Chapter 370: 370
Sera Rekhsia stared hard at the judge, with only one thought in her mind.
She must get imprisoned at all costs! That was her only chance of survival now.
Those people were certainly waiting outside the courthouse right now, ready to abduct her without hesitation as soon as she stepped out!
She still felt a bit frightened when recalling the events of the past week.
Everything had happened just as the Bounty Hunter, with whom she had parted ways, had predicted.
She had been "hiding out" in that tavern for days, not daring to show her face, relying on the tavern owner to carry out all her transactions and send her letters.
She had sent out letters for help, waiting for a reply as if each day were a year. But instead of a reply, the pursuers arrived sooner. One day, as she was about to send a letter, she saw a person asking the owner about her whereabouts using a portrait.
At that moment, she felt her back soaked in cold sweat.
Before the other person could turn their gaze toward her, she quickly retreated to her room, took the rope and her pack that she had prepared earlier, and climbed down from the second-floor window into the deserted alley next to the tavern before fleeing swiftly like a rat through the sewer.
She knew how high the bounty on her head was, and whether this "reliable" tavern owner mentioned by the Bounty Hunters could truly be trusted to that extent, she dared not gamble with her life.
When she reached the main street, it felt as though every person was watching her from the corner of their eyes, with passersby whispering amongst themselves as if plotting to trap her in a dead end.
Somehow, she managed to calm herself down, pulled her hat low, and kept her head down as she walked, eager to get as far away from that tavern as possible.
After wandering aimlessly yet anxiously for a while, she finally decided to try her luck at the train station.
That decision almost cost her life.
The poor disguise hastily assembled from a random clothing store could never fool the eyes of the secret police. At the station, someone soon spotted her and briskly made their way through the crowd toward her.
And this time, it wasn’t just her imagination.
Upon realizing her situation, she had to leave the station, and those people quickly caught up with her.
Taking into account the manpower they had deployed to capture her, at that moment, Sera had almost resigned herself to the vision of being surrounded on a street corner, then being tied up and thrown onto a carriage that "just happened" to draw near.
As a chill ran down her spine, what came to mind first wasn’t the contingency plan given by the Bounty Hunter, but the face of a man she had once known well; however, she then erased that man from her mind.
That man was no longer her knight in shining armor. On the contrary, he was now tirelessly hunting her down as the leader of those secret police.
When it came to personal promises versus family honor, he ultimately chose the latter.
What’s the use in reminiscing about someone who has already betrayed her?
Now, if she wanted to survive, she could only rely on her own strength!
It wasn’t until she saw the two local police officers at the corner that she glimpsed a bit of hope.
Her first instinct had actually been to seek help from the police, to have them escort her to the train station, to leave this city filled with spies and eyes.
But then she realized that path was completely unviable; if just one of them managed to get on the train unnoticed, she would be dead for sure. Even though those people would likely avoid a direct conflict with the local police to complete their mission with discretion, the local police would not protect her indefinitely. ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm
Even if she’s incredibly lucky and evades capture in this city... what about the next city?
The endless journey of escape had, at this point, only her and the pursuers intent on bringing about her death traveling the same path.
In the end, it was the thought of survival that pushed her, driving the isolated Sera to throw herself into an emergency plan provided by the Bounty Hunters that could only be described as extremely foolish.
Even if it meant imprisonment, she had to survive this hopeless situation.
When she spoke these words in court, the judge, jury, defense attorney, prosecutor, and even her court bailiff were plunged into dead silence.
All eyes were fixed on her while she fearlessly stared back at the judge. ƒгeewёbnovel.com
After a long silence, the judge simply ignored her and continued reading the unfinished sentence, "Based on the evidence provided by the prosecution, the defendant’s crime is confirmed, but in light of the minor nature of the offence and the defendant’s voluntary confession, a lighter punishment will be given..."
"Hey!" Sera gasped loudly on the spot.
"Can you please not freak out now!" the lawyer pleaded in a low voice.
But Sera paid him no mind; this verdict was not an opportunity for reform in her eyes, but a one-way ticket to death.
At that moment, she felt as if the cold barrel of a gun was already pressed against the back of her head.
It seemed that without taking some substantive action, the judge was not going to reverse the sentence.
With resolve, before anyone else could react, she bent over to remove her shoes with her handcuffed hands and then hurled them with all her might at the judge.
The judge ducked reflexively, and the shoe whizzed past the top of his head.
The defense attorney’s mouth was wide enough at that point to fit an apple.
"Defendant! This is your last warning—" the judge was completely furious.
"Warn me about what?" By this time, Sera was already removing her second shoe, "You think you’re safe just because you dodged it? Don’t forget I have two shoes!"
Finally, the female bailiff reacted, hurriedly grabbing Sera’s shoulders and hands to forcefully restrain her.
"Damn it! Let go! I must teach this ungrateful judge a lesson!" Sera struggled violently.
The judge’s temple twitched several times, but eventually, he managed to suppress his anger and said in an even tone, "The court was initially inclined to grant you probation because you are a first offender, hoping that you would reform. But your failure to appreciate this leniency, repeatedly disrupting the court order and even attacking the judge, has led to the revocation of the probation. I hereby sentence you to three years of incarceration, and for disturbing the court order, an additional judicial detention of ten days."
The defense attorney covered his face in despair; at that moment, he truly wished he could take off his own shoes and fling them at the defendant’s face.
However, Sera, on the other hand, felt a huge sense of relief.
Imprisonment... imprisonment was good, there was no longer a need to worry about being sent out to her death...
First, she needed to buy time and find a way out... perhaps find a way to seek help from the outside.
At the very least, the constant fear and anxiety of the escape had come to a close for now.
"Alright, okay." Sera wore a relieved smile on her face, nodding repeatedly to the bailiff by her side as she was being taken away, and looking towards the jury and judge, "Thank you... thank you so much!"
The entire jury and the judge looked at each other, bewildered.
