Chapter 17: The Strike Back Of the Fake Innocence

After saying her piece, Estelle immediately headed upstairs.
Before the butler could recover from his shock, the front door opened again. Chapman instinctively turned his head and was met with the grim sight of Nathaniel’s face.
"Sir? That’s odd. Didn’t Dr. Lockwood say..."
Nathaniel strode upstairs, his expression dark as thunder. ’Not only did that woman post my number in some sleazy ad, but she also filled Chapman’s head with nonsense! Just great.’
Deep into the night, Nathaniel still couldn’t sleep.
For some reason, every time he closed his eyes, his mind replayed the scene in the car. Under the dim lights, Yara’s pale skin and trembling body lingered vividly in his memory.
’And right now, that woman is sleeping in the room next to mine... I can’t keep thinking about this.’
Nathaniel got up and took a cold shower. Then he picked up the intercom and said in a low, hoarse voice, "You have half an hour to move to the third floor."
Estelle, who had already fallen asleep, was jolted awake by the call.
"Are you insane?!" she barked.
’I already posted his number in that ad. What more does he want? The man’s gone mad in the middle of the night!’
The next morning...
When Nathaniel came downstairs, he was surprised to find Christian already sitting obediently at the dining table.
"Daddy."
The irritation from the previous night vanished instantly.
Nathaniel walked over and asked gently, "Why are you up so early?"
Christian’s eyes darted around. ’Of course, I got up early for the plan we talked about yesterday.’
The thought made his smile even sweeter. "Daddy, Luke said I can go to kindergarten now. I want to go."
Nathaniel had always wanted Christian to make more friends, but the boy’s health had been too fragile in the past. The last time he attended kindergarten, the Lockwood family had stormed in and caused a scene only a few days later, forcing him to leave.
Seeing how eager Christian was, Nathaniel said gently, "Alright. Daddy will take you."
Christian immediately hopped down from his chair.
Just then, someone burst through the door.
"Nathaniel..."
Ignoring the butler’s attempts to stop her, Noelle rushed inside. "Nathaniel, Christian’s health is fragile! Kindergartens are crowded. Kids are always pushing and shoving. What if something happens to him?"
’I was greatly embarrassed yesterday, and Nathaniel even started doubting me. I have to get here early and win back some goodwill.’
"I know I was wrong yesterday. You can blame me, Nathaniel, but you can’t be reckless with a child’s health. Oh, Christian is so precious to me. I’m just so worried..." she said with a sob. ƒгeewebnovёl.com
Nathaniel’s expression darkened. He wanted to throw Noelle out, but she was right about one thing. He couldn’t afford to be careless with Christian’s health.
He turned toward his son. "Christian..."
A dark glint flashed through Christian’s eyes before he swiftly concealed the revulsion and indifference beneath it. His eyes reddened instantly as the little drama king made his grand entrance.
"D-Daddy, I’ve been eating all my food and taking my medicine. Going to kindergarten won’t be a problem. Don’t you trust me?" he asked pitifully.
Then he cast Noelle a cautious glance, bit his lower lip, and outperformed her at her own game of feigned innocence. "I really want to go to kindergarten instead of staying home alone all the time. I know Aunt Noelle means well... That’s why every time I start kindergarten, she tells everyone I’m a sickly weakling and that they shouldn’t play with me."
Nathaniel’s gaze turned icy.
Noelle’s eyes widened in shock. ’What is this little bastard saying?! He...He...’
Tears now welled in Christian’s eyes as he laid the innocent act on even thicker. "I just want friends... but every time I finally make one, Aunt Noelle scares them away. None of the other kids dare come near me.
"Aunt Noelle and Grandma are always going to the kindergarten and causing trouble, so my classmates and teachers don’t like me. Daddy, I don’t understand... Why doesn’t Aunt Noelle want me to have friends?"
Even if Christian’s explanation was somewhat muddled, Nathaniel was no fool. How could he fail to understand Noelle’s intentions?
His voice turned ominous. "So this is how you’ve been ’taking care’ of Christian?"
Noelle felt as though she had swallowed a fly. ’This little bastard actually learned how to snitch!’
"N-No, that’s not it! Nathaniel, listen to me! I only did that because so many children these days have ulterior motives. They know Christian is your son, so they try to get close to him on purpose..."
Nathaniel’s gaze grew even colder.
Without another word, he shot her a look of pure disdain, took Christian’s hand, and turned to leave. "You will no longer involve yourself in Christian’s affairs. Chapman, see her out."
"Nathaniel! Nathaniel..."
Watching Nathaniel leave with Christian, Noelle seethed with resentment. ’Damn it! What the hell got into that little bastard today?! No... Nathaniel keeps me around only because of that little brat. If...’
She didn’t dare finish the thought. ’I can’t... Oh, that’s right. All these years, whenever Christian enrolled in kindergarten, I always showed up as "Christian’s mother." I can do that today too.
’Nathaniel would never embarrass me in front of strangers. As long as I hold the title of mother of Nathaniel Sloan’s son, no one can get rid of me.’
...
Meanwhile, Estelle came downstairs with a yawn.
Seeing no one else around, she glanced at the two kiddos beside her. "We’re registering for kindergarten today. You two had better not get any bright ideas about skipping class. Especially you, Mr. Zachery."
The twins always felt kindergarten had nothing to teach them and were constantly plotting ways to skip it. As such, Estelle decided to warn them in advance.
The two kids nodded obediently.
Each took one of her hands, and the three of them headed out together.
After they had walked a short distance, Estelle looked down in surprise. "My little cool guy is being so obedient today?"
The little cool guy in question, Zachery, immediately looked guilty. His eyes darted everywhere. "Mommy, well, I..."
’Mommy can’t find out about our plan with Christian ahead of time!’
"Because my brother did some self-reflection last night," Mia said dutifully. "Mommy, let’s go register. Don’t worry. I’ll keep an eye on Zachery."
Half an hour later, Estelle stepped out of the car with her two kids. "Alright. Mommy’s going to take you to the director’s office and get you enrolled."
...
Meanwhile, in the kindergarten director’s office. freewebnσvel.cѳm
The director, Sam Miller, wiped the sweat from his brow.
He had been humming a tune on his way to work that morning, only to receive a massive shock the moment he stepped into his office.
Who was Nathaniel Sloan? It was no exaggeration to say that if he so much as frowned, the entire city of Crestfall would tremble.
Now that Nathaniel’s son was enrolling in kindergarten, how could Sam not be a nervous wreck?
Looking at Christian, who was waiting obediently to one side, and Nathaniel Sloan himself filling out the enrollment paperwork, Sam swallowed nervously.
Forcing himself to follow procedure, he began awkwardly, "Um... Mr. Sloan, it’s like this. Our kindergarten has a rule that, barring special circumstances, we require contact information for both parents during enrollment. Regarding Christian’s mother..."
Nathaniel’s brow furrowed slightly. ’The child’s mother? Following the instructions in Estelle’s "suicide note," I publicly claimed that Noelle was Christian’s biological mother. But Noelle has never truly taken responsibility for him. Whose name am I supposed to write in the "Mother" field?’
Just then, another knock sounded at the director’s office door.
