Chapter 125: An Infestation Issue (2)
Shinon raised his hand with an expressionless face, heeding Selena’s call for help. All eyes turned to him, curiosity and anticipation written on their faces.
He stepped forward, standing beside Selena, and addressed the gathered fighters with a calm yet authoritative voice.
"Thank you, Selena, for your insightful words," Shinon began, nodding to her with appreciation. "it is like you said. We must acknowledge and approach the challenges ahead with a well-thought-out plan."
Before continuing, he surveyed the crowd, ensuring he had their undivided attention.
"The exoskeleton of the insectoids has proven to be a formidable defence, making it difficult to inflict any significant damage. Most of you had a firsthand experience with it."
Shinon’s words resonated with the fighters, their expressions slowly reflecting the lies they thought could save them. But both Selena’s and his words combined knocked some sense into them.
"Although I don’t know much about the insectoids, I do know a few things about insects," Shinon remarked, and Selena immediately knew what he was hinting at. "Considering the insectoids have evolved from insects, it’s safe to say they might also share their weaknesses."
Shinon took a moment to gather his thoughts before continuing. "Insects, particularly the ones with exoskeletons, are vulnerable to certain substances that can interfere with their respiratory systems. It might be worth considering if we can find a similar weakness in the insectoids."
Listening to him, Lova scoffed. "So? You want us to spray them with insecticides or something?"
A few people chuckled along, and surprisingly Shinon was one of them until he said, "If your mouth didn’t work on them, I’m not sure if even the most potent insecticides would help."
Listening to it pissed Lova off to no extent. Her face turned red as it looked like she was about to use her powers to choke Shinon and make him beg for mercy, but one look from Nova and the intentions evaporated faster than a drop of water in a desert.
Once things calmed down a bit, people expected Shinon to continue with his plan. But he remained quiet. It wasn’t his stage to shine, but Selena’s, and he had given her enough clues on what to do next.
Shinon looked at her and knew her brain was in overdrive, thinking of a plan. However, she was taking longer than Shinon expected, and he was about to give her another clue when she finally spoke up.
"If we could gather insectoid samples, we could conduct experiments in a controlled environment," She said, thinking of materials they could use. "We could test different substances and observe their effects on the creatures, narrowing down their weaknesses."
Shinon nodded, impressed by Selena’s insight. "Exactly. With a systematic approach and the right resources, we can create specialised weapons or defences tailored to exploit insectoids’ vulnerabilities. I know it won’t be easy, but it’s better than blindly rushing to death, as most of you suggested."
However, the plan had a problem, which Sable wasted no time pointing out.
"Fine. I’ll admit, there might be something to your idea. But how do we gather the samples? The insectoids aren’t exactly handing them out."
It was at that moment, Shinon’s eyes sparkled with mischief. His plan was in place, and now all he needed to do was to give a particular individual a final push. freёwebnovel.com
"Well, Sable, you raise a valid point," Shinon responded, his voice laced with ill intentions. "While it’s true that the insectoids won’t simply hand over their samples, we have a resourceful individual capable of acquiring what we need."
His gaze shifted toward Lova, who had successfully taken down one of the insectoids.
There was a glimmer of fake admiration in Shinon’s eyes as he continued, "Lova, you’ve proven your abilities in eliminating one of these creatures. I believe you should take charge of the sample collection, and more of us will join you in time as we learn more about the creatures."
Lova started to voice her opinion, but Marcus intervened, raising a hand to silence her. He looked at Shinon with a contemplative expression before speaking.
"Shinon makes a valid point. You have firsthand experience dealing with insectoids, and your expertise will be invaluable in gathering the samples. However, considering the risks involved, it would be wise for Shinon to accompany you since it is his idea."
It was then Sable joined in by saying, "Given that Shinon has also managed to dismember one of the insectoids, it would be better for him to accompany Lova on this task. I believe they can ensure the safe and efficient collection of the necessary samples together."
Marcus glanced at Shinon. Knowing their history of disagreements, he had expected Shinon to decline the offer. However, Shinon surprised him by accepting the proposition without hesitation.
