Chapter 103: Defending The Settlement (4)
"Shinon! Take care of the last Exploder. Then we’ll charge and take them down!" Marcus’s voice pierced through the chaos, his determination fueling his words as he rallied the guards to open fire on the relentless horde.
Shinon gritted his teeth, his gaze locked on the remaining Exploder. It stood defiantly, its grotesque form surrounded by a swarm of zombies that had caught wind of their plan.
They pushed the Exploder toward the last line of defence, making it increasingly challenging for Shinon to find a clear shot.
"Easier said than done..." Shinon muttered under his breath, frustration mingling with determination in his voice.
However, the distance between the remaining Exploder and their current position didn’t guarantee safety. Shinon knew that the vile creature could still launch a devastating attack by utilising the volatile gas stored within its bloated belly.
If anyone ventured outside the safety of the settlement’s walls, they would be at risk of a sudden and explosive assault. It was precisely why Marcus urgently called for Shinon to eliminate the threat posed by the Exploder.
As if the situation wasn’t challenging enough, a lone screamer added to Shinon’s woes. It let out ear-piercing shrieks whenever he aimed, successfully distracting him and rallying more zombies to join the fray.
The bastard was cunning, using its ability to disrupt Shinon’s concentration and turn the tide in favour of the undead.
Shinon knew that time was running out, that they had to eliminate the last Exploder to proceed with their charge.
If they failed to eliminate the Exploder swiftly, the relentless horde would soon shift its attention to the vulnerable sides of the settlement, where defences were not as fortified as the well-guarded entrance.
As Shinon released the bolt, his anticipation turned to disbelief as the Exploder cunningly used a Walker as a shield, deflecting the fiery projectile and saving itself from certain death. Frustration welled up within Shinon, fueling his determination to put an end to this relentless threat.
Enough was enough. If the Exploder wouldn’t come to him, then he would take the fight to it. Determination etched across his face, Shinon turned to Marcus, his voice laced with unwavering resolve.
"Marcus, keep an eye out for my signal!" he shouted, his words carrying over the cacophony of gunshots and undead moans.
Confusion and concern flashed across Marcus’s face as he shouted back, "Where the hell do you think you’re going?"
But it was too late. Shinon was already gone, disappearing from sight in a daring leap off the watchtower. His form descended into the sea of ravenous zombies below, a single figure against the tide of undead.
"What the hell?" Lova muttered in surprise as she witnessed Shinon’s audacious manoeuvre, simultaneously crushing the undead beneath her psychic abilities.
The hungry horde turned their attention to Shinon, their eyes fixated on their potential prey. But just as their outstretched hands were about to reach him, something inexplicable happened.
Shinon seemed to phase through the ground; his descent abruptly halted as he vanished from their grasp, leaving the zombies bewildered and disoriented.
A momentary pause filled the air as the undead glanced around, confusion evident in their vacant eyes. Their anticipated feast had vanished before their eyes, swallowed by a mysterious force. Their hunger, momentarily forgotten, gave way to a collective sense of bewilderment.
Unbeknownst to the undead, Shinon, with a swift and calculated move, had merged with his own shadow, slipping past the horde undetected and closing the distance between himself and the cunning Exploder.
Shinon’s decision to engage the deadly creature in close combat may have seemed reckless to onlookers, but he knew the dire circumstances left him with limited options. Desperation fueled his determination, pushing him to face the imminent danger head-on.
As he emerged from the shadowy depths, his presence was masked by the darkness surrounding him. The Exploder, preoccupied with the chaos of the ongoing battle, remained oblivious to the looming threat drawing near.
As the darkness receded, Shinon emerged from the shadows that had concealed him. The Exploder, caught off guard by his sudden appearance, turned its decaying gaze towards him. With a swift and decisive motion, Shinon launched himself into action.
His weapon, gleaming in the pale light, sliced through the air with a resolute purpose. He closed the distance between himself and the monstrous creature, his movements a blur of speed and precision. The Exploder, sluggish in comparison, struggled to react in time.
Shinon’s strikes were calculated and efficient, targeting the weak spots of the creature’s deteriorating form. With each blow, a spray of foul-smelling ichor erupted from the wound, staining the air with its putrid scent. He danced around the hulking mass, evading its clumsy attempts to strike back.
With a series of quick movements, Shinon darted in and out of the Exploder’s attack range, delivering swift and relentless attacks. He utilised his agility and combat prowess, exploiting the creature’s vulnerabilities to his advantage.
The sound of metal meeting rotting flesh echoed through the air, accompanied by grunts of exertion and the occasional snarl of defiance. freewebnoveℓ.com
The Exploder, enraged by the audacity of this human who dared to challenge its dominance, unleashed a flurry of wild swings.
But Shinon had grown a lot since his last encounter with an Exploder and, using his honed reflexes evaded each attack with uncanny precision. He ducked, twisted, and sidestepped, narrowly escaping the reach of the creature’s deadly claws.
However, it was only a matter of time before other zombies noticed him and rushed to protect the Exploder. A chorus of moans filled the air as they closed in on Shinon, their rotting hands reaching out in a futile attempt to grasp him.
"Too slow," Shinon mumbled as a group of Irregular Sprinters raced towards him.
In one fluid motion, he spun, his blade cutting through the air in a wide arc. The sword sliced through the nearest zombies, severing limbs and halting their advance. The sickening thud of decapitated heads hitting the ground echoed through the chaos. But it was just the beginning.
