Chapter 112: Trust (3)
"Even if I were to give you a chance, you would just end up getting hurt. I don’t share the same feelings that you have for me," said Scarlet.
"I am quite aware of that. You won’t share those feelings with me if you don’t open your heart to me. I am not asking for much, Scarlet. Just that if you feel something for me, at least pursue it. You’ve been hurt many times but I promise you, I am not here to betray you," Ian said, his hand settling to be lost in her hair.
"Like I said, let’s put it to test why you dreamed about me. It’s a win-win for you. You get to kiss me again and find out what was behind the dream. Wouldn’t you like to get me to stop speaking of it?" Ian asked.
Scarlet didn’t need to kiss him to get him to stop talking. "There are many ways that I can get you to not speak. My family is quite skilled with torture."
"I must foolishly confess that kissing me into silence scares me. I suggest that you be the one to do it," Ian joked.
Scarlet had the urge to pinch him. "Has this ever worked on someone?"
"One day it will work on you," Ian replied.
"I doubt it," Scarlet responded as she had been ignoring his flirting from the start. "When are you going to let go of me, Ian?"
"Never. You seem quite comfortable on my lap. Don’t try to turn the conversation away from what I asked. Yes or no, Scarlet? I will respect you if you say no and let you go," said Ian.
"I’ve also been burned by people in my life yet I don’t treat you as if you are the people who hurt you. I know that I cannot place their actions on you," Ian said, hoping Scarlet could do the same.
Ian would like to believe that his actions so far were different from Jack’s. Just from meeting the man once, Ian could see that they were nothing alike. Scarlet was just expecting him to betray her because of the person before him. fгeewebnovёl.com
"I know that," Scarlet replied.
She was well aware that he was not Jack or any of the other people bothering her. It was just easier to protect herself if she didn’t trust so easily. It was unfortunate for Ian that came at a time in her life when she wouldn’t open up so easily.
’Was there ever a time?’ Scarlet wondered. She was mostly trusting with the relatives she grew up with and the friends she kept over the years were children of close friends of her family.
It wasn’t only Scarlet who didn’t let anyone into her small circle. Her family had always been this way to stop anyone who might hurt them from getting close.
Scarlet was brought back to give her attention to Ian when she felt his fingers going through her hair. As much as she wanted to remind him of the no-touching rule, which was quite out the window since she was still on his lap for some reason, his touch was soothing after the headache she had earlier.
There wasn’t supposed to be a man in her life as she needed a break from them yet here Ian was and she was the one to invite him into her life. She would like to know the answer as well for why she did something unlike herself. To go so far as to dream of them being that way.
It had been some time since she was intimate with a man. She would also like the answer to whether she was just missing out on being with a man or if it was some sort of feeling she had for Ian that she was that way.
"Very well. Let us test it," Scarlet agreed to his idea. She didn’t want to be bothered with confusing feelings anymore as it would only get in the way of her work.
Ian was a handsome man and Scarlet was well aware of being attracted to him, but was there anything more like Ian claimed he felt with her? frёeωebɳovel.com
"Why are you not saying anything?" Scarlet asked as she thought he would have jumped at the chance to kiss her. His silence was starting to scare her but then she also realised that if he was shocked, it gave her the chance to escape his hold.
"Not so fast," Ian said, fighting against her escape. "You can’t agree to my idea and then try to run away. You’re going to have something happen with my heart with the way you surprise me. I didn’t think you would have said yes."
"Then no-"
"Now, now. You’re not the type of woman to go back on your word, Scarlet. Can we disregard that rule of no touching that you have?" Ian asked, needing it gone for just a moment.
Scarlet was tempted to strangle him for mentioning that now as if he hadn’t broken it. There was no way she could have any other feelings than just being attracted to him when he was this way. "Let me go off so that I can be off your lap and then you can question me about not touching."
Ian loosened his hold on her so Scarlet could escape whenever she wanted. "You sitting on my lap is hardly the kind of touching I thought of when you made that rule. So, I haven’t broken it yet. Would you like to know how-"
"Keep your thoughts to yourself," Scarlet replied.
"How unfair. You get to bring up your dirty dream of me but I can’t do the same. Tell me when you feel uncomfortable," said Ian.
This isn’t where he thought his visit to her estate would lead him when he had missed her and decided to see her here. He was a smitten fool as Owen started to call him. To be this way with someone he hadn’t known long, was quite exciting and scary at the same time. Scarlet wasn’t the only one who had fears of being betrayed again.
Scarlet couldn’t stop the growing anticipation, especially after feeling like her dream had been stopped too soon. Ian had used her as a distraction at the party, perhaps it was time to make use of him the same way right now. Just for this moment.
"Forget about that one rule right now," Scarlet said, once again taking the initiative to kiss Ian just like she did at the ball.
Ian had somehow managed to pique her curiosity and now she wanted to test what this was. Since he arrived, she had been doing things that were unlike herself and Scarlet was yet to find out if it was good or bad.
Scarlet felt his tongue already slipping inside her mouth. She had given him one chance to prove just what was between them and clearly, Ian was not going to waste the opportunity.
Scarlet continued to do something she normally wouldn’t by pulling on his shirt, just where the top button was to have him come toward her.
This was quite annoying.
Annoying that it was better than what had haunted her nights ago and she wanted more of it.
