Chapter 278: Missed Him [1]

Humans had always been weaker than the other races from their birth.

This weakness had often resulted in the subjugation of humans all across the world, until... the humans began to group together.

Soon the groups evolved into factions, kingdoms, and then turned into the mighty empires that they were at present.

Using the advantage of their huge population, the humans had been able to push all the races who had invaded them out of their territories, thereby establishing themselves as one of the major and dominant races in the world.

The Veltran Empire too had been through this journey, and now it stood as one of the main pillars of the human race on Jutan.

The empire had many great noble houses that supported its foundation right from the very beginning.

These noble houses, along with the Veltran royal family, were now a nightmare for anyone who dared to attack their lands.

Alicia had been born in one such house—

House Frost.

Being a Frost from birth meant that she had always enjoyed the privileges that came with the title, as well as the hardships that people like her had to suffer, no matter which part of the world they resided in.

One such hardship was the battle for the throne.

The battle to sit on a chair that would make a given individual the ruler of the House, and the supreme leader of all its forces.

No matter which empire, duchy, or even a minor noble house... everyone had experienced the bloodshed that always accompanied the battle for the rightful place on the throne of the given territory.

The ones that called themselves a family, the very ones that were born under the same roof, would go on to kill each other in cold blood.

There was mercy for none.

If you wanted to win, you had to kill, you had to devour, and you had to grow.

That was the harsh reality that the world had always abided by.

But, it wasn’t like the people at the top had always remained ignorant of it. Many tried to change the nature of these battles in order to reduce the bloodshed, but ultimately... all of them failed spectacularly.

Living beings were greedy by nature, and none liked to bow before the other, especially when they thought themselves equals.

Jealousy was something that had corrupted the minds of even the greatest of all men.

None were spared from its reach, as jealousy could never be stopped.

If one was equal to another, it would result in jealousy for sure.

Even if one was greater than the other, the difference had to be big enough for the jealousy to be curtailed in the minds of those at the bottom.

Still... that had never been enough to stop men from envying others. Greed had always been there, and so had violence—

Violence that had torn families apart.

Children killed their fathers, resulting in the house dividing into factions and resulting in a civil war that spared no soul.

Still, over time, many measures had been put in place to curtail the violence among the members of the family.

One such measure was designating the heir to the house while the current ruler was still alive.

That reduced the conflicts to a good extent, but even this measure wasn’t effective enough, as deciding an heir was a task that somehow created division among the siblings.

That was why House Frost had a rule that only the males of the house could be designated as the heirs.

The Frost bloodline had always produced strong children, resulting in the females having equal or even greater talent than the male children.

That was why they had to be removed from the competition, to maintain love and peace among the family.

Still... there were occasional conflicts between the brothers, as the eldest heir had not always been the best.

Still, in the end, House Frost had always been able to somehow maintain the frail balance of peace, and advance along with time.

But the peace had finally been broken in the generation led under the leadership of Castor Frost... Alicia’s father.

Alicia’s eldest brother, Kael, had always been her favourite among all of her siblings.

No matter what problem Alicia got herself into, Kael would always be there to support her.

He would hug her, then pat her, and console her in a way that no one else could have ever done.

The years of her childhood had always been the best memories that Alicia ever had, but as they say... happiness never lasts forever.

At an early age, Kael had been designated as the heir to House Frost.

The expectations placed on him had always been immense, but looking at Kael, Alicia had never felt the burdens weighing on him.

For her... Kael was the best brother, someone who could solve everything with just a flick of his finger, like—

So Alicia had always known that Kael would easily be able to perform his role as the future ruler of their house.

Kevin too always looked upon Kael as someone he had to learn from.

Their elder sister Victoria was a genius too, but even she always listened to what Kael had to say.

Though being older than him by two years, she kept lecturing Kael from time to time... something that he had always listened to without resisting in the slightest.

At least that was how the world was for Alicia in her childhood.

A happy family with no conflicts in them whatsoever.

Alicia always had a problem while sleeping, as she would suffer from nightmares every now and then.

But upon waking up... the reality before her was so good that she always felt like she was dreaming.

But that happy dream didn’t last long, as Father had begun to scold her brother.

Alicia always hated it when Father said something bad to her brother, but her elder sister Victoria would always tell her to stay quiet and not say anything in between.
