Chapter 282: Madness
Two hours had passed after Leon woke up.
The daylight hit the inside of the cave. Anise was injecting a yellowish fluid into Leon’s arm.
Irene had gone outside to catch some fish for breakfast.
She had not said anything after she had cried her eyes out clinging onto Leon.
According to her, Leon was playing with something even he himself had no idea about.
To her, Leon was just trying to act tough. Even though deep down it was the complete opposite.
"Aaah–!" Leon hissed as the needle went in.
"Doctor, what are these for?"
"Hm?" Anise tilted her head. "These are just antibiotics. I have been giving you shots of these every single day. If I have to say, it is because of these that your body still looks healthy."
That much Leon had guessed.
Anise put one last shot inside him, before rubbing the area. She then pulled down his sleeve.
Leon noticed and tried to stand up, but Anise did not let him.
"About this skill of yours... Creator... How did you obtain it? Clearly, this is not a Unique Skill. That much I can tell."
Leon leaned back against the wall, and glanced up at Anise.
He saw a vivid expression on her face.
"...."
Haru knew quite a bit about this world he had created. About Leon Valentine, about everything else.
But...
Lately, things had been forcing him to see the world with a whole new perspective. Something which Haru truly wished to be just a mere theory.
However, meeting Shin once again, the things he said, and the similar things which Dreamweaver said...
He just—
"Got something on your mind? You can talk to me."
Anise smiled subtly.
Leon stared at her face, which remained radiant despite him waking up from a ten year coma.
"Doctor Anise..." Leon slowly asked. "Do you know what my skill is?"
"Why are you asking me this? This is my first time ever seeing it." Anise did not even try to hide it. "I know, Leon, that you are strong. But this reality manipulating skill of yours, it is not something which should exist here. Especially for a human."
A skill so powerful that it could rewrite events, even affecting the Calamities, clearly meant that this skill was above the highest reality.
Hearing Anise’s reply, Leon bit his tongue.
Leon just did not understand why Anise of all people had been involved in this.
Anise continued. "Even if I were—"
"Doctor." Leon sighed. Narrowing his eyes, he looked dead into her eyes and asked. "Why are you lying?"
Anise’s eyes visibly widened. Looking at those golden eyes which reminded her of a certain entity, she stuttered to even speak.
"Wha–What do you mean?"
Leon stood up, and fully turned to Anise standing in front of him.
"Shin Kataino." Leon said the name. "Why did he come to Evana?"
"...!!"
Leon caught her reaction.
In reality, he had pieced it together the moment he saw that portrait. The one of Lumina standing beside Anise and Irene.
"You do not have to answer." Leon said.
He had his answer before she even spoke.
"He was here for you."
"...."
Leon noticed the way her breath hitched, and the way her pupils shrank.
That was all he needed.
’There is only one thing a man like Shin would want from Anise.’
"He wanted a solution." Leon said.
Anise went still. And in that stillness, she understood.
The young man before her had already known the answer before he ever asked. He was not seeking information from her. He was just testing her.
Weighing her, whether she was worth the truth.
Anise realized then that she would have to be very careful around this boy.
"Shall I go on, Doctor?"
Leon’s voice was calm. But there was no mistaking it for kindness.
"Haaah..." Giving up, Anise pinched her forehead. "No need for that. You are right.... He did visit me."
Leon’s expression did not change.
"And the reason for his visit." Leon said. "It was Elizabeth, am I right?"
Anise nodded slowly.
Leon continued without missing a beat.
"Did something happen to her..." He paused. "No. What was happening to her?"
Anise did not answer immediately.
Instead, she moved away from where she had been standing and slowly sat down on the ground inside the cave. Her back leaned against the cold stone wall. She tilted her head up and stared at the rough ceiling above them.
Then her gaze drifted back down to Leon.
He was still standing. She gestured for him to sit too.
Leon did not move.
Anise sighed.
"Sigh... you were just seventeen when you arrived at Evana." She said softly. "It has been ten years now. Look at you."
Her eyes traced his face. The beard and the hair grew out past his shoulders. The maturity that did not belong on a young man’s features.
"I have also heard from Irene." Anise continued. "That you have been enquiring about Elizabeth."
Anise chooses her words carefully next.
"Tell me Leon... Why do you want to know? What was she to you? What is your goal?"
Leon did not think twice.
"I want to bring her back."
The cave fell into a different kind of silence.
As soon as Leon said those words, Anise understood.
All her doubts regarding Leon had been cleared in a single sentence.
And she did not like it. Not one bit.
"So Shin actually succeeded." Anise muttered.
Her face twisted into something between disbelief and dread.
"That mad man... he actually succeeded."
"What do you mean he succeeded?" Leon asked.
Anise did not answer. Instead, she raised her head slowly.
"Leon. One last question. Did you start having this urge to save Elizabeth..."
She paused.
"After you made contact with any of Shin’s Fragments?"
Leon’s body froze.
Because he is now very close to the truth.
Anise’s face fell.
"So that is what happened." She whispered.
Anise covered her mouth with one hand. Her eyes started to water. Leon noticed that it wasn’t sadness. But, something closer to terror. freewebnσvel.cøm
"Leon..." She said, "Do you know what Shin did at Evana?"
