Chapter 210: What family looks like (3)

"Well, I can say one thing about the Kingsleys. They’ve got some handsome boys. At first glance, I don’t see why anyone would want to harm you. You look so innocent," Rue said after inspecting Victor.

She knew looks could be deceiving but Victor didn’t look like he could hurt a fly. Rue would bet that even at her age she would beat him in whatever he challenged her to. A visit to the border was going to change that quickly.

"We’ll talk about when you’ll leave with us after dinner. We shouldn’t spoil dinner by talking about poisons now. I must say that with different mothers, I can see quite the similarity with you two even though Ian strongly resembles his father," said Rue.

"Lucky me," Ian muttered.

"We do? No one has ever said Ian and I look alike. They always say that I look everything like my mother while Ian looks exactly like my father. Thank you," Victor said as someone finally agreed with him.

"You do look a lot like your mother but with the two of you sitting so close, it is obvious that you are brothers. It’s good to not look so alike. If one of you commits a crime, you cannot be mistaken for each other. I look a lot like my younger sister and it didn’t help how fast she grew tall like my father. The maids sometimes mistook us, but it was fun," Rue smiled, remembering the confusion.

She liked it when her sisters took the blame for something that she did.

"It benefitted you because you were always the one up to something. Your mother always knew to point you out right away," Elijah said, having a very clear memory of the trouble Rue caused.

"Well, you can never get anything past my mother or father. Alana, when will your father return to the palace with this mystery woman he wants to get engaged to? I would like to have a word with him," said Rue, reminded now that she had to go to the palace.

Scarlet became suspicious of her grandmother wanting to meet with the former king. Normally wanting to have a word with someone meant just speaking but when it came to her grandmother, someone might get some sense knocked into them. "You cannot harm him."

"Oh please, I wouldn’t waste my time hitting him. I only want to have him step in to have this nonsense Luke is doing be over with. The Castros have never been this way and rather than have her hide here, someone needs to speak. I will do it," Rue offered as she knew just how to handle him. "Tell me when next you hear from him."

Alana looked forward to Rue’s talk with her father. She couldn’t think of the last time they spoke other than when he slipped to her that he was going to marry again. She hoped that there wouldn’t be a way for his new wife to become a child as no one needed to be bullied again for him remarrying.

It hurt that he might know of her no longer living in the palace but he had not been writing, calling, or at least visited her.

Scarlet sipped on the wine she had poured as she listened to her family. Her talk with Luke never goes well so it might end the small argument if her grandmother stepped in.

She looked down at her lap where her left hand was suddenly held by Ian under the table. Scarlet knew she should have sat elsewhere because he would look to trouble her since he was not spending the night.

Scarlet didn’t look at Ian to avoid bringing attention to how they were now. The conversation was perfectly fine with Luke and she didn’t want to speak of her relationship.

Once again, Scarlet couldn’t understand how she was to deal with this needy man. He squeezed her hand most likely wanting her to look his way. They had not spoken since they rejoined everyone but Scarlet didn’t think that it was so long ago.

Scarlet turned to her left to finally look at him and was rewarded with a smile. Now she wondered if she were to leave Lockwood to go on a trip alone if he would get lonely and try to follow her.

After he mentioned being a good father, the thought came to her that if they were to have a child together, what if they always wanted to be near her? To hold her hand and join her wherever she had to go?

It didn’t sound bad now that she was without a child but thinking of what it would be like later on was a bit scary.

’Do I want a child now?’ Scarlet thought.

They had already done the deed for it to happen a few times but Scarlet was yet to believe she could have a child. She had long concluded that it was impossible for her and though Beth’s lies should change her mind, it would take a doctor telling her that she was pregnant for her mind to change.

Samara noticed the quiet interaction between the two. She welcomed any opportunity to see how Scarlet’s relationship with Ian was going. A lot seemed to have changed since the last visit so now she didn’t have to worry about Ian not showing up for the family trip. She wouldn’t mind him bringing Victor along.

"Scarlet, have you heard from Nolan? He seems to be missing and his father is trying to find anyone who knows where he wandered off to," said Leonard.

Scarlet put her glass down as her drink was spoiled by Nolan’s name. "After our last terrible talk and the night he visited you, I have not heard from Nolan."

Scarlet side-eyed Ian since it was a bit strange how Nolan gave up after being so determined. She knew Nolan well so it wasn’t like him to just accept Ian and go somewhere that his father couldn’t reach him. freewebnøvel.com

"I am hurt that you are suspicious of me. I don’t even remember who Nolan is," Ian honestly replied. A face wasn’t coming to him after he heard the name. Whoever Nolan was, he didn’t do anything memorable in Ian’s opinion.

"He was my lawyer. You met him for the first time at the ball. Hopefully, he is fine and his disappearance has nothing to do with us. I don’t want to hear about him tonight or any other night unless there is some drastic turn," said Scarlet, wanting Nolan’s name to remain forgotten.

She was still suspicious that Ian had something to do with it but suspected that Nolan might be laying low to gather something.

’It is always something with these men,’ Scarlet thought. ’I should make a business to help them get over their feelings.’
