Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Can You Save My Master?

Seeing this, Sharon Dawson gloated, "Oh, is Luca going to bite her?"

The next instant, Luca kicked off powerfully with his hind legs and leaped menacingly toward Renee Jennings.

"Luca, no biting!" Zephyr Lockwood’s heart leaped into his throat.

"AAAHH, you understand me!" Luca rushed up to Renee Jennings, wagging his tail, his eyes sparkling. "You can understand what I’m saying, right?"

"Of course," Renee Jennings said with a smile, looking down at him. "Tell me what’s wrong."

Luca didn’t bite Renee Jennings, so Zephyr Lockwood breathed a sigh of relief. Sharon Dawson and Old Hag Crawford, however, looked disappointed.

Luca said excitedly, "Doctor, I want to see Luna! Luna hasn’t come to see me in so long. Did she get sick and disappear? I’m really, really worried about her!"

As he spoke, the strong, sturdy Alaskan Malamute even started to cry with a whimper.

Renee Jennings rubbed the dog’s head to comfort him before turning to Zephyr Lockwood. "Mr. Lockwood, who is Luna?"

"She’s my daughter," said Zephyr Lockwood.

Renee Jennings nodded and asked Luca, "Are you sad and miserable because you can’t see Luna?"

Luca nodded his head vigorously and asked sadly, "Where in the world did Luna go? Is she sick again?"

Seeing Luca nod, Zephyr Lockwood and his father were stunned.

’Who would have thought a dog could be just like a person, getting depressed when they can’t see someone they miss?’

"Let me ask for you." Renee Jennings looked at Zephyr Lockwood again. "Where did Luna go? Luca’s worried that she hasn’t visited in so long because she’s sick."

Zephyr Lockwood froze for a few seconds before explaining, "Luna has depression. She’s currently abroad for treatment."

Renee Jennings looked down at Luca’s anxious eyes, feeling a wave of emotion. She was deeply touched by his loyal and silent devotion.

"Quick, start a video call with Luna," Old Mr. Lockwood said excitedly.

It was morning where Luna was. When she heard that Luca had lost his appetite and was listless from worrying about her, she broke down in tears, overwhelmed with sadness from thousands of miles away.

"Luca, I’m so sorry! It’s all my fault!"

Watching the phone, Luca said anxiously, "Luna, don’t cry! You have to be happy! I was so worried you’d gotten sick and disappeared. Now that I see you’re okay, I feel so much better!"

As Renee Jennings translated Luca’s words, Zephyr Lockwood and Old Mr. Lockwood couldn’t help but get teary-eyed.

Luna was sobbing uncontrollably.

Luca grew frantic. "Luna, please don’t cry! If you keep crying, I’m going to start crying too!"

"Okay, okay, I’ll stop crying." Luna quickly wiped away her tears. "Luca, I’m going to book a flight to come see you right now. You have to promise to eat well, okay?" freeweɓnøvel.com

A brilliant grin instantly spread across Luca’s face. "I’ll be a good boy and eat while I wait for Luna to come back!"

The moment the video ended, Luca went straight for his food. He was full of energy and ate with gusto, without a trace of his earlier sadness.

He was like a completely different dog from moments before.

Renee Jennings watched Luca happily gobbling down his food, a gentle smile gracing her features.

’So this is how cute dogs can be.’

The worried expression on Old Mr. Lockwood’s face vanished, replaced by a grin as he watched Luca eat.

"Miss Jennings," Zephyr Lockwood said, walking up to Renee Jennings with a grateful expression. "Thank you!"

"You’re welcome, Mr. Lockwood," Renee Jennings said with a wave of her hand.

The trio who had been so eager to see her fail were dumbfounded.

"How is that possible..." Evan Shepherd muttered under his breath.

"She can actually understand it?" Sharon Dawson was still in disbelief.

"I’ve seen a ghost!" Old Hag Crawford turned to sneak away.

"Aunt Crawford," Renee Jennings called out, stopping her.

Old Hag Crawford’s back went rigid. She was frozen, not knowing whether to keep walking or answer.

Renee Jennings said with a smile, "Weren’t you going to get on your knees and let me kick you around like a ball? I’ve never kicked a ball quite like you before."

