Chapter 80: Chapter 80: The Elusive Warden_1
Carmilla’s crude speech instantly froze the atmosphere in the room, and Veronica’s face instantly darkened. "Hey!"
"What? You got your eyes on him too?" Carmilla turned to Veronica, her face wearing a wicked smile.
Veronica’s face turned red in an instant, her eyes widened, but she couldn’t utter a word.
Aiden, however, leaned back in his chair with a calm composure, quipping back leisurely, "Who are you looking down on? Do you think I’m so desperate, or do you think you’re gilded?"
He had grown accustomed to this level of teasing, having dealt with it day after day.
Seeing that he was completely immune, Carmilla quickly made a playful surrender gesture with her hands: "Just kidding, just kidding, but..." she suddenly shifted gears, staring earnestly into Aiden’s eyes, "I really do intend to make a deal with you."
As she spoke, Carmilla suddenly stood up, leaned forward, placing her elbows on the metal table, and brought her face close to Aiden’s.
Veronica immediately became alert, placing her hand on the gun at her waist.
Prison guards are very wary of prisoners moving closer without warning, and if Carmilla made any unexpected move toward Aiden, she would not hesitate to draw her gun and shoot.
"You help me deal with that bastard..." Carmilla’s eyes burned into Aiden, "I can be your dog."
"What do you mean?" Aiden remained devoid of concern, with the fully armed Veronica there to keep order, he wasn’t worried about Carmilla suddenly causing trouble.
"It means exactly what I said. I can work for you, I can get my hands dirty on any job you need done, any prisoners you need dealt with in here, I can take care of them, and I’ll take the fall," Carmilla said slowly.
Aiden watched her for a moment, then replied coldly, "Who’d dare to keep a mad dog like you? Get back, sit down properly!"
Carmilla silently and slowly moved back to her seat.
"Are you out of your mind, expecting a prison ward boss to deal with the mob?" Aiden stated emotionlessly, "That’s giving me far too much credit."
"But I truly believe you can do it." Carmilla suddenly grinned, "I’m only interested in the strong, and in this prison, there are many strong ones who interest me. And those strong ones, if they’re not working for you, they’re well tamed by you. I’ve seen what you’re capable of, you are strong enough!"
"Flattery will get you nowhere. I’ll figure out what to do on my own, I don’t need your instruction." Aiden finished speaking and turned to Veronica, "We’ve got all we need to know, nothing left to talk about. This piece of trash doesn’t have a tragic story, take her back to solitary."
"Wait, wait, at least let me finish my cigarette!"
Carmilla reached out to grab the matches on the table, but Aiden was one step ahead and took the box away.
Aiden unceremoniously pocketed the matchbox and stood up with a sweeping gesture: "Take her away!"
Veronica stepped forward without any courtesy, grabbed Carmilla by the collar to lift her, and pulled her out of the door.
"Hey, hey, not so rough," Carmilla protested at the doorway.
"Cut the chatter, hurry up!" Veronica lost her patience, yanked her out the door, and gave her a kick in the butt.
"Damn! I’ll remember this!" Carmilla swore as she shouted, but nonetheless, she obediently walked towards the direction of the isolation cell.
As Veronica escorted Carmilla down the corridor, she looked back to see Aiden heading straight to his office after coming out. freewebnovel.cσ๓
She wasn’t sure whether Aiden would make a move regarding this incident.
If things were truly as foul as they deduced from the clues they had gathered, Carlo Borbo’s actions were despicable enough to make one sick.
Just listening from the side, she felt the urge to shoot the bastard dead on the spot.
But she was also well aware that wiping out gangs was the duty of the Mounted Police, not the Prison Guards.
Aiden wasn’t some avenger or superhero, and there was no need for him to go to such lengths in this incident.
Still, deep down, she couldn’t help but harbor a tiny bit of expectation towards Aiden.
After all, it was Aiden who had performed the miracle of overturning her nearly certain death sentence, and even caused "The Queen of Ants" Meiruki, whom the Heretic Inquisition couldn’t even grasp a shadow of, to fall into her own hands.
If Aiden was preparing to take any action, she wished to be of assistance to him.
So, after sending Carmilla back to solitary confinement, she immediately returned to Aiden’s office and knocked on the door.
...No response.
Veronica tried knocking a few more times, but still silence from inside the door.
Had he gone out?
Veronica was slightly surprised; she had seen Aiden heading in the direction of his office.
At that moment, the core zone’s Warden Flandre, who was passing behind her with freshly made coffee, struck up a conversation, "Veronica, isn’t the Warden in?"
"Yeah, that’s right," answered Veronica, "Have you seen where he went?"
"When I passed by here on my way to the break room, I saw him enter his office, just a minute ago," Flandre pondered, "See if the door is locked."
Veronica tried the door handle: "It’s locked."
"Then he must have stepped out for something," Flandre shrugged, "The Warden has his hands full with affairs all over, and occasionally there are times when no one can find him. He appears and disappears like a ghost; you might want to come back later and check."
"Alright," Veronica nodded and was ready to return to her post.
It was then that she suddenly remembered something.
She had come from this side of the corridor, but the break room was on the other side of the office. Flandre had seen Aiden entering the office when she passed by on her way to the break room, and then she and Flandre had approached the office door from two directions, only to find Aiden already gone from the office without either of them running into him.
Could it be that the Warden had walked past the break room earlier and Flandre hadn’t noticed?
This thought flickered through Veronica’s mind but swiftly passed.
Meanwhile, deep underground in the Warden’s office, in prisoner 4001’s Mithril cell, Aiden was sitting at a table playing a game of UNO with Melifilia.
"So you’re saying, you want to get that guy involved in some trouble?" Melifilia wore an inscrutable smile as she played her card using telekinesis.
"Of course, these past two days I’ve been frazzled by Slyne and Carmilla’s mess, and now someone tells me it’s all because someone was playing tricks. Although it didn’t happen in my prison, they still brought me such an annoying problem; of course, I have to return the favor to that troublemaker," Aiden said emotionlessly, following up with a wild card, "Here, draw four, change to red!"
