Chapter 11: A Greedy Man
[Are you sure you’ll be fine?] Sable’s voice came from Liam’s earpiece, causing him to smile.
"I’ll be fine," he answered, "but if you think the job’s too dangerous, you can always increase my pay."
[....] Sable was silent for a while before saying, [Money truly is your only motivation, isn’t it?]
"You can’t blame me either," He defended, "I’m way behind on bills and I have two kids to take care of, it’d be weird if I didn’t like money."
"Anyway, catch you later," Liam added with a grin, "I’ve got a job to complete."
With that, he tapped on the earpiece and took it off, since he never liked someone being in his ear whilst he worked.
Fortunately, both Charlotte and Sable clearly understood that.
Liam then let out a sigh as he looked at the city below him, thinking over Sable’s question.
Was money truly his only motivation?
No, not even back on Earth. Back then, he became a hitman because he needed enough money to save the orphanage where he grew up.
And there weren’t many options for a thirteen-year-old,
Fortunately, he had caught the eye of a certain retired hitman who decided to train him on a whim.
Now?
Now he had two kids that depended on him and for the first time in a long while, he didn’t feel alone...so he’d do whatever it took to keep them safe.
Even if he wasn’t their Liam.
"Hey hey," he suddenly pulled himself out of his thoughts, "we’ve got a job to complete, now’s not the time to get sentimental."
With another sigh, he placed a hand in his pocket and looked down at the building across the street.
It was a seven-story commercial building, and the target that occupied the entire sixth floor was a man named Richard Cross, in his mid-forties.
He had spent the last three years running an information brokerage out of what officially appeared to be a private consulting firm.
What it actually was, was a service for people who wanted to find specific Awakened Humans for specific purposes.
In a place like the Grey market, no one cared about that, hell, there were hundreds of information brokers selling the same info as him.
But then Richard got greedy.
Seeing the competition in the information broker business, he decided to take a risk that no one else has,
He collaborated with a known Awakened Human trafficking villain group. ƒгeeweɓn૦vel.com
It was a mid-tier villain organization that had been operating in the city’s underbelly for the better part of four years.
The HA couldn’t be bothered with them because they had bigger issues to deal with, but most believed it was because an important Awakened Human hadn’t disappeared yet.
The grey market, on the other hand, didn’t bother with said group because they were not heroes.
But since one of theirs had made a deal with them, it was time to cut off the diseased stalk before it affected the entire plant.
The grey market only existed because both the HA and Villain groups needed it, but some within the HA didn’t like that,
And Richard’s situation would provide the perfect excuse to move against the unlicensed operators.
Hence, the reason they hired Sable and in turn Liam.
"Let’s get to it, shall we," Liam said as he continued looking at the commercial building before him.
From all he had gathered so far, this place was crawling with Richard’s guards.
Well, that much was to be expected, after all, Richard wasn’t stupid. He very clearly knew that he was walking a dangerous line.
But he truly believed that it would be worth it in the end....after all, with enough money, he could just make all this go away.
"Those three are going to be problems," Liam muttered, recalling the information from the document.
Richard had managed to hire three awakened humans, one with a sensory type factor, one with a factor that doubled any force that reached him before releasing it at a target, and finally, a lady with an unknown Factor.
The one with the sensory Factor already invalidated all of Liam’s stealth options, which meant he’d have to face everyone in that building.
That was going to be a problem, but not one that zero couldn’t fix.
Besides, with a promised pay of $100,000, there was no way he wouldn’t find a solution for this. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
With a sigh, he walked close to the edge of the building he stood on, aimed at the fire escape of the building across the street, and jumped.
The gap between the two buildings was about four meters, which wasn’t impossible for someone like him.
The wind ruffled both his formal jacket and white hair, but did nothing to hinder his landing.
Liam reached up and grabbed the metal railing of the stairs above, using the momentum of his jump to swing himself onto the landing below.
He then looked up, noticing that the fire escape went all the way to the top of the building, and he was currently on the third floor.
Starting from the top would’ve been easier, since he’d only have to deal with the awakened humans, but with one of them possessing a sensory-type Factor, Liam was certain his presence had already been detected.
"Or maybe it takes a while before it detects a new presence," Liam muttered as he walked toward the door leading into the building. "For all we know, the Factor hasn’t even been—"
He stopped as the door fully opened.
"Oh."
Gathered throughout the third-floor hallway were Richard’s guards, all with their weapons pointed directly at Liam.
It seemed he had been wrong. His presence had been detected immediately, causing him to let out a small chuckle.
"A kid?" A skinny man stepped forward from between the armed guards, lightly adjusting his transparent glasses as he looked at Liam with a frown, "Did the Grey Market underestimate my client that much?"
"This wouldn’t happen to be where the bathroom is, would it?" Liam asked as he looked at the armed men.
"..." The man with glasses looked at him for a while before turning around, "Kill him."
And a moment after his command,
BANG!
