Chapter 40: A fool in love (1)
"My family uses one of the best doctors in town. Why wouldn’t you want to use him instead of this doctor I have never heard of? My child should have the best care," Jack said, trying once more to get Beth to change her mind.
What did this doctor he never heard of knew of caring for a pregnant woman?
"Jack, I told you that he saved me in the past and whenever I became pregnant, he was always my first choice. He is special to me unlike your doctor you use and don’t speak to when you are well. I cannot turn my back on Chester now. Please understand," Beth said, touching Jack’s face to convince him.
Jack felt as though he was between a rock and a hard place as he didn’t want just any doctor taking care of Beth. She was finally letting a doctor take a look at her but it wasn’t the family doctor. He respected her loyalty to those she knew before him so he would have to let this rest.
"Very well. However, if it seems like he doesn’t seem knowledgeable, I will send him away," said Jack.
"I am fine with that. I am lucky that Chester won’t judge me like others do. I worry about our child," Beth said, placing her hand on her belly. "Talk about me having a child when I am not married is starting to spread. I do deserve it for getting involved in you when you still-"
"Nonsense!" Jack exclaimed, angered by people bothering Beth. Why listen to what they were saying when she only needed to be concerned about what he thought? "Don’t pay them any mind."
"How can I do that? I worry about what is said about you and I worry that this child might be bullied because of how they are coming into this world. I can’t help feeling that already I am a terrible mother," Beth said, tears forming in her eyes shortly after.
"You will not be a terrible mother. You’re always apologising when you don’t need to and you are always caring for those around you. It is my fault for not being quick to propose to you. I’ve been a little distracted," Jack said, leaving out what was on his mind. "We’ll get married soon," he promised.
Jack couldn’t have his child be talked about. The right thing to do was to marry Beth as soon as his divorce was final. He didn’t see why it was taking so long to happen when there weren’t many couples in the town looking to get divorced. Most decided to stay with each other as it was best to avoid the town speaking of them.
Scarlet was the only woman Jack could think of who was so quick to throw everything away. It was the price of marrying someone who knew she would be fine without him. Regardless of what he would do, Beth would never be so quick to throw him away. Beth needed him. She loved him too much to be without him.
Beth wasn’t like Scarlet. She wasn’t Scarlet.
"Jack?"
"Oh? Sorry," he apologised for being lost in thought. These days it was constantly on his mind that he was losing Scarlet. She no longer loved him but it wasn’t easy to let go of her.
It wasn’t meant to end this way with his relationship with Beth becoming so serious. He was to have Scarlet and Beth at the same time, eventually throwing Beth away when Scarlet would go back to loving him. Now there was another man around Scarlet and Jack didn’t know who it was.
"Let’s get married the day after my divorce with final. You can start planning now and tomorrow I will get a ring for you-"
Jack was silenced by Beth jumping on him to hug him.
"Careful," Jack warned, trying not to shift his body to make it more comfortable for her. "With this, you should stop worrying about what anyone says about you. No one will dare speak poorly of our child or you."
Beth wiped tears from her eyes. Finally, things were going in the right direction for them to wed before anyone might unravel the lie she had created. Once the ring was on her finger and her name changed, there was no going back.
"I love you," Beth cried, holding Jack tightly.
"I know," Jack replied.
It bothered Beth that he wasn’t saying it back recently. At first, Beth believed she was mistaken about Jack still in love with Scarlet but what else was stopping him from saying that he loved her?
Though she was using him to raise her status and wanted his wealth, Beth had fallen for Jack and he needed to keep being in love with her. After all she did to mock Scarlet, Jack could not think of crawling back to her now. He could not embarrass Beth now.
"After the doctor comes, I will pick out my dress for the party. If only your divorce would be over today so we could announce our engagement to your friends. Are you certain you want me to go with you? What if Scarlet is present and she tries to harm me again?" Beth asked.
"You don’t need to worry about her. She had no plans of attending with me so she is not going to show. This is not like the ball where the royals could protect her. Are you certain that she tried to hurt you?" Jack asked as it didn’t seem like something Scarlet would do.
Scarlet might try to hurt him or Beth before this but not Beth while knowing that Beth was pregnant.
Beth loosened her hold on Jack and let go of him to sit up. "Do you think I purposely fell to hurt my baby? It is not a coincidence that when I got near her, I fell. You must realise that she must be jealous that I am carrying your child. The jealousy she holds will cause her to do things you never thought she would."
"I won’t be going near her from now on so you must keep her away from me. I don’t want to lose this gift sent to us. I hope you have not forgotten how she has hurt you," Beth said as he needed to hold on to why he came to her in the first place. Why was he so eager to sleep with a woman who was not his wife. "I have not forgotten," Jack said, feeling foolish for being concerned about Scarlet and the man around her. He should only be concerned about his child and Beth. The woman who cared for him. "You have my full attention. I love you too," he answered, realising he had not said it earlier.
"I know. Even when you don’t say it, your actions prove it. I promise to be the best wife you have ever seen so you don’t feel like you are in a marriage alone. I shall love you every day and make you happy. You will not regret meeting me," Beth promised. "Think only of your new family."
