Chapter 186: Secrets (2)

"But first, you should find out where your son is. Look at the hour it is and he has not returned," Layla said, refusing to drink before Victor was back home safe and sound. "What if he has found himself in trouble?" frёeωebɳovel.com

Hank sighed, tired of her life revolving around just Victor. Here he was trying to enjoy the night with her since it was just the two of them, but she was so focused on Victor. "I will drink alone. You treat him as though he’s a child. He won’t know how to live his life if you are not around."

"And what is so bad about that?" Layla questioned, taking a step back from Hank. Victor should depend on her that way. "I know what is best for him." fгeewёbnoѵel.cσm

"Treat him that way when he is a child and you as the parent must care for him, but not when he is a man and should be able to take care of himself. I’m tired of the jokes that we are raising a fool who can’t do anything. He’s smart but far behind his peers because you want to treat him like a baby," said Hank.

"He is my only child," Layla argued. She had to watch over Victor so he had the best life possible. He might fail to spot the dangers around him so she had to be there to protect him. "He’s not ready to be on his own yet."

"He’s at the age where he should have been married and have about two children by now. Even with our wealth, who will want to marry a man with an overbearing-"

"Overbearing," Layla repeated, angered by the word. She was not overbearing. She was a mother protecting her child. Hank would never understand what it was like to be in her position. "I don’t expect for you to understand when you have not done a good job as a father."

"I have taken care of my son and you for years. Do not forget whose home it is that you stand in. How your status became better after marrying me," said Hank.

"Oh, Hank. Do not try to make it sound like I was without status. My family name is why you were so desperate to marry me. I almost thought you were secretly without wealth with the way you chased me. I would have been fine without you. You’re a good father? Ha," Layla scoffed.

"You said you have taken care of your son. One son. You didn’t take care of the other so you are a terrible father. I, on the other hand, have always been a wonderful mother,’ Layla said, smiling as there was nothing to paint her as otherwise.

"Sending Ian out to the cottage was your doing," said Hank.

Layla nodded her head, agreeing with him. "I told you that I didn’t want to see him and you sent him to the cottage right away. I said not to give him the same gifts as Victor and you did that. He wasn’t my son so why should have cared where he went or what he got?"

She continued, "You were his father and you disowned him quite easily to please me. You are not a good father, Hank."

"I did what I had to do to keep the peace here. Being a mother, you shouldn’t have been proud of the things you did to Ian. Do not try to make only me be the bad guy here. I won’t stand for this," Hank warned.

Ian would have been living in the big house if not for Layla’s complaints. She was going to make all of their lives hell so he did what he thought was best.

Layla laughed as nothing he said would change he turned his back on his son so easily. "No one could ever convince me to send Victor out of here to please someone. Let’s not talk about me being a bad mother because there is a real bad parent around here."

"I suppose I will get a drink and wait for Victor’s return. Get ready to send someone out to search for him if he does not return in the next hour. Are you not going to pour me a drink?" Layla asked, taking a seat on Hank’s chair.

Hank should know by now that it was a waste of his time to argue with her when it came to her son. He should make sure his hands were clean before he tried to accuse her of something.

Layla enjoyed seeing him have nothing to say to her. That was the way it always should be. He should keep quiet and let her do her duty as Victor’s mother.

"I am growing tired of always arguing with you. No, I’ve long grown tired of you. You’ve woken me up to something. If I want Ian to come back here to join the fight to be my heir, I simply need to get rid of you," Hank realised.

Layla’s smile quickly turned to a frown as she panicked. He could not send her from here just to bring a bastard in. Did he have any idea of the shame she would endure for letting something like that happen? "Dear husband, I suggest that you stop drinking since you are speaking nonsense."

"I only had one glass. It is you who made me see what I should do. You should have a drink and enjoy the night," Hank said as tomorrow might be a stressful day for her.

He had given plenty of his days to Layla and was at his limit to what he could put up with. Hank had been cleaning up her mess with all the trouble she had caused. It was time for that to end. What Hank needed was a woman he could enjoy being around, not one that gave him a headache.

Layla stood up. She was not going to drink and celebrate with him planning to throw her out of what was equally her home. "Don’t be a fool, Hank. You cannot be without me and I am not going anywhere. You’ll never find another wife like me."

Hank hoped he wouldn’t find another wife like her. While she knew how to act around his peers, Hank wanted something different. He could always build a better wife.

There was already a woman in his life who that town could understand him getting with after sending Layla away. He could turn Ian’s mother into the perfect wife. She obeyed his every word more than Layla ever did.

"That is true," Hank responded to Layla.

Hearing this, Layla thought he had finally come back to his senses.
