Chapter 147: Future Planning (3)

Marcus paced back and forth in the dimly lit room, frustration etched on his face. Lova stood before him, her arms crossed defiantly.

It was time for the inevitable interrogation about their encounter with the Queen, and Marcus had a burning desire to uncover every detail, no matter the cost.

Why? Because Marcus firmly believed that there was no way Shinon could have defeated someone as formidable as the Queen on his own. In Marcus’s eyes, Shinon simply wasn’t strong enough to achieve such a feat.

However, the possibility that Shinon might have hidden his true strength gnawed at Marcus’s mind, threatening to unleash a torrent of frustration. Marcus despised uncertainty above all else, and the idea of not knowing the full extent of someone’s abilities infuriated him.

Thus, he found himself relentlessly interrogating Lova, determined to make her reveal the truth about their encounter with the insectoids and how they managed to halt the relentless horde seemingly on their own.

Marcus prodded and questioned, trying to pry every ounce of information from Lova, his relentless pursuit of the truth blurring the lines between his usual sense of authority and aggression.

"Enough with the evasive answers, Lova!" Marcus snapped, his voice dripping with impatience. "I know you were conscious during the fight. Now, tell me what happened!"

Lova’s expression remained steadfast, her eyes narrowing in determination. "I’ve already told you, Marcus. I don’t remember anything after the Queen’s attack. My memory goes blank, and the only thing I know is being woken up to find myself injured and Shinon unconscious."

Marcus scoffed, dismissing her explanation as mere deception. He had always regarded Lova as a docile and harmless tool, ready to do his bidding whenever he liked, in whatever way he pleased.

However, ever since Lova returned with Shinon, he could sense something was off with her and was worried that something was happening between them.

"You expect me to believe that?" Marcus retorted, his voice laced with cynicism. "You conveniently forget the most crucial part of the battle? It’s quite convenient, isn’t it?"

Lova’s patience began to waver, her usually composed demeanour reserved for Marcus, giving way to a flash of anger. "I’m telling you the truth, Marcus. I have no reason to lie."

But Marcus was not one to easily back down. He believed there was more to Lova’s story and was determined to uncover the truth, regardless of the consequences.

Without warning, Marcus lunged forward, grabbing Lova’s arm tightly, his grip bordering on aggressive. Lova winced, her eyes flashing with a mixture of pain and defiance.

"You will tell me what you know," Marcus growled, his voice dripping with menace. "I won’t tolerate any more of your lies and deceit."

"Release me, Marcus! This behaviour is unacceptable. You have no right to treat me like this." Lova’s face flushed with anger, her voice cutting through the tense atmosphere like a blade. "I said, let me go, you freak!"

But Marcus remained unyielding, his grip tightening on her arm. "I’ll do whatever it takes to get the truth out of you, Lova. Even if it means crossing a few boundaries."

He pulled her closer, and his other hand grabbed her by the chin, ensuring she looked him straight in the eyes.

It wasn’t the first time Marcus was forcing someone like that. Since Selena left him, he had been taking his anger out on a few people from the settlement, but none ever rose against him.

It only fueled Marcus’s injured ego as he thought he could do whatever he liked without any consequences. He thought it would be the same as he stared into Lova’s eyes.

A flicker of fear danced in Lova’s eyes, but it was quickly replaced by a resolute determination.

She had tolerated Marcus’s questionable actions for far too long, always keeping her composure and silently enduring. But this time, she had reached her limit.

With a sudden burst of strength, Lova wrenched her arm free from Marcus’s grasp and pushed him back with her ability, her voice laced with an icy warning.

"I suggest you tread carefully, Marcus. There are limits to what even I can tolerate. If you continue down this path, you’ll find yourself facing consequences you’re not prepared for."

Marcus was taken aback by Lova’s newfound defiance. He had always regarded her as subservient, easily controlled by his authoritative demeanour. But now, she stood before him, her gaze unwavering and her tone firm.

"You know what, Marcus? I’m done with this," Lova declared, her voice laced with newfound confidence. "I refuse to be treated like a pawn in your power games."

Marcus’s eyes widened in surprise, his usual air of authority momentarily faltering. He had never seen Lova so assertive, which caught him off guard.

Lova took a step closer to Marcus, her gaze piercing through his facade. "You claim to be a leader, but all I see is someone desperate for control. You’re so consumed by your need for certainty that you’re willing to trample over anyone who gets in your way."