Shinon’s voice rang out confidently, breaking the silence in the room. "Very well, Marcus. I accept the responsibility of aiding Lova in collecting the samples. Together, we will secure the necessary materials for our plan... with your blessings, haha."
Marcus, Sable, and Lova exchanged glances, their surprise and shock evident on their faces. They had expected Shinon to decline the offer, given his notorious history of resistance and clashes with Marcus.
The silence that followed was filled with a mix of disbelief and anticipation. The gathered fighters exchanged bewildered looks, their minds struggling to comprehend this unexpected turn of events.
Marcus was momentarily taken aback, his eyes narrowing as he studied Shinon’s face, searching for any signs of deception or ulterior motives.
"Shinon," Marcus finally spoke, his voice laced with curiosity and caution, "Are you sure about this? You know the risks involved."
A rare glimmer of seriousness flickered in Shinon’s eyes as he met Marcus’s gaze. His mischievous demeanour had momentarily faded, replaced by a determined resolve that demanded attention.
"I’m well aware of the risks, Marcus," Shinon replied, his voice steady and unwavering. "But if we want to gather the necessary samples and take down these insectoids, it’s a risk worth taking. Together, Lova and I can handle it."
Sable, who had been observing the exchange with surprise and suspicion, spoke up. "But Shinon, you’ve always been an independent fighter. Are you willing to work as part of a team?"
A wry smile played on Shinon’s lips as he considered Sable’s question. His gaze shifted to Lova, acknowledging her capabilities and the importance of unity in this endeavour.
"You’re right, Sable," Shinon replied, his voice tinged with a newfound sincerity. "I’ve always been a lone wolf, but this threat requires us to unite. Besides, Lova here has proven herself, and it’s about time I put my trust in others... or is it that you don’t want me to trust you?"
"I-It isn’t anything like that-" Sable fumbled. However, she couldn’t say she wasn’t worried about Shinon’s sudden change.
"Then it is settled; we’ll leave tomorrow morning," Shinon said, leaving the stage while everyone was confused about what was happening inside his head.
As the meeting ended and the crowd began to disperse, Marcus approached Lova with a serious expression. He subtly gestured for her to step aside, away from the prying ears of the others. Sensing the moment’s gravity, Lova followed him to a quieter corner of the square.
Once they were a safe distance away, Marcus spoke in a hushed tone, his eyes fixed on Lova. "Lova, I need you to be careful when you’re out there collecting the samples with Shinon. I don’t fully trust him, and I want you to prioritise your safety above all else."
Lova nodded, understanding the weight of Marcus’s concern. She appreciated his vigilance and his commitment to the safety of their team.
"I understand, Marcus," she replied softly. "I’ll be cautious and won’t let my guard down."
Marcus’s gaze softened as worry and protectiveness shone through. "Good. Shinon is unpredictable, and I’m sure he has his own agenda. Keep an eye on him and trust your instincts. If anything feels off, don’t hesitate to end him immediately; I’ll handle the aftermath."
Lova nodded again, "As much as I don’t want to work with him, Shinon didn’t give a choice because he pulled the move right in front of so many people. Imagine being able to force someone like me to do charity for these... weaklings. Ugh!"
"I know... the bastard is more cunning than I had assumed." Marcus placed a hand on Lova’s shoulder, a silent reassurance passing between them. "I know you’re strong enough, Lova. Just... be careful and remember that we’re here to support you."
With a final wordless exchange, Marcus stepped back, his gaze lingering on Lova for a moment longer before he turned and walked away. Lova stood there, the weight of his caution looming over her head.
However, instead of being worried, Lova smiled. One line stuck with her out of everything Marcus had said to her. Get rid of Shinon if she had to...
One could tell she had been waiting for an opportunity like this and wasn’t sure if Marcus intentionally asked Shinon to accompany her, knowing what she could do to him.
"Guess it’s going to be a great day tomorrow." Lova smiled and walked away to prepare for their hunt.
