Chapter 256: Betrayals All Around (3)
"But now... even you can’t do shit!" Miro laughed before slapping Shinon across the face.
Miro then grabbed Shinon’s hair and stared into his eyes. The rage in Shinon’s eyes was evident, but seeing him like that only brought a sick pleasure to Miro.
"Those eyes... you have no idea how long I have waited for this moment," Miro hissed and became unhinged, licking Shinon’s cheek. "I wonder what kind of zombie would you turn into? A zombie with the power to bend shadows to its will... OH! Just thinking about it gives me chills!"
"Try me, fucker!" Shinon spat on Miro’s face. "You have signed your death certificate. You don’t know it, but you have!"
"Oo, feisty!" Miro clapped his hands together. "You know what? Maybe I should break your spirit first. Let’s turn your beloved into undead first."
Saying so, Miro grabbed Kira’s unconscious face, playing with her.
"GET YOU HANDS OFF HER!"
"I don’t think so~" Miro grinned triumphantly as Shinon struggled against the restraints, his eyes filled with defiance.
The room echoed with Miro’s laughter, convinced he had finally defeated his adversary. Besides, he would get a chance to torment Shinon through his allies. After he was done with Kira, he would bring over more of his friends and turn them into mindless undead soldiers right before him.
Once Shinon was broken beyond repair, Miro would also turn him into an undead. Shinon would become his greatest creation!
Through all this, Caleb was staring at his feet. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t look into Shinon’s eyes. Earlier, he didn’t regret his choices because he knew Shinon wouldn’t be affected by them.
But now, things had gotten personal. Unfortunately, Caleb knew there wasn’t much he could do to save Shinon from the mess he was a part of.
As Miro basked in his perceived victory, a sudden explosion rocked the facility. The lights flickered and went out, plunging the room into darkness. The backup generators kicked in quickly, returning the brightness around the room.
However, in that brief moment of chaos, Shinon seized the opportunity to free himself. He took a dip in his shadow to free himself before releasing Kira. The darkness around the room masked his movements as he slipped out.
When the power returned, Miro scanned the room, only to find himself alone in the brightly lit chamber. The restraints that bound Shinon and Kira were empty, and Caleb was nowhere in sight.
"Damn those bastards!" Miro shouted angrily, knocking over the chair that Shinon was bound to.
Without wasting time, Miro stormed out of the chamber, radio in hand. "Find those bastards! They couldn’t have gone far!"
"Sir! We’re under attack!" a voice crackled through the radio, disregarding Caleb’s orders.
"What?" Caleb responded in disbelief.
The facility’s location was a closely guarded secret, fortified with radars and mines to prevent intruders from getting too close. The idea of an attack seemed implausible, but then Miro’s thoughts turned to the Trader.
She was the only one who could have organised such a force in so little time. But even then, someone had to have given the Trader his location. But Miro didn’t know who it could have been.
Just then, a worrisome realisation struck Miro – had Shinon or his accomplices betrayed the facility’s location to the Trader? The thought gnawed at him, but there was no time for speculation when a battle was unfolding before his dwelling.
"Sir? Should we engage them or escape underground?" the voice inquired.
"We will fight them," Miro declared. freewebnovel.cσ๓
"O-Of course, Sir- There’s something else," A hesitant voice came through the radio, reporting, "We’ve just received a report! Caleb might have been taken hostage by them, Sir."
Miro hadn’t considered this possibility. When he found himself alone in the chamber, he automatically assumed that Caleb had escaped with Shinon. However, that no longer seemed to be the case.
There was a possibility that Shinon was faking it, but after everything the Shadowbearer had learned about his father, Miro didn’t think Shinon would forgive Caleb so easily.
"Kill Caleb," Miro commanded coldly. "He’s a traitor who has outlived his usefulness." freewebnovel.cσ๓
The responder hesitated before reluctantly passing on the order. Without wasting his time on the implications of his decision, Miro headed towards the armoury to prepare for the impending battle.
As alarms blared throughout the facility, Miro assembled his forces. The defenders scrambled to their posts, readying themselves for an unexpected assault.
Miro had armed himself with a sleek rifle and donned a protective suit in the armoury. His face looked contorted with anger and the need to regain control over the facility. His soldiers scanned the corridors as the sounds of distant explosions and gunfire intensified with each step.
Miro could see the chaos unfolding as they approached the facility’s entrance. It was then Miro was hit with another surprise.
All the settlements spread across the neighbouring cities had assembled there, along with the military. To top it all off, Trader and her Relics were also there.
"Damn it!" Miro gritted his teeth.
Miro would have attempted to flee if he had known the situation was this dire. Alternatively, he could have used the Alpha zombies to deal with the Trader and company, but that damned Shinon had killed all of them.
While he was lost in his thoughts, Miro’s radio crackled to life with updates from his subordinates.
"Sir, they’re breaching the main gate!"
"We need reinforcements at Sector B!"
The urgency in their voices mirrored the gravity of the situation.
Having no way out of the mess, Miro ordered his soldiers to press forward and crush the enemies. The soldiers were taken aback but resumed their posts as they feared crossing Miro more than death.
The skirmishes continued throughout the facility, with both sides sustaining heavy losses. Miro’s forces managed to push the attackers back momentarily, regaining control of certain sections. Yet, the relentless assault persisted.
Amid the firefight, Miro received another report. "Sir, we’ve located Caleb. He’s with the enemy forces."
Miro’s jaw clenched as he realised that Caleb had betrayed him. However, there was no room for sentimentality in the heat of battle, and he had bigger concerns to deal with.
"Eliminate that bastard," Miro ordered, his voice unwavering.
The soldiers intensified their efforts in acknowledgement, targeting Caleb amidst the chaos. The facility became a battleground, echoing with the clash of gunfire and the grunts of combatants.
However, Miro noticed something was off. Slowly but surely, all of the camera feeds were being disrupted. However, he heard a voice before Miro could question what was happening.
"Are you looking for me, Miro?" Shinon sneered.
Miro turned around to see all the guards behind him had turned into resins. Shinon had killed them all, and now it was Miro’s turn.