Old Hag Crawford was speechless.

Evan Shepherd frantically chanted in his head, ’They can’t see me, they can’t see me...’

"And you two." Renee Jennings shot a look at Sharon Dawson and Evan Shepherd. "One of you owes me a consultation fee, and the other has to get on his knees and call me ’Grandpa’."

Sharon Dawson, however, was unfazed. She scoffed, "How much is the consultation fee? I’ll pay it!"

Renee Jennings slowly enunciated two words: "A hundred grand."

"What?" Sharon Dawson was aghast. "Are you robbing me? How can translating a few sentences of dog-speak cost that much?!"

Renee Jennings raised an eyebrow. "Just a hundred thousand. Is that a lot? I guess you’re not that rich after all."

Back in school, Sharon Dawson had cultivated the image of a rich, beautiful heiress.

Her expression soured. "A hundred thousand is nothing. I just don’t think it’s worth that much."

Renee Jennings said coolly, "Not worth it? Fine. You translate a couple of lines, and I’ll give you a million."

"You..." Sharon Dawson gritted her teeth and pulled out her phone. "It’s only a hundred thousand. Fine, I’ll send it."

Renee Jennings pulled up her payment QR code.

Once the money was transferred, she turned to Old Hag Crawford and Evan Shepherd. "Now it’s your turn to make good on your promises."

"What’s it got to do with me? I don’t know nothin’!" Old Hag Crawford cursed as she scurried away.

Old Hag Crawford could run off, but Evan Shepherd couldn’t.

After all, Sharon Dawson and her uncle were still there.

"Renee, I was just kidding," Evan Shepherd said with a hollow laugh. "You didn’t actually take that seriously, did you?"

Renee Jennings sneered. "Wimp."

"You..."

"A stingy, cowardly scumbag," Renee Jennings said with utter disgust. She gave Sharon Dawson a meaningful glance and shook her head.

"What’s that supposed to mean?" Sharon Dawson snapped, irritated.

Evan Shepherd played the victim. "Shanna, she’s just bad-mouthing me because she can’t have me!"

Renee Jennings was speechless.

She couldn’t be bothered with such human trash, so she said her goodbyes to Zephyr Lockwood, his father, and Luca, then left.

On the far west side of Blue Bay Park, there was a lake where egrets sometimes foraged leisurely by the water. It was also a great spot to watch the sunset, so it was a popular place for people to take pictures and check in on social media.

Renee Jennings decided to go see the egrets.

Ever since she’d gained the ability to understand animals, she had become fascinated by them.

As she walked, a fluffy black ball suddenly darted out and wrapped itself around her ankles.

Renee Jennings jumped in surprise. Looking down, she saw it was a tuxedo cat.

"Miss!" the tuxedo cat meowed at her. "Miss! Can you understand what cats are saying?"

The tuxedo cat had witnessed the entire exchange between Renee Jennings and Luca and had followed her here.

Renee Jennings crouched down, looked into its big, round eyes, and smiled. "I can. Do you need my help with something?"

"That’s great! That’s wonderful!" the tuxedo cat asked. "Miss, can you do me a favor?"

"What kind of favor?" Renee Jennings asked, puzzled.

The tuxedo cat said, "Can you save my owner?"

Renee Jennings frowned. "What’s wrong with your owner?"

The tuxedo cat said sadly, "My owner is buried in the dirt! No matter how much I claw at it, I can’t get them out! Can you please help me rescue my owner?"

"In the dirt?" Renee Jennings asked, confused. "Is your owner human?"

The tuxedo cat replied, "A human!"

Renee Jennings’s expression grew solemn. "Where are they buried?"

The tuxedo cat said, "Right here in this park! I’ll take you!"

After crossing a winding stone path, Renee Jennings followed the tuxedo cat to a remote corner on the far east side of the park—a blind spot for the security cameras.

"Right here!" The tuxedo cat ran to the base of a large tree and began pawing furiously at the soil. "Someone buried my owner in here!"

As the tuxedo cat dug, Renee Jennings could just make out the tip of a human finger poking through the dirt where it was clawing.

"Get away from there!" an angry voice barked from behind her.
