Chapter 70: Chapter 70 The Grudge of Killing a Son_1
"It’s Slyne and Camilla, huh... Alright, I see," Aiden nodded calmly after hearing Veronica’s report on the incident.
Veronica was somewhat surprised by Aiden’s reaction, as if it were business as usual, and after thinking for a moment, she tentatively asked, "Sir, do they... often fight?"
"Yes, after all, Slyne was only incarcerated to kill Camilla," Aiden answered casually. "Usually, I have them separated as much as possible. But with the prison’s management regulations, it’s impossible to keep them from coming into contact altogether. This time, it must have been a lapse in the work area surveillance, allowing Slyne to sneak into the cafeteria. Let’s deal with the prisoners first."
He said this and stood up from his seat, heading out of the office, with Veronica following closely behind.
"Sir, that undead creature... Why does Slyne want to kill her?" Veronica curiously asked in the corridor.
"For revenge," Aiden answered without looking back.
"What kind of grudge could they have?" Veronica paused, puzzled.
Slyne was thirty-seven, a textile worker in the old city district before her imprisonment. And Camilla was only twenty, formerly a minor gang leader in the underworld. Veronica found it hard to imagine the two of them having any past encounters.
"It’s a vendetta for her murdered son. Before her imprisonment, Slyne had a son, who was a member of a gang that rivaled the one Camilla belonged to. In a gang fight, he was killed by Camilla, which led to her incarceration. Using the condolence money she got from the gang, Slyne sought out a necromancer through underworld connections, transforming herself into a revenant, intentionally getting imprisoned for dabbling in dark magic, in hopes of finding an opportunity to kill Camilla in prison," Aiden explained.
"To willingly become a revenant for the sake of revenge... to go to such lengths..." Veronica was shocked.
The so-called revenant is essentially a resentful spirit affixed to a corpse, an undead creature created when a person dies and their spirit, driven by unfulfilled wishes from their lifetime—usually for revenge—forcibly returns to their body through the power of necromancy.
In other words, the first step for someone who wants to become an undead creature like that is they must commit suicide.
"When her son was beaten to death, Slyne was already critically ill with not many years left to live, while Camilla’s sentence was eight and a half years. Slyne apparently judged that she wouldn’t last until Camilla’s release and that the only chance she had to kill Camilla was in prison. Yet, ordinary people can’t just get into the core area of Rose Iron Prison even if they’ve committed a crime. So, she gambled everything to transform herself into what she is now, to get into Rose Iron Prison and seek vengeance on Camilla," Aiden said, shaking his head. "Of course, for us, it’s just turned into a big headache."
From the standpoint of prison guards, they certainly couldn’t condone one prisoner killing another in the prison.
By this point, the two had arrived at the infirmary where the prisoners were treated.
Upon entering, they saw the on-duty prison doctor, standing in the infirmary, at a loss as he faced Slyne, who was strapped to the bed with belts.
"Ah, you’ve arrived, Warden." Seeing Aiden, the on-duty prison doctor immediately breathed a sigh of relief. "I can’t deal with this kind of patient; I only know how to treat the living, not the dead," he said.
Slyne’s face was covered with bruises, and several joints looked unnaturally positioned, suggesting they might be broken – all courtesy of Camilla’s handiwork.
But as an undead creature, Slyne’s body was already dead, and she couldn’t feel any pain. Despite her severe injuries, she was still restlessly struggling on the bed, her eyes gleaming with a ghostly blue fire as she glared at Camilla, who sat a short distance away with her arms folded.
The reason she didn’t curse at her nemesis was that the guards had taped her mouth shut.
"We didn’t ask you to treat her, just to provide a place to keep her for the time being," Aiden waved off the prison doctor, then turned to a guard on the scene, "Go to the library and call for Asenna. She knows how to treat the undead."
The guard nodded, then handed over something, "Warden, this is the weapon she used."
Aiden took it and examined it, a silver dinner knife that was the same style as those used in the cafeteria; it was not sharpened and only had rough serration, but it was noticeably shorter and sharper.
It seemed that it must have been Slyne who secretly kept it hidden, and in prison, getting this thing to the extent that it could be used as a weapon would require a significant amount of effort to sharpen.
After he finished speaking, he glanced at Slyne, let out a sigh, and then said to Veronica, "Once Asenna has healed her, lock her up in the solitary confinement cell for seven days." frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
He had no interest in lecturing Slyne, because he knew it would be of no use whatsoever.
Then, he walked up to Camilla.
Camilla was tied to a chair, with several riot squad members standing by her side.
Veronica suddenly felt a sense of déjà vu watching this scene—it was the same treatment she received when she had beaten up other inmates in the past.
Aiden stared at Camilla for a good while, "Camilla, your privilege level is reduced to the lowest, solitary for nine days."
"Hey, wait, why is my time longer than hers?" Camilla glared at Aiden in protest, "That was self-defense on my part!"
"You’re not going to solitary because you defended yourself, but because you attacked the guards. You did attack the duty guards, didn’t you?" Aiden’s face was expressionless.
"So what if I did? I thought she had good moves and wanted a challenge, don’t be so rigid!" Camilla shrugged nonchalantly.
"Attacking an inmate and attacking a guard are not the same thing, putting you in for nine days is already letting you off easy. If you had injured a guard, you’d be getting extra time. What are you trying to prove?" Aiden frowned slightly.
"Prove I’m happy. I’ve been displeased with you guards for a long time now. None of you could take me one-on-one, yet you’re always pointing fingers at me." Camilla said, glancing at Veronica, "As someone who’s truly powerful, it’s too foolish to follow rules and be the government’s dog."
"What ’powerful’? You’re just a little gangster, thinking you’ve reached the heavens because you’ve mixed in the underworld? You think you have some kind of rebellious spirit?" Aiden sneered at Camilla.
Camilla immediately gave Aiden a scornful look, then after silent for a few seconds, she spat on Aiden’s boots and looked up defiantly at him.
Aiden looked down at his boots, wiped them emotionlessly on Camilla’s trouser leg.
"Hey, what are you doing!" Camilla burst out in anger.
"You brought it on yourself," Aiden replied calmly, "Add another day to your solitary."
After stating this, he gestured with a broad sweep of his hand, signaling the riot squad to take her away.
Watching his subordinates take the inmate away, Aiden crossed his arms and let out a sigh, "Really, none of them are worry-free."
