Chapter 44: Daily Quest (2)

He looked up to see several zombies perched on the branches of the trees, staring down at him hungrily. They were using their height advantage against him, and Shinon couldn’t help but chuckle at their strategy.

"What are you doing up there? Planning to drop on me like rotten fruit?" Shinon asked, amused after seeing the zombies dangling from the trees.

The zombies hissed in response, not amused by Shinon’s attempted humour. But instead of throwing rotten eggs at him, they began spitting on him!

"What the-"

Shinon quickly raised his sword to deflect the incoming attack, dodging left and right to avoid the corrosive liquid. He realised he was in a tough spot, fighting against enemies he couldn’t easily reach.

"You do you!"

Shinon jumped back as another volley of acid spit was shot at him. He was preoccupied with the Acid-Spitters, that he paid no attention to the notifications before him.

"You know, I don’t think I’ve ever fought zombies in the trees before. It’s a first for me," Shinon muttered to himself, trying to think of a plan. "In real life or games!"

The zombies continued to spit acid at him, but Shinon managed to dodge most of the attacks. He looked around, searching for a way to bring the fight to his level. free𝑤ebnovel.com

He could’ve quickly brought them down using his Shadow abilities or climbed up the tree himself, but he didn’t, as he wanted to improve his other skills more and didn’t want to use his Shadow abilities until it was a matter of life and death.

’Still, I got to find something!’ Shinon thought to himself. ’Maybe I can cut the trees down! Hopefully, there’s no Treta Ghunberg in this time to protest against me. I could imagine her as one of the Acid-Spitters, to be honest... never mind that... focus on the zombies!’

With that, Shinon took aim for a nearby tree and swung the blade with all his might and... there wasn’t even a scratch on the tree’s surface.

"What the hell’s wrong-"

"Rename yourself to Macrosoft Sword, you useless piece of metal!!!" Shinon screamed at the top of his lungs while running away. "I should’ve brought a machete or two with me- wait, I do have something in my inventory!"

Shinon never got used to using any gun, but it didn’t mean he didn’t know how to use them. It was a simple matter of preference, but in situations like these, being picky would lead to his death.

"Time to go Leon Kennedy up their asses!"

Without warning, one of the zombies let out a high-pitched screech and lunged at him, its jaws snapping shut inches from his face. Shinon sidestepped the attack, barely dodging the attack before pulling the pistol he scavenged from the Raiders.

He aimed and fired, the bullet hitting the zombie in the forehead and blowing its brains out the back of its head. The creature tumbled from the tree and landed on the ground below with a thud.

"Who’s next?" Shinon smirked as he spun around, the pistol still in his hand. "Oh...kay, wrong question."

The zombies were staring at him, enraged that he killed one of their kind. Then, without warning, they again began spitting acid at him while some rushed down to trap him in one place.

Shinon dodged the first attack, rolling to the side as the acidic liquid splashed against the tree behind him. He fired his pistol, the bullet hitting the second zombie in the chest and causing it to fall from its perch.

But there were still more zombies, and they were getting closer. Shinon backed away, his heart racing as he tried to devise a plan.

"Need to get to a higher ground... right now!"

He spotted a nearby tree with low-hanging branches and quickly scrambled up, pulling himself onto the lowest branch. The undead below him let out a howl of rage as they tried to reach him, their acid-spitting aimed at his direction.

"Well, this isn’t ideal," he muttered as he surveyed the situation.

The zombies continued their relentless assault, their acid burning through the tree’s bark. Shinon felt the branch beneath him begin to give way, and he knew he had to act fast.

He jumped from the tree, his feet hitting the ground as he rolled to a stop. The undead closed in, their jaws gaping as they lunged at him. Shinon gritted his teeth, his pistol held tightly in his hand as he prepared for the next wave of attacks.

"Well, this is just great," he muttered to himself. "I thought zombies were supposed to be slow and stupid, not my sword!"

The undead continued to close in, their acidic saliva sizzling against the ground beneath their feet. Shinon remained calm, his eyes trained on his attackers as he waited for the right moment to strike.

"Ok, that’s it!" Shinon said and jumped as high as he could. freeωebnovēl.c૦m

A moment later, a dark aura began circling his fists as he punched the ground with all his might.

Instead of using [Shadow Enhancement] on his pistol, Shinon chose his fist and struck the ground, releasing a deadly shockwave that stunned most of the zombies.

At the same time, Shadowy tentacles popped out of the ground, slicing the zombies and letting them burn from their acid. The few remaining zombies had their heads bashed through by Shinon’s fists... until one zombie remained.

With a scaly body and glowing eyes, the zombie screeched and spat a blob of acid at Shinon. He dodged it effortlessly, the acidic liquid landing on the ground and melting the dirt.

Shinon dashed towards the tree and leapt, grabbing hold of a low branch with one hand and lifting him to the zombie’s level while using the other to punch the zombie in the face.

He failed to end the creature in one strike, but at least both were on the ground now, where Shinon had an advantage.

"You’re a tough one, aren’t you?" Shinon sighed.

The zombie hissed, its eyes flashing with anger as it tried to shake Shinon off and get back on a tree. But Shinon held on tight, his muscles bulging with effort as he landed more punches on the zombie. The zombie screeched and spat acid at him, but he ducked and weaved, dodging the attack.

"Hey, you guys have some real bad aim!" Shinon shouted, grinning as he dodged another acid blob. "You should practice more before trying to hit me!"

The zombie growled; its anger turned to frustration as it failed to land a single hit on Shinon. Shinon was simply too quick for the zombie to do anything, his fists slamming into their bodies with unerring accuracy.

The creature stumbled and fell on its back, the zombie had been down for a moment, but that was enough for Shinon to riddle the creature with bullets.

Shinon chuckled, wiping the sweat from his forehead. "That was fun... and dangerous."

He turned to leave, but then he saw a glint of something shiny on the ground. He walked over and saw that it was a small, glowing crystal that looked just like the one he had found the night before.

"Another one of these?" he muttered, holding it up to the light. "What are you guys doing with these things, anyway? Well, I guess the more of these I have, the easier it will be to craft advanced weapons."

He shrugged, slipping the crystal into his pocket. He would figure it out later. For now, he had to find that Irregular Zombie Nest and clear it out before time ran out.
