Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Pseudo-man Experiment - The Doctor’s Commission
Complaints were one thing, but under the circumstances, all they could do was fall back on a traditional virtue of the Huaxia People.
We’re already here.
Temporarily ignoring the obviously crazy-looking mad scientist outside, the group of players argued for a long time inside a body they knew nothing about. After sorting through a large amount of information, they finally fell silent.
Based on the intelligence they exchanged, they managed to put together some useful information.
One: There were a total of four players in this instance, along with two pets.
Two: For whatever insane reason, the four players, one bird, and one dog had all been forcibly crammed into a single body.
As for that, Duan Fei’s response was a resounding ’Beats me.’
After greeting Cuihua and Bystander A, Duan Fei was just about to say hello to Darts Guest when he heard the guy say coldly, "I don’t talk to cheaters."
"Did you grow up eating shit or something? Why are you so rude?" Duan Fei asked, genuinely confused.
"You! Fine, let’s get this straight. I’m a Level 12 Darts Player. How did a Level 5 player like you manage to one-shot me?"
"I have good items."
"Good items, my ass! If you’ve got the guts, one-shot me right now! Can you do that?"
’Did this guy not only grow up eating shit, but get it all the way into his brain? We’re using the same body right now. How am I supposed to one-shot you? Am I supposed to commit suicide in my dreams or something?’
"You!"
"Alright, alright, everyone stop fighting."
Bystander A exasperatedly stopped the two of them. "We’ve all met before," he said. "Besides, I’m very familiar with Duan Someone’s skills. He’s not the type to cheat."
"...Fine. Since Bystander A is explaining, I’ll trust you for now. But don’t let me catch you messing up, you hear?"
’Darts Guest’s reaction was a bit surprising to Duan Fei. After all, the kid seemed like an arrogant chuuni who thought he was second only to God, yet he was surprisingly deferential to Bystander A.’
"Bystander A, you’re not, like, famous in real life, are you?" Duan Fei asked, curious.
"You could say I’m a little famous. I’m the vice-president of the Glory Club."
"That’s practically a celebrity!"
The gaming industry of the new world was highly developed, and with it, the status of gaming clubs had also risen.
The Glory Club was quite well-known among Professional Players. Its star members had decorated careers in various competitions, and their annual sponsorship earnings were in the hundreds of millions.
’No wonder a guy as arrogant as Darts Guest was so polite to Bystander A. So that was the connection.’
"Alright, everyone should learn from Cuihua. Look at him, he hasn’t said a single word of complaint."
Duan Fei sensed Cuihua’s presence. ’It’s not that he doesn’t have any complaints,’ he thought. ’It’s just that his social anxiety has flared up around strangers.’
Having established a role model, Bystander A continued, "I suggest we first look at the mission requirements. No holding back, no funny business. Everyone share your assigned task."
"Okay."
After a collective agreement, they all revealed their game objectives and discovered that the four players’ missions were identical.
"Main Quest: Assist the Doctor in completing his mission."
"The Doctor must be that guy outside," said Bystander A. "Since our mission is to assist him, we’re probably characters he created. Let me ask, has anyone here read the book *Frankenstein*?"
"I have!" Duan Fei immediately said.
"I’ve read it too!" said Yan Yuan.
"WOOF!" the pet dog also barked.
Cuihua and Darts Guest, who hadn’t read it, felt extremely awkward at that moment.
’Are birds and dogs this well-read these days?’
’They knew there were a lot of absurd things about the game *Abyss*, but having a bird and a dog be more well-read than the players? Who was that supposed to be an insult to?’
This outcome made even Bystander A a little awkward.
He had assumed it was a Beginner-level read in the sci-fi world, so he was a bit discomfited to find that two of them hadn’t read it.
He quickly moved past the issue and gave a simple summary of *Frankenstein*’s plot.
"To put it simply, *Frankenstein* is the story of a mad scientist who pieces together corpses and brings the result to life. The plot is fairly simple, but its impact at the time was profound. Can humanity possess the power of God? Does humanity have the right to play with life? The related debates have never ceased, even extending to the field of artificial intelligence today."
After listening to Bystander A, Darts Guest pondered for a moment, then said, "So you’re saying... we’re Frankenstein now?"
"That’s most likely it. Okay, the Doctor is probably getting impatient. Let’s try to get up."
Duan Fei tried to control their current body. He found that controlling it wasn’t the hard part; the hard part was coordination.
With six minds in a single body, even an action as simple as sitting up required all six to reach a consensus before they could slowly push themselves upright.
But the problem was, not all six of those minds were human.
Yan Yuan had no concept of "sitting up," and the dog named Jack had a skewed understanding of the idea. The end result was that the collective body slowly rolled over halfway, ending up on its side on the operating table in a ridiculously sultry pose.
"Uh... what are you doing?" the Doctor asked, perplexed. "I’m not that kind of man."
"Get... ting... up..." The communal body spoke in an echoing voice.
"What are you saying now?"
"No-no-nothing."
The Doctor frowned, looking at the entity. He felt that perhaps stuffing so many souls into it at once had been a bit too ambitious.
’But I really do have a lot of spare souls!’
Having no other choice, he found a full-length mirror and placed it in front of the collective body.
Through the eyes of the body, the four players saw their current appearance.
It was a girl who looked to be about sixteen, and would have been pretty if not for the grotesque surgical sutures crisscrossing her body. She looked like she’d been hit by a truck and then crudely stitched back together.
Patting the entity’s shoulder, the Doctor said, "This body was dumped in my backyard. I figured nobody wanted it, so I thought I’d use it for an experiment."
’Nobody wanted it, my ass! You couldn’t call the police?! Even the overbearing CEOs I know would call the police, don’t tell me a scientist wouldn’t!’ Duan Fei tried to make the body facepalm, but after all the inputs were consolidated, the body simply jammed a finger up its nostril and dug out a massive chunk.
After wiping the finger clean on the Doctor’s hair, Duan Fei despaired at this body, which seemed capable of only the most vulgar actions.
’I need to get through this instance ASAP and just go have a grand adventure with Jinghong.’
The Doctor, however, was quite pleased with the entity’s action.
He brought clothes for the entity, placed a student ID card in its pocket, and said, "Your name is supposed to be Junko. Now that you’re resurrected, help me gather some intelligence. I want to test whether you have sufficient intellect, so go and attend school for one day. If, after a full day, no one has discovered that you are no longer you, we’ll call it a success. How about it?"
"What’s in it for us?" Bystander A was the first to ask.
"Take whatever you want," the mad scientist said.
Looking around the laboratory, filled with equipment they couldn’t understand but which all looked incredibly valuable, the four players suddenly thought this gig might be alright after all.