A flicker of anger flashed across Marcus’s face, but Lova pressed on, her voice unwavering.

"You want to know the truth about our encounter with the Queen? Well, here it is: I don’t remember everything that happened because I got knocked out. Simple as that. It is up to you whether you believe it or not."

Marcus clenched his fists, his pride wounded by Lova’s words. He had never been challenged in this manner before and struggled to find a response.

"And you know what else, Marcus?" Lova continued, her tone biting. "Despite his flaws, Shinon is a far better partner than you. He may be unpredictable and stubborn, but at least he respects the boundaries of others. He doesn’t try to force everyone into his narrow vision of control."

Anger and embarrassment washed over Marcus, his usual composed demeanour crumbling under Lova’s harsh words. He had prided himself on his abilities and leadership, but Lova’s comparison to Shinon struck a nerve.

"Lova, I..." Marcus began, his voice tinged with a hint of vulnerability, but Lova cut him off, her eyes blazing with determination.

"No, Marcus. Save your apologies," Lova interjected, her voice firm. "Words mean nothing if you don’t learn from your actions. If you truly want to be a leader, start by respecting the choices and boundaries of your allies. Build trust instead of tearing it down."

With that, Lova turned on her heel and stormed out of the room, leaving Marcus stunned. He watched her retreating figure, a mix of emotions swirling within him—regret, anger, and, more importantly... sadness.

Marcus paced back and forth in the room, his mind clouded with frustration and resentment. Lova’s words had struck a nerve, and he found himself searching for a scapegoat to blame for his current predicament.

"It’s all because of Shinon," Marcus muttered, his voice filled with bitterness. "He’s the source of all our problems." freewebnoveℓ.com

In Marcus’s eyes, Shinon had become the embodiment of everything he despised—unpredictable, defiant, and a constant challenge to his authority.

He saw Shinon as the root cause of the discord within the settlement, a thorn in his side that needed to be removed.

The memories of their previous clashes flooded Marcus’s mind. He had successfully driven Shinon out once before, believing that it would solve all their problems. But this time, it wouldn’t be as easy.

The first time Marcus had driven Shinon out, it had been relatively easy. Few people in the settlement knew Shinon back then, and Marcus had managed to paint him as a troublemaker, giving him a seemingly valid reason for exile.

But now, the situation was vastly different. Shinon had returned as a hero, celebrated for his contributions and bravery. His deeds had won the respect and admiration of many settlers, not to mention the support of key figures like Lova and Nova.

Asking him to leave again would undoubtedly trigger a backlash from the settlers and other Phoenixes who recognised his value.

As much as Marcus loathed to admit it, the settlement’s success was now intricately tied to Shinon’s skills and creations. The alliance with the military hinged on Shinon’s abilities, making him indispensable to their cause.

Frustration gnawed at Marcus as he grappled with the reality of the situation. He couldn’t simply remove Shinon from the equation without consequences for the settlement’s welfare and his partnership with the military.

Marcus knew he needed a different approach, one that allowed him to assert authority while also keeping Shinon in the settlement. He couldn’t afford to alienate the talented inventor or jeopardise the alliance they had worked so hard to secure.

Marcus contemplated his next move, his mind swirling with thoughts of undermining Shinon’s standing in the settlement. He knew that a direct confrontation would be risky, as Shinon had garnered the support and admiration of many settlers.

But if he could manipulate circumstances to force Shinon into making a colossal mistake, it could be the perfect opportunity to tarnish his image.

With a sinister smile on his lips, Marcus envisioned a scenario where the safety of the entire settlement hung in the balance. He plotted a scheme that would subtly lead Shinon down a treacherous path, ultimately resulting in grave consequences.

If Shinon were to falter and make a grave error, Marcus would seize the moment to expose his misstep and hold him accountable.

But Marcus knew that orchestrating such a scheme wouldn’t be easy. He would have to be cunning and patient, meticulously laying the groundwork to ensure the desired outcome.

He would need to manipulate the situation in a way that made it appear as though Shinon’s actions were solely responsible for the impending disaster.

Marcus understood the risks involved in his plan. If he miscalculated or underestimated Shinon’s resourcefulness, it could backfire, causing irreparable damage to the settlement and his own position within it.

But he was willing to take that chance, driven by his deep-rooted resentment towards Shinon and a desire to reclaim the authority he believed was rightfully his.

"This is going to be a lot of fun..."
