Chapter 714: Only Hoping She Will Love Me Forever
The man called her.
Sheng Yi instinctively looked up at him. "Hm?"
She saw the way the corners of his eyes lifted, a smile tucked there.
His pursed thin lips parted as he spoke. "You can loosen up a bit. Treat this like your own place, no need to be so restrained."
Sheng Yi spoke honestly. "But... I can’t control being restrained."
"Then just listen to my arrangements, how about that?" Even though he was making a unilateral decision, he still seemed to be asking for her opinion.
Sheng Yi felt embarrassed to keep pretending to decline. Otherwise she’d seem unappreciative. So she obediently hummed in response, indicating she’d go along with his arrangements—after all, she was living in his home.
"I did a quick tidy-up of the master bedroom, and changed the sheets. Also, what daily necessities do you need?" When he had picked up his phone just now, it was to get ready to buy whatever toiletries she might need and have them sent over.
Faced with his meticulous, all-encompassing care, Sheng Yi couldn’t even say what exactly she was feeling right now.
She had only just moved in and already couldn’t help imagining what it’d be like, living together with Dao An, the little days of cohabitation. Ugh. She sighed inwardly, but answered obediently out loud, "I probably don’t need anything. All my stuff is in my suitcase."
"Okay."
He responded.
...
Dao An had already put her suitcase in the master bedroom.
Sheng Yi realized that going back and forth, she only ever said those same two words: thank you.
The master bedroom was very spacious, with a separate walk-in closet. But the first thing she saw upon walking in was the huge floor-to-ceiling window. Sheng Yi walked over to it, and when she realized that standing here let her take in the most dazzling lights of Manhattan, she could only feel awestruck.
"It’s so beautiful..." Faced with such a gorgeous night, her hands instinctively lifted and pressed against the glass in front of her.
Sheng Yi didn’t realize the man had already come up behind her, not until that low, clear voice sounded by her ear. "Do you like it here?"
She heard him, but this time she didn’t jump. She turned her head slightly to look at the tall man standing beside her, not hiding her amazement at the city lights. "I like it a lot. It’s especially beautiful."
The splendor and beauty of Manhattan were impossible to put into words.
Especially after nightfall, when all the lights flickered on across the city.
Just then, she heard the man by her side say, "Yiyi, you still can’t see all of Manhattan from here. The place where you can really take in the full view of Manhattan is the Empire State Building."
Dao An’s capital firm was in the Empire State Building.
But Sheng Yi knew very well that she probably wouldn’t get the chance to stand on the Empire State Building and enjoy the full view of Manhattan at night.
He turned to look at her. When their eyes met, Sheng Yi was the first to look away, dodging the gaze that made her heart race and her mind drift. She heard him ask by her ear, "Do you want to go?"
Sheng Yi’s response was flat. "Go where?"
Dao An: "The Empire State Building."
Sheng Yi’s head snapped up to look at him. There was a gentle smile at his lips as he went on, "There’s a restaurant on the 79th floor of the Empire State Building. Tomorrow night we’ll go over. If we go early, we can see the afterglow of the sunset. It’s beautiful. You’ll probably really like it."
Every word he said landed straight on the tip of Sheng Yi’s heart.
Seeing the gentle smile on his face, Sheng Yi’s eyes stung a little. Afraid he would notice something off, she quickly withdrew her gaze and looked back out the window instead, stumbling a little over her words. "A restaurant in the Empire State Building... I’m sure... I’m sure it’s not easy to get a reservation. Maybe we should forget it, it’ll... take up your work time."
She was turning him down.
She couldn’t let herself indulge.
It wasn’t that she didn’t want to watch the sunset with him, to share the Starlight with him.
It was just that she knew very clearly, if she didn’t refuse now, she’d only sink deeper and deeper. What would she do then?
But his arrangements were so forceful. "I have shares in the restaurant. No need to book."
Sheng Yi: "..."
He added, "My work schedule can be adjusted. And besides, I’m not that busy tomorrow."
Sheng Yi: "..."
"How come you have shares in everything?" After a long moment, she finally squeezed out this sentence.
He said, "As long as there’s potential, it’s only a matter of time before the capitalists set their sights on it."
Sheng Yi thought of how he’d said he’d bought into the hotel, and that it was a recent investment.
So what about the restaurant?
Just as she was thinking that, he somehow seemed to have used a Mind Reading Technique. "This one isn’t a recent investment. It’s been a while. The restaurant’s in the Empire State Building. It’s very good."
Then he turned toward her, reached out, and smoothed a bit of the soft hair at her temple. He leaned in slightly, his voice low and gentle:
"Get some rest early."
"Good night, Yiyi."
With every word he spoke, her heartbeat sped up another notch. As for that last "good night," she honestly felt like she was about to faint.
