Chapter 354: Inter-Academy Tournament (VI)
The group continued down the stairs.
The deeper they went, the cooler the air grew, with the faint glow from the old runes on the walls proving enough light just to barely see anything.
Adrian kept his glowing orb raised high, leading the way while Maelis stayed close, her eyes scanning every shadow.
"Keep close," Adrian said quietly.
"We don’t know what’s down here. Stay alert."
Ronan, still buzzing with excitement, whispered loudly, "This feels like a real adventure! I bet there’s a big treasure room at the end. Or maybe a boss monster guarding it! I’m ready for anything!"
Selina walked near the middle, her eyes studying the carvings as they passed.
"These runes are really old. This place must have been sealed for at least... thousands of years. We really need to be careful! Ancient ruins like this often have deadly traps!"
"I’ll keep an eye on the rear. Just in case." Claire nodded, staying close to the group.
They reached the bottom of the stairs and stepped into a huge corridor.
The space opened up dramatically, but the ceiling was strangely high, the walls stretched far into the distance, and the floor was made of smooth, polished stone.
But there was nothing there. No statues, no chests, or glowing artifacts. Just an empty, silent corridor stretching ahead into darkness.
The group stopped instantly.
Everyone turned suspicious at the same time.
Adrian raised his hand, signaling everyone to halt.
"This doesn’t feel right," he said quietly. "A corridor this big and completely empty? It’s too clean. Stay sharp as there might be some traps."
Maelis narrowed her eyes, looking down the long hallway.
"Yeah... it’s too quiet indeed."
Ronan scratched his head, looking around with a nervous grin.
"Or maybe it’s just a really boring hallway? Like the builders ran out of ideas. ’Hey, let’s make a long empty tunnel!’"
Selene shook her head, her voice soft but serious.
"I don’t like it. My senses are picking up something faint... like hidden energy. We should move slowly."
Claire gripped her weapon a little tighter.
"I’ll watch our backs. Let’s not rush."
"This place feels wrong," Katia, who was usually quiet, said softly.
"The energy here is twisted. Like something old and angry is sleeping. I can try to place a detection curse if you want, Adrian. It might warn us before a trap triggers."
Adrian nodded without turning around, his eyes still scanning the floor ahead.
"Good idea, Katia. Do it quietly. We don’t want to wake anything up."
Katia raised her hand and whispered a few words under her breath. A faint purple mist appeared around the group for a second before fading away. She nodded to herself.
"It’s active. If anything dangerous moves, we’ll know."
Maelis glanced back at her with a small smile.
"Thanks, Katia. You’re always reliable with that stuff."
Ronan, still trying to keep the mood light, whispered loudly, "This is like one of those old adventure stories! Empty hallway, creepy vibes, hidden traps... I bet there’s a giant treasure at the end guarded by a big monster. I’ll be the distraction while you guys grab the loot!"
Selene smiled a little at his words, but her voice stayed serious.
"Let’s hope it’s not a monster. My senses are picking up water nearby. There might be an underground river or something."
Selina walked close to her, keeping her eyes on the walls.
"If there’s water, we should be careful. Some ruins flood sections to trap intruders."
They pressed on for a while, with Katia’s detection curse humming faintly around them, a subtle purple glow that only she could see clearly.
"Still nothing," she murmured.
"But the energy is getting stronger. There’s something ahead..."
They continued for several more minutes, the corridor stretching endlessly. Then, without warning, the floor beneath the middle of the group shifted.
Click.
A hidden pressure plate triggered.
The ground rumbled violently.
Sections of the floor gave way, collapsing into deep pits filled with churning, dark water.
Three students near the center screamed as they fell, their bodies disappearing into the flood below.
The elimination magic activated instantly, and they were teleported out of the island, meaning that their participation in the challenge ended.
"Trap!" Adrian shouted, his voice sharp.
"Move!"
The group reacted quickly.
Maelis leaped forward with graceful speed, grabbing one of the falling students by the arm and pulling her to safety just in time.
Selene summoned a wave of water mana to create a temporary bridge, helping the others cross the collapsing section.
