Chapter 16: Begging My Yandere Husband

"Don’t go. Please," Esme said, before she could stop herself.

Eveyr froze. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard. Esme was the woman who had always challenged him, mocked him, and stared at him without flinching. She had never once requested a single thing from him. And now she was begging him.

"What’s happening to you?" he whispered, his voice full of fear and confusion.

Esme didn’t have an answer. She couldn’t tell him about the system, the points or how much his obsession was necessary for her survival. She tightened her grip on his hand, her nails digging into his palms.

"Stay," she whispered. "Just stay with me always."

Why does she need me to stay close to her? She hates me. Then why?

He had a lot of questions. But right now, Esme’s health was his topmost priority. He leaned forward and buried his face in her neck.

"I’m not going anywhere," he murmured. "I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere, Esme."

He turned his head and pressed his lips against her throat. Her pulse was faint, but steady nonetheless.

"If Julian thinks he can separate me from you, then he is the biggest fool in this entire world," Eveyr said. "No one can take you away from me."

Esme closed her eyes in relief and felt the life and warmth returning to her dying body. The system interface immediately flickered across her vision.

[SYSTEM ALERT: Vitality Restored.

Current Health: 100%]

I survived!!!

She smiled and opened her eyes, her smile vanishing instantly. Eveyr was hovering over her, looking at her with so intensely and with so much possessiveness that her soul trembled. The devotion in his gaze now looked close to dependence and it terrified her.

And she realized she may have stopped the system from killing her, but in doing so, she had just handed her yandere husband the key to her cage. And she was now sure, he would never, ever let her go.

Esme’s breathing gradually deepened as she fell asleep. Eveyr stayed beside her the entire time. He propped himself on one elbow, watching her sleep peacefully. Hours later, when the drained colour had finally returned to her cheeks and he was certain she was stable, he finally moved.

He picked up his cloak from the floor and carefully wrapped it around her. Then he gently brushed his knuckles over her cheek and finally stood up. His expression immediately changed to calculating coldness. He opened the bedroom door and found George, his second-in-command standing outside.

"My Lord," George said, bowing.

"Post the Vanguard’s inner guard," Eveyr ordered. "Set a perimeter of shadows around this room and the estate borders. No one is allowed to enter or leave the estate."

George looked up, a flicker of worry crossing his face.

"But My Lord...what if there’s a royal order? Or an imperial messenger?"

"Then you’ll have blood to clean from the floors, George," he replied. "Keep her safe."

"With my life, my Lord." George bowed, accepting his command.

As Eveyr turned to walk away, George noticed his blood stained clothes from yesterday’s hunting event.

"Should I have the staff bring fresh clothes before you leave?"

Eveyr paused and looked down at his clothes, stained with Esme’s blood. A wicked smile appeared on his lips.

"No," Eveyr said softly. "Let Julian see exactly whose blood is on his hands."

Meanwhile, deep within the palace’s inner sanctum Crown Prince Julian stood at the head of a large table covered with the maps of southern territory.

"Eveyr’s departure will make Esme completely vulnerable," he said to his generals, a smug smile playing on his lips. "After her marriage, she has changed a lot. She is hiding something. We’ll have a whole year to find out exactly what’s wrong with her while her monster husband bleeds in the south."

The generals around him chuckled, nodding in agreement. Sylas stood silently in a corner, watching all of them. He had a habit of noticing what other people missed, and his highly analytical mind had been fixated on Esme since she had come to the palace for tea.

Suddenly a deafening crack echoed down the corridor outside. A few generals immediately drew their swords. But before they could even understand what was going on, the massive doors of the room blew off from the hinges, shattering on the floor.

The royal guards shouted in alarm. The generals immediately formed a protective wall around Julian.

Eveyr stepped inside and the temperature in the room dropped. Julian’s smile vanished instantly.

"Duke Aldric," Julian said, clearing his throat. "What are you doing here? You are supposed to be at your estate, preparing your Vanguard for the southern deployment."

Eveyr walked forward, his eyes fixed on Julian. The royal guards instinctively retreated, unable to tolerate his magic. The swords in their hands rattled and a few young soldiers began to tremble seeing Eveyr approach.

Eveyr stopped at the edge of the table and looked down at the maps. He placed both hands under the table and flipped it. The huge table lifted off the ground, crashing onto its side before flipping completely and slamming on the floor.

"I am not going anywhere, Julian," he announced.

Julian’s shock turned into anger. He could feel the eyes of his generals on him, waiting for him to react to this blatant disrespect. He raised his hand, gesturing his guards to lower their weapons.

"Have you lost your mind?" Julian hissed as he took a step forward. "Refusing an imperial deployment is treason, Eveyr. You are defying the Emperor’s command. Let me remind you, the punishment for treason is death."

Eveyr tilted his head and a cold smile spread across his face.

"Then send your executioners," Eveyr challenged him. "Send your royal guards. Send your entire imperial army."

He took another step closer to Julian.

"But hear me well, Your Highness." Eveyr’s voice dropped to a whisper. "If a single soldier steps within ten miles of my estate while my wife is recovering...I will make sure none of them returns. I will stack their severed bodies on your palace gates for everyone to see what happens if anyone tries to disturb the Duchess of Aldric."

His eyes burned with world-ending rage.

"Do not test me."
