Chapter 66: Strangers (2)

Monica took a deep breath before she entered Ian’s office. She knew that he would be upset with her for coming to him after the warning he had given her and then her father, but she needed answers. Seeing that he had called her here, he couldn’t be angry with her anymore.

They just needed to talk and then it would all go back to normal.

Monica opened the door and smiled to greet Ian warmly so they could speak without fighting. She found him facing his desk so his back was turned to her.

Monica closed the door so they wouldn’t be disturbed by anyone. Disturbed by someone like Owen who tried to send her away from Ian or Scarlet who was trying to force her way where she didn’t belong.

"I came to apologise for the way I have been acting towards you. My father said that I should do it. I didn’t think I would be receiving a few bruises on my arm for wanting to apologise. Ian," Monica called as his silence was odd.

If Ian didn’t want her here, he would have snapped by now. freeweɓnovēl.coɱ

"Did something happen to you? Did someone trouble you? Was it your father?" Monica questioned.

"Your life hasn’t been quiet since you allowed that woman to come here. Now I am hearing lies that you went to the garden party with her. The very party that I told you that I would have loved to join you to attend. I could have been there to help when you see your family again. What does she have other than money that I do not?" Monica asked, still puzzled as to why Scarlet was picked.

Monica was in Ian’s life first and helped him where she could. It was unfair for Scarlet to just show up and have Ian when someone was waiting for him.

Since her father had helped Ian in the past, Monica found it to be some sort of destiny that she and Ian were to end up together.

"I’ve warned you to not show up before me again. I’ve even spoken to your father as a last warning that the next time you show, I will get rid of you. Do you not value your life?" Ian asked, turning around to face Monica.

He placed a gun he kept in a drawer to be in view for Monica to see. It would be this very gun that would silence her obsession.

Ian’s earlier anger from the ’gift’ was gone and replaced with anger from Monica disturbing his life.

"My father told me about what you said. That’s why I came here to apologise and make everything go back to normal again. We’ll be seeing each other often since you are still close to my father," Monica said, failing to see how they would avoid each other. ƒгeewёbnovel.com

Ian tapped his fingers on the desk behind him. He wondered what kind of talk her father had with her that she failed to notice the danger. Monica knew nothing about him. She only knew him for a few months from when he returned to set up his business and home.

Monica knew of his past from her father only because he had shared a bit about his family when her father had offered him a ride out of Lockwood and then he sent letters over the years.

"All kinds of things are being said about you Ian," Monica said, closing the space between them as she missed being near him. "I warned you not to get involved with that woman. She’s-"

"W-Wait!" Monica stuttered, thrown off by Ian’s hand grabbing her dress to pull her forward.

Ian was aiming for her throat at first but since it was a busy time for his business and it was daytime, he couldn’t do that now. "You’ve used it in your favour long enough that I owed your father. Truly, I didn’t owe him that much to put up with you. The debts have been cleared so now you’re just an annoying fool disturbing me."

"Get it through your head that I am not yours. I will treat you no differently than any other stranger bothering me. You should have listened to your father," said Ian.

Monica was puzzled as this wasn’t the Ian that she knew and loved. He was starting to scare her with how he was acting. "This isn’t like you."

"You don’t know me," Ian answered, wishing it would register in her head. "I am close to your father. You are a mere headache that comes with being near him. Keeping a friendship with him is not worth putting up with you. If you show up before me again, it will be the last time you use your feet."

"And please, save your teeth by stop speaking on Scarlet because you are jealous. You won’t be fond of getting to know me if you come here again. Go," Ian released Monica’s dress with a shove.

It wasn’t enough to make her stumble but Monica felt like he had hurt her. He had never threatened her so. Monica tried to believe that it was a silly joke Ian was playing on her but he wasn’t angry like usual so she couldn’t bring herself to believe it.

Ian had threatened to hurt her feet and he had pulled her like she was no one important to him.

Monica took a step back. How did it come to this? It was fine not long ago. She would come to visit him and spend many hours with him. Though she annoyed him, it had never come this far before.

Everything changed when Scarlet showed up that day and made Ian pour tea for her.

Monica knew how to make it all go back to normal.

"Monica, if you show up before Scarlet, I am going to get rid of you. Your father has already accepted your fate if you don’t listen so don’t think no harm will come to you. You don’t know me. Stop assuming you do," Ian advised Monica.

Even if she didn’t know everything about him, Monica knew that she knew more about him than Scarlet did. She could care for him better than Scarlet ever could. Wasn’t Ian listening to what was being said about Scarlet with how she had been with her husband? Scarlet didn’t know how to care for anyone.

"You’ll regret this. There will never be anyone to love you like I do. After all my father did for you, this is how you treat his daughter? Fine, I won’t come here again, but you’ll beg me to return," Monica confidently spoke. She was one of the few people he could trust in this town.

Ian didn’t care for what she believed. He only wanted her to keep to her word that she wouldn’t be back here. He wished that it was night rather than day to deal with her once and for all, but luck wasn’t on his side.

"Remember to stay away from Scarlet or I will come for you. Whatever you try to do concerning her, I will give it back to you tenfold," Ian warned.

Monica turned around and marched to the door. There was still a little hope left that he would stop her and apologise but he didn’t. If she couldn’t have him, the person to get him could never be Scarlet.
