Chapter 234: Wake up (3)
’Don’t you think that at this time you should be concerned for your mother? She has to be tough on you since you have not been doing what is best for your family. Setting fire to my estate wasn’t a good idea because I am to have your home burn to the ground. You know how much my family cares for that estate," said Scarlet.
She was not going to let Jack get off easy with what he had done. Scarlet was planning to do more than an eye for an eye. She wanted to take more for Jack being foolish enough to set a bit of her home on fire.
"How did you know it was me?" Jack asked.
"There are plenty of fools around me but there is only one who would be so bold to set my home on fire. And it didn’t help that you didn’t get away in time along with you calling my estate before you did it. That wasn’t smart. I suggest you move some of your valuables from your home before it burns," said Scarlet.
Jack was not upset by her burning it as he didn’t want to stay there anymore. It was where he planned to stay with Beth to raise their child but everything about that was a lie. "I was going to take Beth’s baby to have us raise it. I thought that would please you." freewёbnoνel.com
"Then you did not know me well. I would never raise the child of the woman you saw behind my back. Not that there was ever a child. That is how you two went to try mocking me so how did you ever think I would forgive you and give you another chance? I avoided you yet you wanted to embarrass me," Scarlet said, failing to understand Jack’s mind.
How did Jack ever think he had a chance? Did he not sit and think back to everything that happened before the divorce, during, and after? His actions and his words then were not even the greatest.
"I lashed out at you because I was angry. I still loved you and I wanted to make you regret leaving me. I never thought you would divorce me and continue to avoid me. We were once so close that I thought you would give me a second chance. I still love you," Jack confessed.
Scarlet sighed as speaking to Jack was like speaking to a broken record. She had said it as simply as she could for him to understand. "You do not love me, Jack. You don’t like feeling like you have lost to a man beneath you. You don’t like that you were started to be laughed at for losing me. This is about your ego, not love."
"I do not love you and I do not care about what you can offer me. I do not need a man in my life to take care of me. I can do that quite well with the money I have. I think lower of you now for thinking you could bring a child to me and everything would be fine," said Scarlet.
She would one day like to be a mother but not that way. If Beth was pregnant, Scarlet would have sent Jack and the child from her doors.
"Have you ever thought that you might be the one who makes it impossible to have a child? I don’t know how long you were sleeping with Beth but she had to fake being pregnant-"
"Are you pregnant?" Jack asked, praying she would say no. How else could she now decide he was the issue?
"That is nothing I have to share with you-"
"Are you pregnant?" Jack asked, needing an answer. freёwebnoѵel.com
"Jack, watch how loud you are as I do not need this being talked about. Whether I am or not has nothing to do with you anymore. I would not share such news with you. I only need you to understand that I have moved on. If you continue to bother me, I will kill you," Scarlet said, fed up with his ways.
Jack ran his fingers through his hair. Having to hear she was pregnant would scare him as it might mean that he could not get anyone pregnant. That was bad for him as he needed a son.
All this time, part of his troubles with Scarlet came from him not being happy that she hadn’t given him a child. He had blamed it on her not wanting to sleep with him and then on her just not having the ability to hold a child.
Jack recounted all the times he had insulted her. Saying she did not have it in her to be kind to anyone so a child would never find warmth in her womb. He had been cruel all along when there was a chance he had been the cause of it.
He had fallen in love with Beth because he thought she had given him the one thing Scarlet could not. He had enjoyed ruining Scarlet’s name over something that was a lie.
"I’m sorry," Jack apologised, his head hung low as he could not bring himself to look at her. How was he to face her after the things he had done? He had been so angry that he missed so much.
"So you do know those two words. I don’t exactly accept it but it’s a step. I don’t want to ever see you show up before me to give any more apologies. I can admit that I wasn’t the greatest wife. I was consumed with work and I should have voiced when I no longer felt in love with you. We both needed to speak then but now there is nothing we have to say to each other," said Scarlet.
There wasn’t a reason for them to speak when they were in the same room or reach out to each other. Their mothers were still friends so the two families would have some sort of conversation but Scarlet and Jack did not have to speak.
"Goodbye Jack," Scarlet said, hoping this would be the final time speaking.
Jack stood up to leave without returning the goodbye or looking at Scarlet. He just wanted to be alone right now and after his talk with his mother, he couldn’t speak to her. He had to mourn his father alone and dwell on the fact he might not be able to have children.
"I’ve cleaned my face," Dorothy said, entering the room just as Jack walked out.
"You were eavesdropping. I saw a part of your dress when I stood up," said Scarlet.
"Well, I couldn’t leave you alone with him. Forget having a drink, come take a walk with me. Sitting around here is starting to make me feel depressed," Dorothy said, holding her hand out to Scarlet.
"Very well," Scarlet replied, getting up to join Dorothy.
