Chapter 46: A useless drug
Its danger lies in the fact that it is a magic drug which, although low-grade, has a potent effect on those below Rank D—and can even strongly affect those at Rank D.
Not to mention lowly Rank Fs with no defenses at all, like these—they could only fall prey to its effects.
One of the thugs appeared behind Lucius with a dagger. "We weren’t originally going to go after you, because we thought it would be difficult. Who would’ve thought you’d hand yourself over so easily?" The man laughed and struck Lucius on the back of the neck with the dagger.
But just then, a hand grabbed his wrist and twisted it forward.
The man froze in fear and suddenly let out a scream of pain, while Lucius’s eyes turned red amid the drug-induced haze.
Lucius spat some of the drug in the man’s face and taunted him.
"Hey, kid, have you ever heard of Silver Marrow Elixirs?" Lucius asked.
The man in front of him didn’t answer; with all that drug on his face, he was completely dazed and passed out within seconds, which led to his death.
Lucius leaped from where he was standing and landed right next to the man who had thrown the drug earlier.
"I’m sure you know. Silver Marrow Elixir... the most potent drug for a Player," Lucius laughed and delivered a hard punch to the man’s stomach.
The man doubled over and could no longer breathe. He stared intently at Lucius, confused as to why the drug hadn’t affected him at all.
How was that possible? Wasn’t it an F-Rank? Was the system wrong?
He wasn’t the only one confused. His friends were too. Even Clara couldn’t understand what had happened.
But Lucius simply smiled maliciously. "That legendary drug... I take it daily to numb the pain from my fractured core. What makes you think a low-grade drug would affect me? What you threw at me was just dust that got in my eyes. Nothing but dust."
Lucius pressed the dagger against his neck and then kicked him in the chest.
Then he looked at the other two.
"Low-ranking kidnappers who deal in drugs. How curious. Which faction do you belong to?" Lucius smiled sinisterly and pounced on them.
He tried to extract information from them, but after a while, they were both dead, and he brushed the dust off himself and wiped the blood from his hands.
"Tsk, you stubborn old folks. Not a word."
He turned and walked over to where Clara was, trying to stand up.
"Don’t try so hard," he said, lifting her into his arms like a princess. "That drug is pretty potent."
Just then, the sound of small things falling rang out, and he looked down at the floor.
"Hm? A necklace?"
"The one you gave me..." she said, clenching her fists as she saw that it had been smashed to pieces by those guys earlier. Her eyes welled up with tears.
"Oh." Lucius crouched down and picked it up. "Well, it was just a protective device, but it didn’t activate because of the drug’s peculiar properties."
"Hm? What’s wrong?" Lucius looked at Clara in his arms, who was beginning to sob.
’Is it the drug?’ he wondered. Maybe it had an effect he wasn’t aware of?
"That... was the first sincere gift anyone has ever given me."
Lucius froze for a moment. What was she talking about? The first sincere gift? Seriously?
He’d only given it to her because they were pretty good tools, made in unusual shapes!
If he wore necklaces and earrings, he surely would have kept them for himself. ƒree𝑤ebnσvel.com
However, he couldn’t say that when he saw her sobbing in his arms.
He just sighed.
"Don’t worry, I’ll make you better ones. That was just a temporary gift. Just something temporary," he replied with a smile.
"Temporary?" She looked up at his face, confused.
"Yes. I mean, temporary. They had a limited lifespan. Later I’ll make you some better ones." His smile bore the marks of the previous slaughter, but somehow, in Clara’s eyes, it was a tender, loving smile.
Maybe she was blind.
Lucius had to carry her all the way to her residence, since she was under the influence of the drug.
On the way, they talked about trivial things, chatting and laughing as if nothing had happened.
After dropping her off, Lucius decided to walk to Old Kevin’s inn. Returning to the academy dorms at 3 a.m. wasn’t an option—the guards would have expelled him.
So he simply decided to spend the night there.
His mind was full of questions.
Five people highly skilled in the use of drugs decided to kidnap Clara for having offended a Young Master.
Clara is a Thorne, even if she was expelled from the family. Few families would dare to raise a hand against her.
In fact, who would be stupid enough to order an attack on Alaric Thorne’s favorite sister?
That guy, despite his young age, is already close to reaching Rank A!
Among the entire current generation, only Casius, Lucius’s older brother, ranks above him—and not by much.
So who would be foolish enough to attack that guy’s sister?
’Darius...’ Only him.
Kael Vorren wasn’t that foolish, so he ruled him out. Clara said she hadn’t had any problems with other young masters, so it could only be Darius.
A dangerous gleam flashed in Lucius’s eyes.
’I don’t like it when anyone lays a hand on those who are helping me reach the top, Darius. And this girl is indispensable to my rise. I didn’t want to act so recklessly against you because you’re still the brother of this body, but since you insist on seeking your own destruction, let me start planning your downfall.’
Lucius arrived in front of a building lit up at night, located between the Iron Suburbs and the Main City.
Despite the late hour, many people were coming and going from the building.
Lucius pulled up his hood and went inside. Within minutes, he was inside an office, where a man dressed in black was looking at him after reading the letter Lucius had given him and examining the reward.
"It shall be done," the man replied.
Lucius stood up and left the building without saying a word.
