Chapter 44: The Heart Of The Monster
Lord Sterling and Maria froze. The arrogance they had due to the backing of the Imperial Church disappeared the moment they saw Eveyr.
Eveyr did not even yell or was holding any weapon. His silence was far more terrifying than that.
He stepped inside the room and the shadows moved swiftly on the carpets wrapping tightly around Lord Sterling and Maria’s ankles.
"What... what is this?" Lord Sterling stammered, his knees weakening. "You can’t touch us! We have the Emperor’s order!"
Eveyr didn’t even glance at him. His eyes were fixed on Maria. Sensing the danger, Maria began to cry.
"Duke Aldric, please," Maria pleaded. "I am her sister. I was only..."
Eveyr took a step forward and wrapped his hand around her wrist.
"You touched my wife," Eveyr muttered.
Then he squeezed her wrist, crushing the bones.
Maria screamed in pain, but no sound came. Eveyr’s magic sealed the air from her lungs, choking her throat and preventing her from making any noise.
Maria fell to her knees, gasping and writhing in agony as Eveyr looked down on her as if she were an insect who had touched his wife.
Behind them, Esme finally stopped pretending to tremble. She straightened her posture, turning from a terrified girl to a woman radiating authority. She smiled and walked over to her father.
She picked up a stack of legal papers from the tray and slammed them on his chest.
"You didn’t come here to save me, Father. You came for a Church buyout," Esme said sharply. "You wanted to trade my freedom for Julian’s gold. But you are too late."
Lord Sterling tried to catch the papers with his trembling hands, his eyes moving anxiously over the text he hadn’t bothered to read earlier.
"Using the resources of the Southern Iron Mines, I bought out every single debt, mortgage, and trade route tied to the Sterling estate," Esme said. "You stamped the transfer of your remaining assets yourself just minutes ago. You are now completely bankrupt. I own your lands, your house, and your future."
Lord Sterling glanced from the documents to his unrecognizable daughter in horror.
"The Church cannot annul a marriage based on mind control if the alleged victim willingly rejects the accusation," Esme said and stepped back. "Tell the Crown Prince his plan failed. And if you ever show me your face again, Father, I will myself ask my husband to finish what he started."
Esme glanced at Eveyr and gave him a small nod.
Eveyr immediately released his magical hold on Maria. She collapsed to the floor completely, gasping for air and clutching her swollen wrist.
Eveyr gestured and the shadows wrapped around Lord Sterling and Maria tightened. Then the shadows dragged the sobbing Maria and the broken Lord Sterling across the floor and threw them out of the townhouse.
Inside, Eveyr gently cupped Esme’s face. His thumb hovered just above the red mark on her cheek where Maria had slapped her. He couldn’t touch it.
"I’m burning, Esme," Eveyr whispered. "It burns me to see you hurt."
The fury that had consumed him just a few moments ago had vanished completely, leaving behind only guilt. All he could think was...if he had broken his restraint even a second sooner, she would never have been hit.
Esme looked into his eyes, and for a moment, everything around her disappeared. Her mind wandered back to her real life. She remembered how she died alone in a tiny apartment, overworked, unloved, and unnoticed. She was sure no one would have noticed that she was dead after a few days.
She couldn’t help but compare her existence in that life to this one. In this life, she had a man who was willing to kill holy paladins, burn cities, and even destroy himself just to keep her safe.
She felt a strange, yet beautiful warmth spread through her body. She felt happy and cherished.
A faint smile tugged at her lips as she slid her hands past his shoulders and tangled her fingers in hair. Then without thinking, she pulled him down and pressed her lips against his.
This time the kiss wasn’t strategic or calculated. She had kissed him because she wanted to. Eveyr immediately wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, pulling her against him.
The kiss ignited like wildfire. His lips were demanding yet tender. Hi tilted his head and deepened the kiss, his tongue brushing on her lower lip, coaxing her to open them.
When she did, he groaned in her mouth as he tasted her like a starving man. His one hand slid to her neck while the other gripped her hip so tightly that she thought she might melt. Esme kissed him back with the same passion.
Eveyr then scooped her into his arms, still kissing her. Esme clung tightly to his neck as he carried her out of the drawing room and walked towards their bedroom.
Eveyr kicked the door shut with a loud thud. He didn’t stop kissing her even for a second. Their mouths stayed joined as he put her on the bed.
They kissed for a long time. His lips moved from her mouth to her jaw, then back again, as if he couldn’t bear to stop tasting her even for a second.
No clothes were removed nor did his hands had moved lower. There was no rush. Right now, they both were just lost in a kiss that they wanted to last forever.
Later that night, when Eveyr was asleep, his arm was still wrapped around her waist protectively. Esme carefully opened her eyes, looked at him and smiled.
She couldn’t sleep, the kiss kept replaying in her mind again and again. To clear her mind, she opened the system interface.
Everything was perfect. Her health was fine, and her points were increasing at a good pace. She closed the interface, and put her hand over Eveyr’s hand on her stomach.
Perhaps... this world could give me something my real world never had.
