Chapter 36: Chapter 36: Assisting in Cracking the Case

After a few seconds of thought, Renee Jennings set off after the two thieves.

To her surprise, they had come on a motorcycle. With no taxis in sight, Renee couldn’t catch up and only had time to snap a picture of the license plate.

Ruby volunteered eagerly, "Renee, I’ll go after them!"

Watching him fly off, Inky said with resignation, "Renee, he’s sure to forget where they went. I’d better go instead."

Renee nodded, her face full of gratitude. "Thank you."

"No need to thank me. We’re friends," Inky said before flying off.

Blueberry stood by her feet, saying gloomily, "Renee, why are you such a flirt?"

Renee: "..."

’Me, a flirt?’

’A scumbag like Evan Shepherd is the real flirt.’

Renee retorted, "Comrade Blueberry, I am not being a flirt."

Blueberry: "Then what is it?"

Renee: "It’s called being popular... No, it’s called having a way with animals. Weren’t you just saying that?"

Blueberry licked its paws and fell silent.

When the police arrived, they only saw Renee by herself.

"Miss Jennings, do you know the whereabouts of the stolen gold and gemstone necklace?" The one speaking was a bald policeman.

Renee nodded. "The thieves moved the stolen goods just a few minutes ago."

"Moved them?" The bald man frowned, clearly displeased. "Isn’t that a bit too coincidental? Miss Jennings, filing a false report and wasting police resources is a punishable offense."

Renee’s expression didn’t change, her tone calm. "It is that coincidental."

"You..." Anger flared on the bald man’s face.

"What’s wrong?" A familiar figure stepped out of the police car.

Renee tilted her head to look. The man wore a uniform, his freshly cut buzz cut neat and sharp.

She pressed her lips together, not saying a word.

Henry Stark took the initiative to greet her. "Miss Jennings, we meet again."

"Captain Stark, you know her?" The bald man was a little surprised.

Henry Stark said lightly, "This is Miss Jennings, a criminal investigation consultant hired by our bureau. She assisted in cracking the burial case at Blue Bay Park."

This case hadn’t been assigned to him, but when he overheard that the person who called it in was a woman with the surname Jennings, he felt an inexplicable urge to come over.

He hadn’t expected it to actually be her.

The bald man looked at Renee, a flash of shock in his eyes. He couldn’t help but re-evaluate the young, beautiful girl before him.

’So young. Could she really be any good?’

Although he was still skeptical, he changed his attitude, a small smile appearing on his face. "Miss Jennings, so young and accomplished!"

Renee: "Just lucky."

"Miss Jennings, how did you know they moved the stolen goods?" the bald man asked. "And how were you certain they were the suspects?"

Renee’s tone was emotionless. "I saw them. I only called the police after confirming they had the stolen goods."

Hearing this, the bald man’s expression immediately became grave. "What a coincidence. To think they got away!"

Renee provided the license plate number she had photographed earlier.

The bald man immediately contacted his colleagues to run a real-time trace on the motorcycle.

But soon, a message came back from a colleague: "Captain Archer, the plate is a fake. It’s not in the system." fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

The bald man kicked the air and couldn’t help but curse, "Shit!"

Even Renee hadn’t expected the license plate to be fake.

’The five hundred thousand reward... is it about to fly away?’

The bald man calmed down and told Renee to come to the station to give a statement, and then they would figure out how to pursue the suspects.

Several of them got into the police car. Just as Renee, holding Blueberry, was about to get in, Ruby and Little Sparrow flew back.

"Renee, the thieves switched vehicles partway through!"

Renee raised an eyebrow, a smile appearing on her cool face. "What kind of vehicle did they switch to?"

Little Sparrow: "A van!"

Henry Stark, sitting in the front passenger seat, noticed Renee talking to the birds. His eyes narrowed slightly, and he asked in a low voice, "Miss Jennings, have you found something new?"

Renee turned to look into the man’s deep eyes and nodded. "Yes. They switched to a van. I know where it is."

When the bald man heard this, he found it incredible. "How does Miss Jennings know that?"

Renee: "I guessed."

The bald man: "..."

’Isn’t this just messing around? This isn’t a game. What’s there to guess?’

Henry Stark spoke up at the right moment. "Captain Archer, I suggest you listen to Miss Jennings. Whether she’s guessing or has it all figured out, if you listen to her, we can solve this case."

The bald man thought Henry Stark must have been bewitched by her beauty. "Captain Stark, you can’t just let yourself be led by the nose because Miss Jennings is pretty!"

Henry Stark: "..."

Renee: "..."

’You may be questioning me, but since you called me pretty, I’ll forgive you.’

Henry Stark said seriously, "Captain Archer, Miss Jennings is indeed beautiful, but you can’t deny her excellence just because of her outstanding appearance."

Renee was quite surprised.

’I didn’t expect Captain Stark to think so highly of me.’

The bald man figured that if Henry Stark was defending Renee like this, he was probably interested in the girl.

’He’s already thirty, so I’ll give him this one.’

"Fine, we’ll listen to Captain Stark."

Henry Stark raised an eyebrow. "You’re not listening to me. You’re listening to Miss Jennings."

The bald man: "..."

’He’s so smitten he can’t think straight. I can’t even watch.’

This time, Renee sat in the front passenger seat, directing the driver according to the birds’ prompts.

The police car stopped on a street. The moment Renee got out, a magpie flew up to her.

"Are you Renee?"

Renee: "I am."

The little magpie: "Inky told me to wait for you here."

"Thank you, little magpie." Renee took some grains from her pocket as a thank-you gift.

Seeing her suddenly start feeding a bird, the bald man grew even more dissatisfied.

’This girl is too much! What a complete waste of police resources!’

The little magpie chirped happily, "This is delicious! I’ll lead the way for you right now, Renee!"

Following behind Renee as she made turn after turn, winding through streets and alleys, the bald man’s expression grew uglier and uglier.

’This is ridiculous!’

’Captain Stark has terrible taste to be interested in someone like this!’

"Renee, you’re here!" Inky, who was perched by a small window, saw Renee and flapped its wings, flying toward her. "The thieves are inside this house."

"Well done." Renee took out more grains to feed them. "You’ve worked hard, my little darlings."

Seeing this, the bald man felt his temples throb and a surge of anger well up in his chest.

"Enough!" He could no longer stand it and snapped, "We don’t have time to fool around with you!"

’Even if it means offending Captain Stark, I don’t care anymore!’

Hearing this, Renee furrowed her delicate brows and explained softly, "Captain Archer, I’m not fooling around. They’re in here."

The building in front of them was a mahjong parlor. The sign read, "Win Every Bet."

The bald man frowned tightly, his gaze falling on the mahjong parlor’s entrance. His tone was full of suspicion. "Are you sure?"

"I’m one hundred percent sure," Renee said with conviction.

The bald man hesitated for a moment, then raised his hand to knock on the door. "Anyone home?"

"We’re not open today," a voice came from inside.

The bald man kept knocking.

"What the hell do you want!?" The voice grew closer, and the door opened from the inside. "I told you, we’re not open! Get lost..."

Seeing who was outside, the stout man was scared speechless. "Off-Officer?"

The bald man: "You’ve been reported for theft!"

The stout man’s voice trembled. "You’ve got the wrong guys!"
