Chapter 14: Who On Earth Are You?
Editor: Henyee Translations
What was Nathaniel doing there? And how much had he heard?
The group instantly panicked. "Mr. Sloan, we—we were just..."
Nathaniel merely shot them a cold glance, and moments later, their phones began ringing one after another with calls from their families.
As they listened, the color drained from their faces. Evernight International had abruptly terminated all cooperation with their families. All because of a few careless remarks.
Hadn’t everyone always said Noelle was Nathaniel’s treasured love? Hadn’t they said he had never cared about Estelle at all?
Not far away, Noelle’s gaze landed on the swimming pool, and an idea suddenly flashed through her mind. She immediately summoned a waiter. "Please ask Miss Yara to join me here."
When the waiter relayed the message, Estelle raised an eyebrow. She knew exactly what Noelle was planning.
Fine. If Noelle wanted to play this kind of game, she’d let her experience what it felt like to suffer in silence.
Estelle strolled over to the poolside. "Is there anything you need?"
The sight of her calm, unbothered expression instantly irritated Noelle, who slowly extended her hand. "Dr. Lockwood, I truly want to apologize to you. If you’re still upset, then—"
Estelle suddenly grabbed her wrist. "Are you planning to push me into the pool again and then cry and tell everyone that I jumped in myself to frame you?" She leaned closer. "You’ve been using the same trick for seven years. You haven’t even improved it."
"You—"
Before Noelle could react, Estelle shoved her forward, making Noelle fall straight into the swimming pool. The surrounding guests gasped in shock.
What had just happened? How had Noelle ended up in the water?
Noelle surfaced, looking drenched and disheveled, her eyes immediately turning red. "Miss Yara, what are you doing? I only wanted to apologize. You could have said so if you didn’t want to accept my apology. Why would you push me into the water? Nathaniel? Help me! I can’t swim."
The guests exchanged uneasy glances. Although Noelle had crossed the line with Yara, wasn’t Yara’s behavior way over the top as well?
"Mr. Sloan..."
"Mr. Sloan, what are you..."
Nathaniel’s dark gaze slowly settled on Estelle. Silence prevailed for two seconds before he calmly looked away and told a bodyguard, "Get her out."
Noelle nearly choked on another mouthful of water, looking even more pitiful as she said, "Dr. Lockwood, I really don’t understand. I just said a few harsh words. That’s no reason to be targeting me like this. I’m not a strong woman, I..."
Estelle almost wanted to applaud her performance. She was indeed good at acting innocent. Even in the pool, she was able to play the victim flawlessly.
But then again, she wasn’t the only person who could act innocent there.
The sharpness in Estelle’s eyes disappeared as she pretended to be shocked. "Noelle, would you really go so far as to jump into the water just to frame me?"
The crowd that had been ready to accuse Estelle now froze.
Noelle bit her lip, looking really aggrieved as she said, "I’m the one who fell into the pool, yet you’re saying that I’m trying to frame you? What’s that about?"
Estelle frowned and put on a confused look. "You asked me to join you here because you said that you had something to tell me. The moment I arrived, you jumped into the pool. That was a calculated move, wasn’t it? What a shame there aren’t any security cameras here. I don’t even have any evidence to back up my words."
The entire area fell silent. Even Nathaniel looked up abruptly. Everyone was reminded of the story they had just heard from the gossiping guests.
In the past, Estelle, who had just been adopted by the Lockwoods, had fallen into a swimming pool during the cold winter time and she had insisted that Noelle had pushed her. Noelle had claimed that Estelle had jumped in herself to frame her.
The incident had basically been reenacted right before them.
Noelle nearly exploded. She was not lying. She had been set up!
"Nathaniel! It really was her! Yara pushed me!"
"Noelle." Estelle sighed. "You’re really making a scene. I could just kick you out of this place if I hated you as much as you claim. I’m the Chief Perfumer of Star, and I have the right to do whatever I want with you. Why would I go to all the trouble of staging something like this?"
Nathaniel pressed his lips tightly as he thought of what Noelle had said seven years ago by the pool.
"Estelle, you’re really making a scene. I could just tell dad and mom not to bring you back home if I hated you as much as you claim. I’m the heiress of the Lockwood Family, and I have the right to do whatever I want with you. Why would I go to all the trouble of staging something like this? What a shame that there aren’t any security cameras here. I don’t even have any evidence to back up my words."
Then, Estelle let out another sigh. "Everyone says you’re kind and gentle, Noelle, so I really don’t understand why you would do something like this. You spread rumors that I’m a mistress and then threw yourself into a pool to frame me. Whatever, never mind that. I forgive you."
Meanwhile, Noelle’s past words pushed their way to the surface again. freewēbnoveℓ.com
"Estelle, I thought you were kind and gentle, so I really don’t understand why you would do something like this. You spread rumors that I’m a fake heiress and then threw yourself into a pool to frame me. Whatever, never mind that. I forgive you. We are family, after all."
Back at the gala, someone spoke up. "Yeah, that makes sense. Miss Yara is the host of the gala, so she could have had Noelle kicked out if she had wanted to. She wouldn’t have needed to resort to such petty means."
"Plus, Miss Yara has forgiven Miss Noelle for what she did. She is far too kind."
The same words surfaced again.
"Oh god, it was so kind of Miss Noelle to forgive Estelle for what she did. No wonder the Lockwoods love Miss Noelle so much and dislike Estelle!"
Nathaniel closed his eyes suddenly, feeling as though his heart was gripped by a hand.
It was clear what had happened.
Back then, Estelle had just been brought back to the Lockwoods, so she had no idea what was going on. She’d had no one to lean on, yet Nathaniel had chosen to believe Noelle instead.
Just a moment ago, Yara had recreated the entire incident right before his eyes to present the truth in vivid detail.
Noelle sensed that she was starting to get some disdainful looks from the onlookers. Feeling like she was about to pass out, she cried, "Nathaniel, you have to believe me! It was Yara who did it! You have to believe me!"
Nathaniel looked at her coldly and said, "If I chose to believe you now, then I should have believed Estelle back then."
Noelle felt as though a thunderbolt had struck her. "Na... Nathaniel, please!"
Nathaniel raised a hand and the bodyguards immediately stepped forward and dragged her away.
Then, he lowered his head to gesture at Henry. "Thank you for today. I should get going."
He had come to secure the Star partnership for the Lockwood family and to fulfill what he believed had been Estelle’s wish. By this point, he didn’t think that there was any need to do that anymore.
The gala gradually came to an end as the guests began to leave one after another, satisfied after witnessing such an exciting show.
When almost everyone else had left, Estelle started to walk to the parking lot in a good mood.
Not bad. Everything had gone smoothly tonight. She could move forward with the next step of her plan. However, her ultimate goal was not to expose Noelle. She was going to make every single person pay for the harm they had done to her before.
Lost in thought, she searched for her car when, suddenly, the door of a limo opened. As she was pulled inside, she let out a scream.
"Ah!"
Her figure-hugging gown split, and she felt her mind go completely blank. "Sloan! What the hell are you doing?"
Nathaniel’s hand rested lightly against her waist as he asked in a hoarse voice, "Who on earth are you?"
