Chapter 229: THE FACE THAT HAUNTED HER

Abigail

Gina Wolfe stood before me, all wrapped up in a white ball gown with ruffles. Her cold eyes glittered with amusement as they trailed over me.

For a second, neither of us spoke. This was the first time I was facing her since I learned the truth. Since I found out that she and Devin had a hand in my parents’ deaths.

And she had the audacity to look so unbothered. My hands curled into fists at my sides, but I forced my face into a calm mask. I wouldn’t give her the satisfaction of seeing me lose my shit. If she thought getting rid of me was going to be easy, then she was wasting her time.

What on earth was she even doing here? I hadn’t noticed her back at the racetrack. Did she just arrive?

"Well." The old witch tilted her nose up in the air as if I reeked of garlic. "If it isn’t the little Kellerman girl who thinks she’s clever. You must think you’re pretty smart?"

I lifted my chin up as well, glaring at her over the bridge of my nose. "I could say the same thing for you, Mrs Wolfe. I mean, pulling off a murder and managing to keep it under wraps as just a regular accident for fifteen solid years, takes a lot of brain work."

Gina’s lips curved into a cold smile. "Oh darling, don’t be ridiculous. There is no proof. Just because you stumbled upon a few breadcrumbs doesn’t mean you have anything substantial. And I did not kill your parents."

"I’m supposed to believe that?" I hissed, digging my nails into my palm.

The urge to scream at her and grab her by the neck and shake her vigorously surged through me. She didn’t get to make my life miserable and act like she had nine lives.

"Believe whatever you want," she retorted.

"You’re certainly as delusional as Finnegan, thinking you both have the upper hand. Listen to me very clearly, girl, you only found out what I wanted you to find out."

"Those files on Cole’s phone? I made sure they were there. I made sure Gavin delivered that phone to you. What I didn’t expect was that idiot trying to kill you. But that’s all swept under the bridge now, isn’t it? Considering you’re the one who killed my henchman."

My stomach twisted, nausea rose up my throat, and the memories of that night came rushing back.

That only confirmed something I had been suspecting all along. Gavin was really dead. I didn’t feel a hint of remorse, and while that should have terrified me, it didn’t.

He was going to kill Annette. He would have murdered me and my best friend in cold blood with no one to save us but ourselves! I did what I had to do, to protect us. I hated that I had to, but I had to.

Gina chuckled, watching the flurry of emotions crossing my face. Her brows arched up as she spoke. "I wonder what the police would think about that. Murdering a man in an abandoned warehouse."

"Go ahead, tell the police," I shrugged, clamping down the lump forming in my throat.

"You and I both know you won’t. Because if I get arrested for Gavin, they’re going to ask why I killed him, and that would open up a whole new black hole leading into my parents’ death and all your dirty secrets."

Her green eyes flickered warily. Good, she knew I was right. That also meant that Gina’s power over the police and the court wasn’t absolute.

"We aren’t so different after all then," an icy smile tugged at her lips. "You’re angry because what, your pathetic parents lost their lives? I do what I had to do, Kellerman, just like you did to Gavin."

"My parents were innocent!" I cried, stepping closer to her, my chest heaving in anger.

"They did nothing wrong! All they wanted was to quit. Why couldn’t you just let them go? Why did you have to kill them?!"

"I do not appreciate being covered in spit," she scoffed, drawing away from me. My hands shot out to grab her old wrinkly wrist, while I seethed.

"I will expose you. I will, Gina. You and that pathetic son of yours. And I won’t just expose what you did to my parents. I’m going to expose every single lie you’ve told, every person you’ve destroyed, every drop of blood on your hands for your malicious greed!"

Gina’s eyes narrowed, but her smile never wavered. I could have sworn she almost looked impressed.

Was this all a game to her? Was she thinking that it was only a matter of time before she got rid of me too?

"Don’t take it to heart, girl. It’s nothing personal. It’s just business," she stated, wrenching her hand away from mine.

I turned to leave, my heart pounding, when I collided hard with a solid chest behind me.

Strong hands shot out to grab my shoulders. I glanced up and froze as familiar green eyes stared down at me.

They were so similar to Finnegan’s that for a split second my heart leapt. But something was off. These eyes were colder, crinkling at the corners. They sent chills down my spine, especially when the man before me smiled.

"Hmm, big words from a little girl." freewebnovёl.ƈom

It felt like the ground disappeared from under my feet. A memory, the memory of the night my parents died, slammed into me with brutal force.

Rain pelted the ground around us. The car was upside down. Glass everywhere. My parents weren’t moving, the smell of blood in the air, their mangled bloodied bodies were so clear. I couldn’t breathe. I could hear crying, my crying.

A shadow approached, a man crouched down, reaching through the broken window. His hand wrapped around my throat, squeezing.

I kicked and fought, gasping for air. And for the first time in fifteen years, the moonlight caught his face as clear as day.

Cold green eyes gleamed at me and as he choked me, he was smiling.

"Abigail!"

It was Devin. It was definitely him. He killed my parents and had tried to kill me that night. My hands shot out as I tried to push him off through the broken glass, tears streaming down my face.

"ABIGAIL!"

I blinked rapidly, and the black asphalt road leading to the racetrack glared back at me. I was on my hands and knees, and crouched before me was Finnegan, his eyes filled with worry.

Gina and Devin were gone.
