Chapter 149: Lunarisite Mine (2)

Under the cloak of night, the camp slept peacefully, unaware of Shinon’s quiet departure. His decision weighed heavily on him, but the allure of the mysterious Lunarisite mine was too strong to ignore.

He couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the situation than meets the eye. If the mine were usual, Marcus or the others wouldn’t have tried to hide its existence. Which meant there was something else going on there.

Shinon moved stealthily through the shadows, his steps muffled by the soft muddy floor. Just as he was about to slip away unnoticed, one of the guards patrolling the camp caught a glimpse of movement.

’This fucker is keeping an eye on us?’

Shinon thought about slipping away in the shadows, but he wanted to see what the guard would do after seeing him. After all, since they were on the same side, he shouldn’t be surprised or turn confrontational.

However, if the guard kept an eye on them, he would undoubtedly do something questionable, and Shinon would know the guard couldn’t be trusted.

As Shinon made a bit of noise, the guard’s instincts kicked in, and he approached cautiously, hand resting on the hilt of his machete, a weapon crafted by none other than Shinon himself. It held a unique charm, ensuring its blade would never harm its creator.

The guard, well aware of the danger of firing a gun at night, opted for the trusty machete. He knew that a swift and silent approach would be critical in this situation.

With each step, the guard’s focus sharpened. He moved closer, his grip tightening on the hilt, ready to confront the potential intruder.

"Who goes there?" the guard called out, his voice stern and alert.

Shinon raised his hands in a gesture of peace. "It’s me, Shinon," he replied calmly, his voice carrying through the stillness of the night.

The guard’s eyes widened in recognition, his tense posture relaxing slightly. "Shinon? What are you doing out here at this hour?"

Shinon approached the guard, his expression earnest. "I couldn’t sleep, and I thought I’d take a stroll around the perimeter. Clear my mind, you know?"

"Is that so? Well, you should have informed someone before wandering off." The guard studied Shinon carefully, his suspicion evident. "I’m the night watch, so it’s my duty to ensure the safety of the camp. Including yours."

"I apologise for the oversight. I’ll make sure to notify someone next time. I assure you, my intentions were not malicious." Shinon nodded understandingly, trying to maintain a serious expression.

The guard seemed to relax slightly, though a hint of wariness remained in his eyes. "Alright, just be more careful next time. We can’t afford any surprises, especially now."

"Thank you for your vigilance. I appreciate it." Shinon acknowledged the guard’s concern with a nod of gratitude.

As Shinon turned to leave, he noticed a flicker of curiosity in the guard’s gaze. "By the way, what brings you out here at night? Is there something you’re looking for?"

Shinon hesitated, weighing his words carefully. He couldn’t reveal his true intentions just yet.

"Just needed some fresh air and time to think," he replied vaguely, offering a small smile. "Sometimes, the night can offer clarity."

The guard nodded in understanding, a hint of camaraderie emerging between them.

"I get it. We all have our ways of finding solace. Just remember to stay in my sight and not wander somewhere you shouldn’t."

As Shinon moved closer to the direction he believed the mine to be, he noticed the guard growing increasingly uneasy. It was as if the guard was desperately trying to deter him from exploring that area.

Curiosity piqued, Shinon decided to put his theory to the test. Ignoring the guard’s warnings, he continued, determined to uncover the truth. Just as he expected, the guard’s voice rang out, commanding him to halt.

"Wait, you shouldn’t go that way."

Shinon turned to face the guard, his curiosity leaking from his face.

"Why should I not go that way?" he inquired, his voice laced with genuine interest. freewёbnoνel.com

The guard shifted uncomfortably, realising he had been caught in his own web of deception.

"Well, you see, there have been reports of zombies in that area," he stammered, his eyes avoiding Shinon’s gaze.

A knowing smile played on Shinon’s lips as he leaned closer to the guard.

"Zombies, you say?" he replied with a hint of amusement. "Then it seems all the more reason for us to investigate. As part of the patrolling unit, it is our duty to eliminate any potential threats."

The guard’s eyes widened in surprise, his earlier facade crumbling. He hadn’t expected Shinon to challenge his deceit so confidently. He was left momentarily speechless, searching for a way to salvage the situation.

Unwilling to let the guard off the hook, Shinon pressed further. "Lead the way," he commanded, his voice firm. "If there are zombies in that area, we must take care of them at once."

Caught between a rock and a hard place, the guard realised he had no choice but to take action. With a swift motion, he lunged at Shinon, hoping to subdue him and prevent further exploration of the mine’s vicinity.

Stopping Shinon took precedence, as he could let Marcus deal with the mess later. Moreover, the guard had heard about Shinon’s injuries and expected him to be an easy target. Otherwise, he would have never dared to engage Shinon in combat.

However, Shinon was prepared for such an eventuality. As the guard’s machete swung towards him, he created a Shadow gauntlet to cover his fists while shadowy blades protruded from the knuckles.

"Having mutants influence my childhood was a good idea," Shinon smirked as he readied himself for the ’fight’.

However, despite having a gauntlet, Shinon did nothing to block the guard’s attack.

The guard thought he had won, but a moment later, his expression turned sour when he realised that the machete didn’t even break through Shinon’s skin. It almost felt like the metal blade turned into rubber as soon as it touched Shinon’s skin.

"Don’t worry," Shinon smirked before grabbing the guard’s collar. "This rubber won’t break."
