Chapter 52: Chapter 52: Drug Sniffing Dog_1

"Inspect the items brought into the prison?" Standing outside the infirmary, Veronica pointed at herself, slightly stunned.

"Yes, the items brought into the prison that day are inspected in the evening and then handed over to the prisoners at night. It’s almost time now, I hope you can help with the check." Aiden nodded.

Prisoners in jail also receive items from the outside world. Most are brought in by the prisoners’ families, some are purchased by the prisoners themselves, and a small portion comes from donations from the outside world.

By regulation, all items must be checked by the prison guards, and items not meeting the requirements on the prison’s acceptance list will not reach the prisoners’ hands.

The duties assigned to Veronica were in the surveillance post and the riot squad; it was her first time being tasked with this sort of inspection job.

"Understood." Veronica responded and then asked, "Is there a shortage of staff for the inspections?"

"No, all the inspection staff are in place. I just want you to perform an additional check." Aiden said, lowering his voice and leaning close to Veronica’s ear, "Somebody in the core area is spreading drugs, on a large scale. I suspect those checking the items are not clean. I would have checked myself, but I can’t get away right now, so I have to ask you."

"Got it. But Officer, if I may speak freely, I’m just a newcomer here... Do you really trust me this much?"

Veronica had been in the police force for several years and knew a thing or two about such workplace matters.

For leaders in high positions, these kinds of internal checks are generally only entrusted to trusted people, or in other words... cronies.

"In work, I don’t need a person who is simply trustworthy, I need one who is professional enough. I’ve seen how diligently you work. You’ll fulfill your duties earnestly, that’s my judgment." Aiden responded evenly, then passed her a slip of paper, "I’ve signed this, go on!"

A prison is an entity that operates on order and rules. As long as the prison guards complete their duties within the rules, the prison’s management structure can operate smoothly.

In Aiden’s view, subordinates who properly fulfill their duties are considered good. Besides that, whether they respect or dislike him is irrelevant to him.

He doesn’t need to cultivate absolutely trustworthy cronies; it’s sufficient that his subordinates are not a major worry for him.

Veronica didn’t reply, but simply saluted Aiden and turned to head to the assigned post.

When she arrived at the room to inspect the items, she saw a somewhat familiar face.

"The rookie?" Older prison guard Megan turned around with her hands behind her back, "What are you doing here?"

She was directing two younger guards to move several stacks of wrapped-up blankets onto a cart.

"The warden asked me to inspect items brought into the prison." Veronica showed the slip Aiden had signed for her.

"This kind of job is usually not given to newbies." Megan said with an insinuation, "Seems like you’re quite liked by your superiors."

Veronica had heard from other guards that prison jobs come with their own perks, or lack thereof. For example, managing prisoner labor in workshops is considered a benefited position; some guards would manipulate things internally to embezzle a portion of the workshop’s benefits for personal gain.

Moreover, inspecting items brought into prison is also a lucrative job. Sometimes, those at this post can have the opportunity to accept bribes from prisoners or their families.

Therefore, some of the more savvy veteran guards would be particularly eager for these jobs and rarely allow newcomers a chance.

"The warden’s order is for me to do a recheck." Veronica replied bluntly.

"What do you mean by that?" Megan furrowed her brows.

"Exactly what it sounds like, these items are to be inspected by me, once more."

"There’s no need, I’ve essentially checked all of this stuff already." Megan answered languidly, "How about this, we’ll send these checked items out first, and you can slowly go through the remainder."

"The Warden’s order was for me to check everything. All over again!" Veronica emphasized expressionlessly. free𝑤ebnovel.com

"Look at you, just running errands for the Warden. Don’t get carried away yourself. A newbie trying to pull rank on me?" Megan glanced at her dismissively.

"The one pulling rank here is you, isn’t it? The Warden requested a re-check, and now you’re here making decisions?" Veronica argued with reason.

"Alright, alright, no need! We always check once anyway, what’s the point of doing it all over again?" Megan waved her hand impatiently, signaling the other two to send the cart away, completely disregarding this newcomer.

However, just as the two young prison guards were about to push the cart to the door as instructed, Veronica suddenly stepped in front of the door and swung her fist, smashing it hard against the wood. The force was so great that it cracked the thick wooden door.

The loud sound left Megan and the two young prison guards stunned in place.

"I’d like to see who dares to take anything out of this door!" Veronica said sternly, glaring at everyone present.

Her naturally fierce face, when glaring, was quite intimidating, and, coupled with the arm strength that cracked the door, it instantly silenced everyone in the room.

The two young prison guards didn’t move; after all, none of them felt confident that their bodies were stronger than the door.

Megan also felt she was in an awkward position, having not expected the other to be so aggressive.

"Ah, young people, don’t be so hot-tempered. It makes things awkward for everyone..." she softened her tone, trying to smooth things over with slick talk.

Unfortunately, Veronica was not buying it: "You’re the one who’s feeling awkward, not me. Besides, you brought this on yourself."

Megan felt a twitch at the corner of her eye, but she managed to keep her composure: "I mean, look at all this stuff. You’re going to re-check everything? Until when? This is simply unrealistic, right?"

"Don’t worry, I’m definitely more efficient than you guys." Veronica stepped forward, pushed Megan aside, and began to search through the bedding on the cart.

She was well aware that the very reason Aiden had specifically chosen her for this task was fundamental.

Bedding was the easiest place to hide things and needed careful inspection. Guards sometimes even had to open it up to examine the cotton inside before sewing it back together.

But Veronica, when it came to the top few layers of bedding, barely looked before carelessly tossing them aside.

However, when she got to the bottom layer, her movements paused.

She then brought her face closer and sniffed carefully.

"Keep this one, the rest can be taken away," Veronica said solemnly, pointing to the last blanket.

Megan’s face gradually drained of color.

Before she could react, there was a ripping sound—Veronica had already begun tearing open the outer fabric of the blanket.

"Got it." After searching through the cotton in the blanket for a while, Veronica spoke softly. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

Several yellow paper packages appeared among the clumped cotton.

Pureblood Werewolf’s extraordinary sense of smell told Veronica that these packets contained drugs strictly regulated outside of the prison.

"How do you plan to explain this, ma’am?" she asked, her gaze burning into Megan.