Selina and Claire moved to the sides, pulling more students away from the danger zone.
The corridor shook as more sections of the floor crumbled, the sound of rushing water growing louder.
The trap had activated a hidden mechanism, and because of that, the entire middle section was flooding rapidly, the water rising fast.
"Get to the walls!" Adrian ordered, his tone commanding.
"Stay together!"
The group pressed against the sides of the corridor, avoiding the collapsing center.
Two more students were caught by the rising water and eliminated in flashes of light before they could be saved.
The rest managed to reach safety, breathing hard as they watched the corridor transform into a deadly waterway.
Maelis wiped sweat from her brow, her expression tense.
"That was close. The ruin is fighting back."
The group had barely taken a few more steps when Ronan, still trying to stay useful, stepped forward to check a suspicious tile on the floor.
"Hey, this one looks different! Maybe it’s a switch or something—"
Click.
The tile sank under his foot.
The corridor rumbled again.
This time, the walls on both sides slid open, revealing hidden compartments.
Fwip!
Dozens of razor-sharp stone spikes shot out from the walls at high speed, filling the narrow space with deadly projectiles.
"Trap!" Adrian shouted.
The group reacted instantly, but the spikes were too fast.
Two students near the front were hit directly, their bodies pierced before the elimination magic could even activate.
They vanished in bright flashes of light, eliminated from the challenge.
Another student was grazed on the arm, but the wound was deep enough to force him to fall back, clutching the injury as blood soaked his uniform.
Maelis moved like lightning, pulling one of the girls out of the way just in time.
Selene summoned a wall of water to block some of the spikes, while Selina and Claire used their weapons to deflect others.
"Everyone down!" Adrian yelled, dropping to the floor as more spikes flew overhead.
Ronan, who had triggered the trap, dove forward with a yelp, narrowly avoiding a spike that embedded itself in the wall where his head had been a second earlier.
The barrage lasted only a few seconds, but the damage was done.
Three students were eliminated, and two more were injured, forcing the group to stop and tend to them with their limited healing potions.
Maelis helped one of the injured girls sit up, her face grim.
"Ronan, you idiot," she muttered, though there was no real anger in her voice, just pure frustration.
"Next time, don’t touch anything."
Ronan sat on the floor, looking sheepish as he rubbed his head.
"Sorry... I thought it was a good idea..."
The group took a moment to catch their breath after the spike trap.
The two injured students were given healing potions, and their wounds closed up quickly, though they still looked shaken.
Adrian checked on everyone before nodding.
After several minutes of careful exploration, the corridor opened into a larger chamber.
The walls here were covered in more intricate carvings: pictures of ancient warriors wearing glowing armor and wielding powerful weapons.
In the center of the room, floating gently above a stone pedestal, were a pair of gauntlets. freёweɓnovel.com
They looked ancient but well-preserved, made of dark metal with faint blue runes running along the knuckles and wrists.
The gauntlets hovered in the air, giving off a soft, pulsing light. They seemed to call out to anyone who looked at them, promising strength and power.
Selina’s eyes widened as she studied them.
"Those are flying gauntlets," she said, her voice filled with excitement.
"I’ve read about them in old texts. They can let the wearer fly for short periods and boost their strength in combat. They’re rare and really valuable."
Maelis stepped closer, her eyes sparkling with interest.
"They look powerful. We should take them. They could help us a lot in the challenge."
Adrian raised his hand, stopping everyone from rushing forward.
"Careful. It could be another trap. Let’s check the area first."
The group spread out slowly, scanning the chamber for any hidden mechanisms or pressure plates. Ronan, trying to be useful, poked at the floor with a stick from his pack.
"Looks safe over here!" he called out.
Katia used her curse magic again, the faint purple mist spreading across the room.
"No immediate traps," she said. "But the gauntlets themselves have strong energy. They might be guarded by something we can’t see yet."
After a few minutes of careful checking, Adrian nodded.
"Alright. Maelis, you’re the fastest. Grab them carefully. Everyone else, stay ready."
Maelis moved forward slowly, her hand reaching out toward the floating gauntlets.
