Chapter 53: Commander Vespera

Esme left Julian standing in horrifying silence and descended the staircase with perfect grace. As she stepped back onto the ballroom floor, the nobles looked at her as someone dangerous.

A minor lord stepped forward, raising his glass in an attempt to talk to her but Esme gave him a dead stare. The man swallowed, lowered his glass, and quickly vanished in the crowd.

She looked in the direction of Sun Room, Eveyr had still not come out. Panic crept inside her as Sylas’s words echoed in her mind.

What does the emperor want to talk to him about? Is it about the system?? Does he want to tell Eveyr???

Her confidence faltered slightly at the thought of Eveyr knowing about the system. If Eveyr got to know that system could take her away back to her real world...she was sure Eveyr would do something that could destroy the system to keep her with him.

Before she could do anything, a loud sound echoed through the room. Esme turned towards in the direction of sun room again as Eveyr finally stepped inside the ballroom. He looked irritated, his eyes already scanning the ballroom like a starving wolf looking for its mate.

But he wasn’t alone. Walking right beside him was a familiar woman. She was the same woman she had seen him laughing with from a distance during the hunting day weeks ago. But this was the first time Esme saw her properly.

In an Imperial Gala women were supposed to wear gowns and jewels but she wasn’t wearing any. She was tall, had muscles, and wore black armour and thick fur coat. Her left cheek had a scar and her eyes were assessing everyone coldly.

Esme’s mind began racing immediately. Eveyr was a paranoid yandere who didn’t like people getting closer to him. Yet, he allowed her to walk well within his personal space without any compulsion.

Eveyr’s eyes immediately spotted Esme among the crowd. Without waiting any second, he walked towards her and the woman followed him.

The second Eveyr reached Esme, his one hand immediately rested on her back as he pressed the ward with his other thumb, checking her pulse. Finding her heartbeat perfectly steady and calm, his rigid shoulders relaxed a little and sighed in relief.

"I am here," Eveyr whispered, leaning down slightly. "The Emperor just wasted my time. Are you okay?"

"I am perfectly fine," Esme assured him, her eyes moving to the woman standing behind him.

Eveyr followed her gaze and turned slightly.

"Esme," Eveyr said as he moved to stand beside her putting his arm around her waist. "Let me formally introduce you. This is Lady Vespera. Commander of my Northern Vanguard."

"Commander Vespera. It is a pleasure to finally meet you properly," Esme said, smiling politely.

Vespera didn’t bow or even nod. She stood perfectly still and took a step towards Esme. Her cold eyes scanned Esme’s gown, glittering diamond earrings, and her pale skin. Vespera did not offer her the fake politeness. She looked at Esme with disgust.

"He collared you," Vespera said as she observed the faint glowing mark on her neck. Then she looked at Eveyr. "You tied your own pulse to a liability."

"She is not a liability, Vespera," Eveyr replied immediately. "She is my wife."

Vespera snorted in response. She turned towards Esme again, looking at her as if she were nothing more than a stain on the floor.

"And the spy you spared," Vespera said, looking straight into Esme’s eyes. "She looks like she would fly with the wind, Eveyr," Vespera sneered, shaking her head in disappointment. "Julian must be laughing at us for letting this fragile woman sit beside you."

The entire ballroom held its breath. Courtiers nearby fell silent immediately. Nobles had their eardrums ruptured and their throats crushed by Eveyr just for looking at Esme. Lord Victor had nearly been executed over a glass of champagne just an hour ago. But this time, nothing of that sort happened.

"Watch your tongue, Vespera," Eveyr growled. "She is your Duchess. You will give her the respect her title demands."

"I bled for the Vanguard, Eveyr," Vespera shot back without a single ounce of fear. "I earned my title in the mud. I won’t bow to a pampered brat just because she wears your ring."

Esme smirked. She looked at Eveyr and waited for him to form a shadow blade and attack Vespera with it for insulting her in front of her everyone.

More points! And I didn’t have to do anything! Perfect!!

But instead of summoning his magic, Eveyr glared at Vespera with fury.

"Enough, Vespera," Eveyr shouted. "Do not test my patience tonight."

The surrounding nobles exchanged bewildered glances. No one had ever seen Duke Aldric spare someone after they had disrespected his wife.

But they didn’t know it was a privilege that Vespera had earned over years while fighting beside him in the battlefields, facing bloodshed, and giving Eveyr her unwavering loyalty.

Esme couldn’t believe her eyes and ears. It was the first time since she had woken up in this world when someone had insulted her right to her face, challenged her authority, and disrespected her in front of all nobles and Eveyr had just issued a verbal warning instead of attacking that person.

Vespera held Eveyr’s gaze for a long time, completely unafraid of him. Then she huffed and crossed her arms arrogantly.

Esme stared at Vespera in disbelief and realized she wasn’t just a soldier to Eveyr. She was his comrade. She had bled with him, might have saved his life for a number of times while fighting brutal wars by his side. And she...she was nothing except for being Eveyr’s wife.

She has immunity. If there is someone in the world who could insult me without triggering Eveyr’s madness...it means I still don’t have full control over Eveyr.

And in a survival game where Eveyr’s jealousy and protective rage are my only source of life... she is the most dangerous person for me.
