Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Making a Fool of Oneself
A fluffy white Samoyed puppy snarled, charging at Old Hag Crawford.
"She’s poisonous." A light, airy voice drifted over.
Hearing Renee Jennings’s voice, Bella slammed on the brakes, turned, and sprinted back.
"Poisonous! So scary!"
Rhea Dempsey turned her head to look, asking in surprise, "Why did you come down?"
"Waiting for a friend," Renee Jennings replied.
In truth, she had heard a puppy crying for help from upstairs.
She hadn’t expected to find Old Hag Crawford, that old hag, bullying a puppy.
The little black dog recognized Renee Jennings. It ran out from under the stone table to her side, looking pitiful. "Renee, it’s me, Boo!"
"Boo?" Renee Jennings reached out and stroked its head, asking in confusion, "What are you doing here?"
Boo was a stray dog from near Prosperity Gardens.
"Renee, Goldie is missing!" Boo said urgently. "I’ve been looking for her for days and can’t find her. Can you help me?"
Goldie, like Boo, was a stray mutt with mottled yellow and white fur.
Goldie was Boo’s wife.
Renee Jennings’s slender brows furrowed. "I’ll see what I can do, but I can’t guarantee I’ll find her."
"Okay..." Boo lowered his head, dejected.
Renee Jennings crouched in front of Boo and asked with concern, "Did she hurt you when she kicked you?"
Boo raised his head, met Renee Jennings’s gentle gaze, and nodded honestly. "It hurts."
But the pain was nothing, really. As a stray dog, he was beaten and cursed at nearly every day.
Worried Renee Jennings would misunderstand, Boo quickly explained, "Renee, I didn’t steal any food! I heard her on the phone. Her son’s rich girlfriend got angry and isn’t coming to her house or giving her a gold bracelet, so she was upset. When she saw me, she started hitting me."
"I see." Renee Jennings stood up, her gaze falling on Old Hag Crawford’s huge, basin-like face.
Noticing her gaze, Old Hag Crawford started railing, "What are you looking at? Always bringing stray dogs into the neighborhood. Next time it steals my stuff, I’m holding your family responsible!"
Rhea Dempsey was so angry she gritted her teeth. "Bullshit!"
Renee Jennings sneered. "Don’t worry. Even a dog wouldn’t want your garbage, just like no rich woman would want that good-for-nothing son of yours."
Her words hit Old Hag Crawford right where it hurt.
The plan had been for her son to bring his rich girlfriend home, who would buy her bird’s nest soup, shark fin soup, and a gold bracelet.
She had waited for two days, only for her son to suddenly call and say that he and his girlfriend had argued, and she wasn’t coming tomorrow.
She had immediately asked about her big golden bracelet.
Her son said that was off the table too.
The more Old Hag Crawford thought about it, the angrier she got, so she took it out on Boo.
"You’re talking nonsense!" Seeing other neighbors around, Old Hag Crawford, desperate to save face, yelled, "Plenty of rich women are into my son! One of them even wanted to give me a big golden bracelet, but I turned it down."
"I’m sure it’s because she wouldn’t give it to you," Rhea Dempsey mocked. "You’re so greedy, how could you possibly turn it down?"
Just then, a neighbor suddenly shouted, "Isn’t that Ms. Crawford’s son?"
Everyone looked over and saw Old Hag Crawford’s son, Xander Warren, at the community entrance.
"Is the girl next to Xander his girlfriend? She’s so beautiful."
"Holy crap, is that a Ferrari? What a luxury car!"
"So that’s Xander’s rich girlfriend. Ms. Crawford is so lucky!"
When Old Hag Crawford saw her son standing by the luxury car talking to the beautiful woman, a look of delighted surprise spread across her large, sagging face. She eagerly agreed, "Yes, yes, yes, that woman is my son’s girlfriend!"
’Well, I’ll be! He told me she wasn’t coming tomorrow, but it turns out she was coming right now instead!’
Old Hag Crawford ran over, her corpulent body swaying. She bypassed her son and reached for the gift boxes in Sylvia Brooks’s hands. "Let me, let me!"
Xander Warren was surprised to see his mother’s actions.
’So this woman is a guest at our house?’
So he also enthusiastically helped carry the gifts.
Sylvia Brooks froze for a few seconds. Thinking they were Renee Jennings’s family, she didn’t refuse.
The chauffeur and bodyguard also took several more gift boxes out of the trunk.
Seeing this, Old Hag Crawford’s face was wreathed in smiles, her eyes nearly squeezed shut. "Oh, you shouldn’t have! You came all this way, why bring so many things!"
’Oh my god, there’s even a Hermès box!’
Xander Warren was also stunned. ’Does our family have such wealthy relatives? How come I never knew?’
Old Hag Crawford carried the gift boxes, walking with her head held high, puffed up with pride under the envious gazes of the neighbors.
She said proudly, "Well, Rhea Dempsey, look at this. She brought them after all, didn’t she?"
Rhea Dempsey: "..."
She looked at Sylvia Brooks, her eyes filled with deep sympathy.
’What an unlucky girl.’
Old Hag Crawford didn’t go upstairs immediately, instead showing off the gifts in her hands to the neighbors.
Sylvia Brooks watched her, shocked. ’I can’t believe Renee Jennings’s family acts like this...’
Seeing Renee Jennings, she called out a greeting, "Miss Jennings, Happy New Year."
Old Hag Crawford looked completely surprised. ’She actually knows that damn girl from the Jennings family?’
A smile touched Renee Jennings’s lips. "Miss Brooks, Happy New Year."
Old Hag Crawford’s face hardened. She unhappily tugged on Sylvia Brooks. "Let’s go home."
Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow. "If you’re going home, then go home. Let go of my guest and my gifts."
Old Hag Crawford sneered, "What do you mean, *your* guest? This is *my* guest!"
Sylvia Brooks paused for a few seconds, realizing something was wrong. "Aren’t you all family?"
"Family? What a jinx!" Old Hag Crawford spat several times. "It’s bad enough being neighbors with people like them!"
Renee Jennings made the introduction. "Miss Brooks, this is my mother, Ms. Dempsey."
"Hello, Ms. Dempsey." Sylvia Brooks extended a hand toward Rhea Dempsey. "I’m Sylvia Brooks."
Seeing this, Old Hag Crawford quickly tried to stop her. "Why are you greeting her? Hurry up and come upstairs with me!"
Sylvia Brooks frowned and shook off her hand. "Excuse me, but please put down the gifts I brought for Miss Jennings."
’She had just been wondering. Renee Jennings was such a principled person, how could her family be so vulgar?’
Old Hag Crawford’s eyes widened in disbelief. "What did you say? Who were the gifts for?"
Sylvia Brooks said coldly, "They’re gifts for Miss Jennings. Please put them down."
Rhea Dempsey beamed, delighted. "Old Hag Crawford, what were you just telling everyone? Your son’s girlfriend? My apologies, but Sylvia is my Renee’s good friend."
A flicker of surprise crossed Sylvia Brooks’s mind.
’Did Renee Jennings introduce me to her family as her good friend?’
She pressed her lips together, so happy she wanted to laugh.
Old Hag Crawford swayed slightly, feeling as if she’d been struck by lightning.
She turned her head stiffly to glare at her son, asking through gritted teeth, "Xander, isn’t this your girlfriend?" fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm
Xander Warren frowned, completely bewildered. "Mom, isn’t this one of our relatives?"
"So after all this time, Ms. Crawford and her son had it wrong!"
"That’s hilarious! HAHAHAHA!"
Sylvia Brooks signaled for her bodyguards to retrieve the gift boxes from Old Hag Crawford and her son.
