Chapter 9: Sable: A Job Offer

"You don’t seem worried about your identity being discovered," the man said as he removed his sunglasses, resting them on the table.

On the opposite side of the table sat Liam who was wolfing down pastries, seemingly without a care in the world.

"We’ll get to that," he answered with his mouth still full, "but these cakes are too good to ignore."

That’s right, Zero, Earth’s greatest hitman, was a sweet tooth.

The man let out a chuckle before leaning back, letting the kid continue eating.

With the way the kid was behaving, one would think that he was completely off guard but he knew better.

The kid hadn’t stopped assessing him since the moment he sat down.

It was subtle enough that anyone else would easily miss it, but having spent over a decade and a half in the Grey side of the world, stuff like this was easy to catch.

And he was right.

Liam was silent observing the man’s features and taking note of them. The first thing he noticed was that the man before him was large.

Not as large as Titan, but still large enough Or rather, it would be more accurate to say he was quite muscular.

Then there was his white hair and similarly colored beard which surprisingly matched well with his brown skin.

But all that info was useless to Liam, after all, he had already seen the man once before.

But he put that aside, for now, he had pastries before him to enjoy.

It took a while, but Liam eventually finished the pastries before him, and only then did he finally acknowledge the man’s presence.

"Thanks for the treat," he said.

"Don’t worry about it," the man responded with a smile.

"Now then," Liam said again as he leaned back, "what does a Grey market agent want from me?"

"..." The man was silent for a while before letting out an amused laugh, "You really are something else kid."

"I’ll take that as a compliment," Liam answered.

"It is," the man said, "though I’m curious, how did you know by just looking at me?"

He was truly curious, after all; he was certain that not just anyone could find out what he did by simply looking.

"Just a guess," Liam said with a shrug before leaning a bit forward, "Sable."

That was very clearly a lie, but the man didn’t press; instead, he focused on the name he just called out.

"Was that also a guess?" The man, Sable, asked with narrowed eyes.

Liam remained silent for a moment as he stared directly into the man’s brown eyes.

The atmosphere around the table quickly grew tense, to the point that even the servers who were moving around could feel it.

"Of course not," Liam suddenly said with a chuckle, instantly diffusing the tension, "it’s written on your arm."

Sable looked down at his shirt’s folded sleeve, his arms now revealed because he had taken off his jacket, or rather, Coat.

Tattooed on his left arm were the Japanese characters セーブル which translates to Sable, his name.

But what surprised him was,

"You know Japanese?" He asked.

"I know a few words," Liam answered with a shrug again, very clearly lying.

After all, back on Earth, he had learnt every possible language, not because it would make his job easier but for an even simpler reason,

He liked taunting his targets.

And that would be impossible to do if they were separated by a language barrier.

Though, he wasn’t too surprised by the existence of the Japanese in this world. After all, the author of the comic had been unwilling to come up with an entirely new set of languages, so they had simply used existing ones instead.

"I see," Sable nodded, mentally adding that to the list of things that seemed to make no sense about the kid.

"Let’s get straight to the point," he spoke again before placing a card on the table, "I’d like to offer you a job."

Liam picked up the card and studied it for a few moments before setting it back down, falling silent afterward.

Sable waited quietly for the kid’s response, though he already suspected Liam would refuse. After all, the boy seemed to know exactly who he was and what type of job he was currently offering.

And considering Liam had just walked out of a school building after saving hostages, Sable was fairly certain the kid dreamed of becoming a hero or something along those lines.

"What’s the pay like?" Liam suddenly asked as he looked up at the man again.

Of course, he knew what was being offered, after all, Sable was a character who appeared quite a few times in the comic.

The Grey market was technically an illegal part of this world, but it was also the part that handled all types of dirty jobs so they were tolerated by both heroes and villains.

And in that world, Sable was a man who had made quite a name for himself.

He was an agent of sorts, recruiting talented individuals to act as mercenaries or, in other words, hitmen.

Sable was once a Grey market mercenary too, but after a job gone wrong, the thirty-five-year-old man had chosen an early retirement.

Though, he couldn’t just walk away from the Grey market, so he decided to become an agent.

And given that he wasn’t missing an arm, Liam guessed that this was his early years as an agent.

Sable was initially caught off guard by the kid’s response but he didn’t let it show as he answered, "It depends on the job and its difficulty, but at minimum, you stand to make $10,000." frёeωebɳovel.com

Again, that wasn’t much for someone like Zero, but he couldn’t start picking and choosing right now,

Especially considering their situation.

For now, he had to start somewhere.... besides, being a hitman was the only job he could properly do.

"I’ll have final say on the type of contracts you expect me to accept," Liam said.

"Of course," Sabled said with a smile.

"Then I look forward to working with you," Liam said as he stood up and extended his hand.

Sable also stood up and shook the kid’s hand before saying,

"Likewise."

With that, Sable watched as the kid walked out of the cafe, only to stop at the door put his phone on his ear and then headed towards the school, this time towards the front gate.

A moment after, Sable also withdrew his phone from his coat’s pocket and dialed a number.

The moment the call connected, he said,

"Find out what you can about the kid in image I just sent you."
