Chapter 72: An unexpected surprise

Emily didn’t wait for an answer. She ripped the envelope open, pulled out the check, and snapped a photo of it.

"What are you doing?"

"Evidence," Emily hissed.

Then, with a look of pure disgust, she gripped the edges and tore the paper in two..

Rip.

Finally, she leaned over and snapped one more photo: the pile of shredded paper.

"Step two," Emily said, her eyes flashing with a dark victory. "Now we have proof of the bribe and proof that you can’t be bought. Let her try to lie her way out of this."

She carefully tucked the two pieces back into the envelope. ƒreewebηoveℓ.com

An hour later, Emily looked at her watch and then at Lyvana.

"Should we cancel the appointment with the doctor today? You’ve had a lot to deal with."

Lyvana shook her head immediately. Julian had set up this appointment for both of them. Even if everything had been a lie, this was the one thing she was most grateful for.

"No," Lyvana said firmly. "We aren’t canceling."

She grabbed her coat. Dealing with the complications of her love life was one thing, but the health of her best friend was a battle she couldn’t afford to lose.

The hospital was quiet, filled with the soft hum of machines and the smell of antiseptic. Lyvana sat on the edge of the exam table, her hands tucked under her legs. Emily stood by the window, looking out at the city.

A while later, a nurse entered the room with a small tray. "I need to take some blood for the lab. The doctor wants a fresh set of tests before we go down for your scans."

"What are you checking for?" Emily asked.

"It’s standard procedure," the nurse explained as she prepped the needle. "We check your blood counts, and we always run other preliminary tests before doing any high-resolution scans. We have to make sure it’s safe to proceed with the radiation."

After the nurse left, Emily gave Lyvana a long, tight hug. She could feel her friend’s sadness.

"Wait, remind me again why we are doing this?" Emily asked, pulling back to look at her. "You’ve been through so much today already. Why the rush for these tests?"

Lyvana looked at her friend and forced a small, tired smile. She couldn’t tell Emily the truth — that in her previous life, she had already died from cancer because it was found too late. This time, she wasn’t going to let that happen. She was going to find it and kill it before it could take her away again.

"It’s just the first of many tests, Emy," Lyvana said softly. "We have to be healthy, right? We can’t build our empire if we’re not around to see it."

Emily nodded, looking relieved. "You’re right. Total health. We’re going to be the healthiest powerful women in the city."

Lyvana laughed. Emily always did know how to make her laugh. She felt a flicker of hope. By coming here early, she was already changing the future. She was rewriting the ending of this story.

Twenty minutes later, the door opened. It wasn’t the nurse; it was the doctor.

"Hello, I am Dr. Mia," she said. "The scans you scheduled are ready for you downstairs. The nurse is waiting outside to take Ms. Emily down first so we can get started on the paperwork and the initial setup."

Emily smiled, gave Lyvana’s hand a quick squeeze, and went out of the room.

Once the door closed, Dr. Mia’s expression turned more serious, though her voice remained gentle.

"However, we have to pause your tests, Ms. Lyvana. Your preliminary blood work came back with something we weren’t expecting."

Lyvana stepped away from the window, her face turning pale. She thought of the life she had lost before. Was something wrong with her?

"Am I sick?" she asked, her voice trembling.

The doctor shook her head quickly. "No, it’s not that. But the HCG levels in your blood are very high. Ms. Lyvana, the reason we cannot perform the radiation scans right now is because the tests show you are pregnant."

The shock hit Lyvana like a physical wave. Her legs felt weak, and she sat down on the chair. She opened her mouth to speak, to ask how this was possible, but no words came out.

Dr. Mia stepped closer, her voice soft and calm.

"I know this is a lot to take in," Dr. Mia said. "Usually, we schedule the first dating scan between eight and ten weeks. But since we caught this today during your routine check, I am going to refer you to a gynecologist immediately."

The doctor looked at her tablet and then back at Lyvana.

"They will do a preliminary ultrasound by next week to confirm how far along you are. Because of your pregnancy, we won’t be doing any heavy scans for you today. We want to keep everything as safe as possible."

Lyvana finally found her voice. "Am pregnant?"

"Yes," Dr. Mia smiled. "The gynaecologist will take over your care from here. Since your blood work shows you are otherwise very healthy, there is no need to worry. We just need to start your prenatal vitamins and set up your first official prenatal visit."

For a moment, Lyvana didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. The doctor had been very clear: she couldn’t have any children.

How the hell am I pregnant? she wondered, her mind racing.

Was it because she had returned to the past? Or was the system of this new life different than the one before? She needed to find the medical records from the tests she had done with Mark last year. She had to compare them to what Dr. Mia was telling her now.

Dr. Mia’s voice broke through her thoughts. "Ms. Lyvana, do you have any questions for me?"

"Are you... sure?" she asked quietly. "Could there be a mistake?"

Dr. Mia shook her head. "No, there’s no mistake."

She glanced briefly at her tablet before looking back at Lyvana.

"This case was marked as a priority. The appointment was arranged by someone on the hospital board, so we were extra careful. We ran the test more than once to be sure. You are definitely pregnant."
