and full of pine. The front door of the mansion opens as we walk up the steps.
"Hi, Daddies, I brought her home" Summer shouts as we approach an expanse living room I guess and just then I stop as I sight three familiar figures standing right there.
But not only that, there’s someone else standing beside them "Daphne?"
