Chapter 29: Threat (2)
"You should properly look into who he is before you keep someone like that by your side. Is this your revenge because of what I did? You don’t have to go so far," said Jack.
Scarlet stopped just as her hand was on the doorknob to open the door. "Revenge?" Scarlet questioned, amused that he thought she had time to spare on him for such a thing.
Scarlet chuckled once more. Her run-ins with Jack these days were normally a headache but today he had taken on comedy.
"I hope you haven’t injured your head in my hotel. That would be quite a pain to have the doctor here tend to you. I have no interest in getting even with you. To get revenge in hopes of your attention, I would have to want you. That is not something a wish upon a star would grant," said Scarlet.
Scarlet almost wanted to direct him to one of the wards in town rather than a doctor to save the doctor from dealing with this delusion.
"Don’t let the stupidity win, Jack," Scarlet advised him so she could avoid having to hear the stupidity. "You are following your father in taking care of your family business. Do not make a fool of yourself."
While Scarlet wanted nothing to do with Jack, she hoped he wouldn’t be his family business as his mother had put a lot of effort into preparing Jack for the position he had now. It was always irritating to see those responsible for the jobs of many doing stupid things.
"You are one to speak when you are stupidly spending time around a stranger. I question if you had him all along-"
"You don’t get to speak of cheating. I might have been many things, but I was not unfaithful. You were enough for the two of us. You should be happy that I was not angry enough to skin you alive. Leave before you make an ugly bag for someone," Scarlet said, pushing open the door as if there was nothing more to speak about. "Drag him out if you need to."
Jack stepped to the right to get one last look at Scarlet before the guards would come to him. "Then you’ve foolishly attached yourself to a man you don’t know?"
"It is time to leave," said Dawson, one of Scarlet’s guards. He was tired of seeing Scarlet be interrupted by blabbering fools when she was here to work and then return to her estate. "You’re making life difficult for all of us."
"What do you do when she is meeting strange people?" Jack questioned, raising his voice because of the incompetent guards. "You need to do what you are paid for." freeweɓnovel.cѳm
Dawson stood in front of his peers, walking forward to make Jack walk back to where he was meant to exit. "We were not hired to get into her personal business. Do not try to yell at us because she is moving on. How is your child?" He asked, bringing light to the new family Jack started.
Jack was having a bit of memory loss so Dawson had to help him.
Dawson loved his job as he could witness new lows done by the people coming around Scarlet. He also loved that she was quick to have him use force. He was handsomely paid and got to throw out rich people.
Jack gritted his teeth. "Do not speak of my child."
"Do not speak of her affairs. What is this now?" Dawson muttered, watching as a worker struggled with a large vase filled with flowers.
Jack’s mouth was slightly opened over the flowers which were clearly sent to court Scarlet. Before the worker could pass him, he snatched the card neatly tucked to the side of the flowers. Jack quickly read it before it was taken from him and a guard was pulling on his shirt to drag him to the door.
Jack was lost in shock from the name on the card as it was someone he knew sending flowers to his wife. Someone who had patted him on the back for finding Beth but now they were trying to court Scarlet.
Not only did he have to look into the man from the ball but now he had to keep an eye on the men he thought were friends. Even if they were merely acquaintances there should be some loyalty to him to not court Scarlet.
At the moment, he was still married to her.
"That fucking bastard," Jack cursed, furious. He would go to his former friend now but then word of this might get out and he would look a fool.
Jack came to realise he was being dragged out when he almost tripped. "Get your hands off of me. I will walk out as I have no business here."
Dawson let go of Jack as they made it to the door for him to go down. "Why didn’t you do that in the beginning. Escort him out. Please book a room in the future for a better experience. Have a good day."
Jack glared at the guard he had always hated. He was confident Scarlet had hired the guard to make him angry. "Why did she hire a criminal? A man once imprisoned."
Dawson turned around to go back to Scarlet while his peers saw Jack out. "Push to see her again and you’ll get a glimpse of why she hired me. Go to your woman and child. There is nothing for you here. Though it is funny to see you think you have a say in her relationships."
Jack now considered that Dawson might be a man Scarlet sought comfort in. Signs were starting to show that she might have had her own affair so he should no longer be painted as the bad guy.
Before he could deal with the mouthy guard, he had to deal with his friend and the man from the ball. Scarlet was not yet divorced so they could not approach her. Regardless of their divorce, she would always be only his.
Dawson returned to Scarlet’s office and opened the door. "Both guests are gone."
"Good. Inform the staff that I have important things to look over and I am not taking any guests. I don’t want to see anyone waiting to speak with me. Why are you smiling so much?" Scarlet questioned after looking up from her papers. "Did you throw him?"
"It is not that. Flowers came for you and he snatched the card from it. I have it if you wish to see it," Dawson said, walking toward the table.
"I don’t care for it," Scarlet said, annoyed that the flowers were now coming here. "Was seeing him grab it funny to you?"
"It is," Dawson admitted.
"Good. You can never complain that work isn’t fun. Send the town guards in right away when they arrive. I don’t want them lingering around outside for too long to get the guest talking," said Scarlet.
"If I may ask, why would they be coming?" Dawson asked. He followed Scarlet a lot and knew most of what she did throughout the day. He couldn’t think of something new for the guards to come to her. Unless something old was dug up.
"Because Naomi is a predictable fool," Scarlet answered, knowing her earlier threat would come up.
