Chapter 22: Chapter 22: The Miserable City Lord

In >, the first major turning point where a player’s strength could leap forward was when they changed their Profession.

Before this change, every player’s Profession was Adventurer. Leveling up only increased their max health and Physical Limit, offering no other benefits.

After changing Professions, however, players would acquire a new Profession based on their interests, skills, and in-game experiences. From then on, leveling up would grant attribute bonuses and Professional Skills befitting their new role.

Although they knew it was normal for an expert like Cuihua to have a new Profession, there was one thing Duan Fei and Little Fatty just couldn’t wrap their heads around.

’Why a Chef?’

’The only thing you have in common with a Chef is that rolling pin of yours, right?’

Duan Fei posed his question in the group chat, and Cuihua immediately replied, "My dream is to be a Chef. I’m a cook in every game I play."

"Then why are you using a staff?!"

"It’s a family tradition; I can’t just let it go. Besides, my family gave me an ultimatum: they’ll only let me be a cook when I become the Federation Long Spear champion."

Duan Fei narrowed his eyes as he read Cuihua’s reply.

’That had to be the highest entry requirement for becoming a Chef he had ever seen!’

Cuihua, now wielding dual Baguettes, finally made Duan Fei and Little Fatty understand the saying: a Chef who can’t fight isn’t a good player.

The two Baguettes danced in Cuihua’s hands, forming an impenetrable blur. The guards they had just encountered were bludgeoned in the head with a Baguette before they could even react.

Those who managed to block the first blow couldn’t block the second. Even as they were knocked unconscious by the Baguettes, their faces were filled with disbelief, as if they were starting to question their own existence.

With two staffs in hand, Cuihua unleashed his martial arts skills to their fullest. Combined with the Chef’s buffs to food items, his melee power was even more ferocious than a barbarian’s.

Observing Cuihua’s movements, Duan Fei felt that even if he had the same Skills, he could never reach his level.

It was a kind of Talent. Cuihua was an absolute first-rate master when it came to using staffs. Even with the same Skills, he was far stronger than anyone else.

Duan Fei followed behind Cuihua, charging forward. They cleared all obstacles, killing anyone who stood in their way, and reached the City Lord’s location amidst cheerful laughter.

At this moment, the City Lord was completely bewildered.

When he learned that the targets of the Gods had broken into the Moon Tower, his attitude had been one of disdain. He had even wanted to laugh.

In Moon City, there were many who questioned his rule, and many riots broke out daily, but he had never paid them any mind.

A large number of guards were gathered here. They were all experts, each capable of taking on ten men. Their weapons could riddle enemies with holes from a distance, making anyone who dared to challenge him first taste the City Lord’s wrath.

He was the only high-ranking member of his faction, but he controlled the right to an audience with the Gods. He held the finest weapons bestowed by the Gods; he was the supreme leader of Moon City.

But through his monitors, he witnessed a scene that defied his imagination.

A burly woman, looking like a psychotic killer, raised a machine gun and mercilessly annihilated his guards.

A scarred old man holding a cell phone was hacking his corridor monitors as he walked, disabling the tower’s surveillance layer by layer.

A guy wielding two loaves of bread was unstoppable; even the strongest guards were no match for him, falling after just a couple of hits.

Not to mention that Smith with his mysterious Qi Gong from the East—how was it possible to punch the bullets right out of someone’s stomach?

Watching the monitor screens go black one by one, the City Lord finally lost his nerve. He turned and prepared to escape via the elevator.

But just as he stood up, he saw the door get riddled with a frantic spray of bullets. Then Mary, a female nurse who looked like a special forces soldier, kicked the door open, letting three old men walk in behind her.

Staring at the monitors, the City Lord shouted in disbelief, "How is that possible? Weren’t you still on the seventieth floor?"

"I hacked your surveillance feed and set it to a delayed playback. Simple." Little Fatty said, waving his phone. "Your admin password was ’123456’. Could you be a little more creative?"

Staring nervously at the group, the City Lord quickly pulled a pistol from under his desk. But before he could even aim, a Baguette pierced through his right hand, making him scream in pain.

Duan Fei walked forward, forcefully pulled the Baguette out of the City Lord’s hand, and then smashed his Crowbar down on the same hand.

Watching the City Lord’s hand heal rapidly, Duan Fei said to him, "Pay attention. I am threatening you. As you can see, my mysterious technique from the East can make your injuries heal quickly. Do you know what that means?"

The City Lord, trembling all over, stared at Duan Fei, completely unable to answer his question.

Seeing that the man was speechless, Duan Fei continued, "It means I can torture you indefinitely. I can inflict all kinds of pain on you in a short amount of time, then heal you just before you die. There is only one way to escape this near-infinite punishment: tell us where the Gods are."

"But, they..."

Mary stepped forward, shattering several of the City Lord’s teeth with one punch, then gave him a thorough beating.

She threw the City Lord, now beaten to a pulp, in front of Duan Fei. Duan Fei healed him with a tap of his Crowbar and then handed him back to Mary to continue the process.

After three rounds of this, the City Lord finally broke.

He pointed at the luxurious elevator in the room and stammered, "It... it..."

Letting go of the City Lord, Duan Fei walked over to the elevator. He found that inside there was only a single chair. Once someone sat down, a seatbelt would strap them in, and the chair would travel down a tube beneath it directly to the destination.

"This chair can only be used by one person."

"Ye... yes," the City Lord said, trembling as he clutched his shoulder.

"Alright, I’ll go."

Cuihua wanted to step up and go in Duan Fei’s place, but Duan Fei stopped him.

"Don’t worry, I still have an ace up my sleeve. Besides, if I fail, I can still make a plan through our comms. But if we lose you, Cuihua, then we’re really done for."

After weighing the pros and cons, Cuihua nodded, showing he understood.

But just as Duan Fei was about to get in the chair, Mary immediately grabbed his arm and said nervously, "Dad..."

"No need to be so filial; I’ve seen enough of your devotion. Don’t worry, your old man isn’t that easy to kill."

"Mmm... Come back alive."

"I’ll try."

Giving a thumbs-up to Cuihua and Little Fatty, Duan Fei sat in the chair, fastened the seatbelt, and then pressed the button on his right as the City Lord had instructed.

The elevator started to move.

The tunnel beneath the chair opened up, and the chair dropped straight into it, plunging deep into the earth.

Duan Fei passed through a long tunnel, feeling like he had been descending for a very long time.

Finally, the chair began to slow down, eventually coming to a stop in a dark, narrow room.

In the darkness, a light over a doorway turned on, dimly revealing a keypad lock, presumably for entering a password.

A door like this should also be openable from the outside. Still, after staring at the keypad for a moment, Duan Fei simply entered the password ’123456’, and the door clicked open.

The world of the Gods finally appeared before him.
