Chapter 439: Chapter 439 Wipe the Oil _1
"Is this a preview? Can you divulge a little bit of information?" Aiden asked.
"Not this time, you have already accumulated enough power. If you were to gain too much of an informational advantage, it would ruin the game experience," Melissa said, waving her finger in refusal. "Don’t worry, this is a good thing, it means I have confidence in you, and I do adjust the game difficulty based on the player’s level."
"I trust your arrangement skills. But did you come to me just to smugly deliver a vague preview?" Aiden frowned. "Why not send a letter? That would add a bit more mystery."
"The preview is just incidental, mainly, I missed you. Heh, my dear warden, whenever you achieved something in the past, you never failed to haggle with me for credit. This time, however, you’re being quite low-key..."
Melissa touched her lips lightly with her finger, her expression seductive. Performing this gesture with her original gaunt and frail body would have been somewhat off, but with Veronica’s body, it indeed emitted a charm that was not present before.
But to Aiden, it felt as if a venomous snake was slowly tightening around his neck—he caught the hidden meaning in Melissa’s words.
The next moment, his thoughts were confirmed. Melissa’s tone suddenly shifted as she looked into his eyes and asked, "It seems you really have caught onto some variable."
Aiden quickly thought about how to respond in his mind—should he lie? Stay silent? Or brush it off?
"Even if that damn book forbids me from reading your mind, I can still sense your desires. You’ve always wanted to break free from me, and now your desire to act in this aspect has grown much stronger than before. It’s only a little, but you see an opportunity, right? The ’Wisdom’ authority can calculate the future, but it must be fed enough information," Melissa’s voice deepened. "I’m here to check, what have you prepared for me?"
After thinking for a while, Aiden said, "Knowing the content eliminates any surprise. If you want to know everything, why seal away your better half? You don’t seem like the type to actively destroy the sense of anticipation." ƒгeewebnovёl.com
Melissa stared at Aiden for quite some time before suddenly bursting into laughter. "That’s right, I don’t want to spoil the surprise. This is just a little probe..."
"A probe?" Aiden was taken aback but then realised what she meant.
"The fact that you’re deliberately trying to persuade me like this shows that you’ve caught a really promising card," Melissa said with a smile.
"Given your level, I shouldn’t need to consider the difficulty I set for you," Aiden replied, playing along with Melissa’s earlier metaphor.
"Good. A chess game with some back and forth is slightly more interesting," Melissa said with a composed smile.
"You should be leaving now, my subordinates and I still have work to do," Aiden said.
"So eager to see me off? How cold and unfeeling," Melissa lifted the teacup and drained the tea in one gulp. "One last game hint for you. With your agents placed, finding the arch-enemy should be no difficult task, but it seems chasing Professor Dodge might be a bit elusive, doesn’t it?"
"I’m all ears," Aiden perked up immediately.
The Royal Secret Police had many informants within the Kingdom of Gistas, but locating Professor Dodge, who possessed the power of obliteration, was not going to be easy, considering he had easily evaded the Empire’s military search.
"Check into Professor Dodge’s family," was the only hint from Melissa.
"Family... Should I investigate in the Empire?" Aiden paused for a moment.
"How could those spies lack for hands in the Empire?" Melissa reminded him. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com
The Empire and the Kingdom of Gistas had been old adversaries for years, so it was inconceivable for the Gistas Royal Secret Police, which had permanent personnel in the autonomous regions, to not have infiltrated the Empire with intelligence agents.
"So they must have already checked," Aiden said confidently.
"Just because they know doesn’t necessarily mean they realize that it’s key," Melissa smiled. "I’ve revealed enough."
"I see," Aiden understood.
It seemed that Professor Dodge’s trip to Gistas was not just to evade pursuit; his lingering in Sunset City was probably for a reason, and Melissa was implying that it had something to do with his family.
Figuring out Dodge’s purpose there would allow for an approximation of his next moves and whom he might seek out—then the Royal Secret Police would have something to do.
"Well, this time I really should be going. Work hard," Melissa finally stood up, waving her hand. "One last thing, you’re quite popular, aren’t you?"
"You needn’t concern yourself with that," Aiden replied, expressionless.
Melissa, having taken over Veronica’s body, must have already read her mind.
Melissa smiled again, her smile fleeting. The next moment, her gaze went blank, and she collapsed forward.
Aiden was slightly startled and hurried forward to support her, just in time to catch Veronica in his arms.
Veronica wasn’t overweight, but she was still tall. With her legs giving no support and her body limp, the weight of it surprised Aiden, who had to wrap his arms around her to keep her from sliding down to the ground.
He needed to help her sit down—just as Aiden thought this, Veronica made an indistinct "hmm" noise.
At this critical moment, the girl had woken up!
Veronica awoke with her consciousness a blank slate, not remembering the time when Melissa’s fragment of consciousness had occupied her body, the domineering power of the possessor overwhelming for her as a mere mortal.
Her last memory was of herself in the hallway, then a break in consciousness, and when she came to again... she was leaning against someone, her face buried in their chest.
The scent that filled her nose reawakened her sense of smell, stopping her struggling—the scent on this person, if she remembered correctly, was—
Veronica’s ability to think disconnected again, feeling her blood rushing to her face; just a slight dip of Aiden’s head at this moment would allow him to see her ears had turned completely red.
What was going on? What had happened? Was I dreaming? Could something like this really happen in a dream? If it’s just a dream... does that mean I can do anything...
In a string of unanswered questions, Veronica found herself caught in a vortex of surprise and embarrassment.
For a moment, Aiden felt the weight against his chest lighten—this was because Veronica, having awakened, was beginning to support her own body. But before he could decide how to speak, he felt an increased pressure against his chest—and it seemed heavier than before.
And this was because Veronica was burying her face into his chest even more tightly.
Aiden was stupefied—was this wolf girl taking the opportunity to cop a feel?
