Chapter 243: TI AMO

Abigail

I stared at Finnegan, my heart starting to race faster with each second.

I had literally spent the night in his arms — he couldn’t possibly be hiding another thing like a whole ass twin brother again, could he?

The yacht trip had been a beautiful escape, but reality always came crashing back. How long would this last?

God, I was so sick of it. Finnegan’s eyes softened as he gazed at me. He tried to brush it off with that calm voice of his. "It’s nothing you need to worry about right now, Abigail. Just some legal moves I had to make."

Angel bounced on her toes, sauntering closer. "It’s nothing. Dad sued Grandma! It’s all over the news. Everybody’s talking about how the Wolfe CEO is accusing the matriarch of being involved in the murder of his assistant’s parents. And they’re saying, get this Abby, that uncle Devin is alive! It’s everywhere!"

The words hit me like a slap.

I froze, staring at Finnegan. "You... what?"

He rubbed the back of his neck, looking a little sheepish. "I made the case public. The evidence we have, your testimony, the connection to Devin — I had my lawyers file it and leak key details to reputable news outlets. Mother can no longer hide in the shadows."

My mouth opened and closed. Shock rippled through me, followed by a wave of disbelief. "Why would you do that?!"

His shoulders dropped and he exhaled slowly. "Abigail, it’s fine."

"It’s not fine," I said, pushing away from him. "Are you kidding? This is going to damage your company’s reputation. The stock price, the board, the investors — everyone is going to panic. You didn’t have to make it this public. We could have kept fighting quietly. And oh my God, they know it’s my case? Finnegan, people are going to talk!"

"He didn’t say anything about your relationship, though," River offered, but it only made my head swim harder. freewebnøvel.com

"It doesn’t matter! I’m his assistant, which already raises eyebrows, River. What happens when it looks like he’s throwing his mom in jail for me? What about the divorce with Victoria — you could lose that, Finn!"

He stepped closer and took both my hands in his, but my whole body was trembling.

"I know the risks, baby," he murmured. "And I can handle them. This makes it easier for you, love. The whole world will know about the case now — it cannot be buried. She’s been using the department of justice, but now that it’s public, and in my name, he won’t want to risk the backlash on his career." His thumbs stroked my knuckles gently.

"Oh my God, I’m literally splitting your family apart," I panicked, dragging in air in heavy gulps.

"Hey, hey, breathe, Abigail."

"The divide was already there, girl," River said, moving closer.

"There are those who are family by blood and those who are family by choice," Finnegan said quietly.

"I choose you, Abigail. This isn’t just your fight anymore. I know you’ve carried this alone for so long, but I won’t let you do that anymore. I’m standing with you. Publicly."

My chest tightened. The gesture was so enormous, so selfless, it left me speechless. He had exposed his own mother — the woman who raised him, however terribly — for me.

"You didn’t have to do this," I whispered, my voice thick. "Your company... your family name..."

Finnegan pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly. "You are my family now, baby. You know I love you, and I’ll deal with whatever fallout comes. I’ve got it under control—"

The words slipped out so naturally, so casually, that I almost missed them.

My whole body shut down for a second. My head snapped up, eyes wide. "Wait... hold up, hold the fuck up! You love me?"

The most gorgeous pair of eyes I had ever seen softened, and right there — in front of his daughter, my best friend, and his cousin — he cupped my face and said it so clearly I heard it in another dimension entirely.

"Yeah, I do, Abigail. I love you." ƒrēewebnoѵёl.cσm

Finnegan Wolfe loves me.

Tears pricked my eyes instantly. I laughed shakily, overwhelmed, and threw my arms around his neck, kissing him hard.

When we finally pulled apart, Angel was grinning from ear to ear. "Oh my gosh, where’s the popcorn? I feel like I just watched a telenovela!"

"You shouldn’t be watching telenovelas, you’re too young," Finnegan grumbled.

"Oops," Angel giggled while River groaned.

"Great, I told you not to mention that in front of your father."

"You’re making my daughter watch telenovelas?" Finnegan demanded. Angel skipped over to him, hugging him before wrapping her arms around me while Annette leaned close, whispering in my ear.

"Big major upgrade from Drake the dick, isn’t it?"

"In more ways than one," I laughed, burying my face in Finnegan’s chest. My cheeks were absolutely on fire but I couldn’t stop smiling.

"I love you too," I whispered against his shirt. "So much it scares me sometimes."

He held me tighter, pressing a kiss to the top of my head. "I know I can’t let you go. So you’re stuck with me, Abigail. Completely and irrevocably yours."

Angel clapped her hands excitedly. "Does this mean we can start planning a wedding soon?"

Annette snorted. "Slow down, kid. Your dad still has to actually divorce your mother first."

The words landed like a bucket of cold water. The bubble popped instantly.

River sighed, crossing her arms. "She’s right. Just because we made it public doesn’t mean we’ve won. Gina is as hard as they come. This can only mean all-out war from here on. Have you really thought this through, Finnegan? The consequences for the company, for Angel, for all of us?"

Finnegan kept one arm around me and reached out to pull Angel closer with the other, holding us both against his sides.

"I’ve thought about it every single day," he said. "And I’m ready to give everything I have to protect the people I love."

"Hear, hear," Annette cheered. Then she held up my phone. "It’s been ringing all morning. You’d better think of what to say to your grandparents because they saw the news and they are not happy."

Oh shit. Meemaw was going to skin me alive.
