Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Who Brought You Here?
"Did she come—"
"No, she didn’t." Professor Cheney cut her off.
Chloe was confused, but she was always on her senior’s side, so she quickly changed her tune. "Come? Why would she? My senior’s a homebody, and besides, she doesn’t like places like this."
Sarah Lynch murmured softly, "I see."
A flash of disdain crossed her eyes.
’What a nerd, always buried in her experiments. She wouldn’t even come to such a high-end cocktail party. A total waste of an invitation.’
’It’s better that she didn’t come. If she had, it would’ve been hard for me to say certain things.’
It was a shame her grandfather wouldn’t tell her what this Dr. Jennings looked like or give her any more information. It had left her on the back foot for the twenty days since she’d returned.
Just as she was about to leave, Professor Cheney suddenly asked, "Ms. Lynch, are you in a relationship?"
Sarah Lynch froze for a moment.
She didn’t answer yes or no, instead retorting, "Professor Cheney, why the sudden question?"
"We just heard President Sinclair of Stellaxis Technologies mention you."
Chloe nodded.
Sarah Lynch couldn’t help but give a bashful smile and nod. "Yes, I am. But my family doesn’t know yet, so I hope you and Assistant Chloe can keep it a secret for me."
Professor Cheney’s heart sank.
Chloe nodded and asked, full of curiosity, "Ms. Lynch, how long have you and President Sinclair been together? We’re talking about the President Sinclair of Stellaxis Technologies!"
Professor Cheney listened in silence.
"Sean and I have known each other since college. It’s been seven or eight years now. If I hadn’t gone abroad four years ago, we’d definitely be married by now. But it’s okay, we’ll be getting married soon anyway." Sarah Lynch’s face was full of anticipation. "You two have to come."
Chloe said with a smile, "Of course."
Professor Cheney nodded a beat later, then asked, "So when did you two get back together? After you returned to the country?"
Sarah Lynch suddenly felt Professor Cheney was being a bit odd. ’Why is a man in his forties or fifties being so gossipy?’
But she answered anyway.
"Not exactly after I came back. Actually, he was in touch with me often when I was abroad, and he’d even fly out to see me occasionally." Sarah Lynch smiled sweetly.
Chloe was a little envious.
Professor Cheney swayed, and Chloe quickly helped him to a seat.
Sarah Lynch asked with concern, "Professor Cheney, are you alright?"
"I’m fine, I’m fine." Professor Cheney’s face was clouded with worry. "I’m just getting old, not feeling too well. You young people go on ahead."
Just then, someone called for Sarah Lynch, so she went over.
The person who called her was none other than Sean Sinclair’s good friend, Spencer Shelby.
"The Beautiful Miss Lynch, dressed like this today... aren’t you trying to charm our Sean to death?"
"Who’s trying to charm him? I dress to please myself."
Spencer Shelby chuckled. "Did you come with Sean? I don’t see him around."
Sarah Lynch pouted. "He’s busy. He doesn’t have time for me."
Spencer Shelby said, "Sean could forget anyone, but he’d never forget you. He must be tied up with something important."
A wide smile spread across Sarah Lynch’s face.
Professor Cheney watched from afar. When he thought of all the years Leila Jennings had worried over Sean Sinclair, it just felt so unfair.
Chloe found a piece of chocolate. "Professor Cheney, do you have low blood sugar? Eat this."
Professor Cheney took the chocolate and warned Chloe, "Don’t go looking for Leila Jennings tonight, you understand?"
"Huh?" Chloe was puzzled. "Why? But without my senior, what... what am I supposed to do by myself?"
Professor Cheney glared at her. "Am I dead?"
"No! But Professor, you’re definitely going to be meeting one person after another, chatting with this person and that person."
"Then you’ll just stick with me. Isn’t it good for you to meet some senior figures? It’s settled."
Chloe could only resign herself to her fate and follow him. Then she was warned again not to look for her senior, and not to acknowledge her even if she saw her.
So when she walked right past her senior, she had to leave under her senior’s puzzled gaze.
"Chloe?" Leila Jennings saw Chloe look back, her lips pursed in a pout, looking very wronged.
’What’s wrong with her?’
"Sister Leila, who were you just calling out to?" Cherry Cole brought over two glasses of champagne and handed one to her.
Leila Jennings said, "I don’t know how."
Cherry Cole sat back down beside her. "It’s just for show. You don’t actually have to drink it."
Leila Jennings was amused. "Aren’t you going to network?"
"But I don’t want to leave you here all alone." Cherry Cole felt that meeting the big shots wasn’t that important anymore. She could just go home and beg Alden; he’d definitely take her to meet them.
’I could also beg my brother to get someone to make an introduction.’
She was Cherry Cole, after all. She had plenty of ways to meet the big shots, but she’d feel guilty leaving Sister Leila here all by herself.
"You sure think a lot for someone with such a little head." Leila Jennings tilted her chin up slightly. "Go on. I’ll be right here."
But Cherry Cole still shook her head. frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
Leila Jennings realized she couldn’t win against her stubbornness.
To keep Cherry Cole from getting bored sitting with her, she stood up and walked into the crowd.
But she didn’t know anyone.
Cherry Cole walked and grabbed snacks, not forgetting to feed some to Leila Jennings.
The two of them seemed completely out of place at the cocktail party. Everywhere they went, they drew attention from people who thought they were lowering the tone of the event.
"Who on earth let people like that in? Even in expensive clothes, they can’t hide how uncultured they are."
Hearing this, Sarah Lynch followed the person’s gaze.
At first, she saw Cherry Cole and was about to go over and say hello, but then she saw the woman who turned her head. She had a face that was familiar, yet one she couldn’t quite believe she was seeing.
"Know them?" Spencer Shelby asked, puzzled.
Sarah Lynch turned to him. "Don’t you find her familiar? The one in the lace dress."
Spencer Shelby shook his head. "Not at all."
He hadn’t recognized her.
Sarah Lynch also wondered if her eyes were playing tricks on her. ’How could Leila Jennings possibly be dressed like that? And at a place like this? Who did she come with?’
She suddenly remembered that Sean Sinclair hadn’t been waiting for her at the entrance as planned, and her expression faltered.
She said to Spencer Shelby, "Take another look."
"Isn’t she just a pretty woman?" Spencer Shelby truly didn’t recognize her at all.
Sarah Lynch’s tone was slightly urgent. "Leila Jennings."
"Who?" Spencer Shelby took a second to process it. "You mean Sean’s...?"
He didn’t dare say the word "wife" in front of Sarah Lynch.
Sarah Lynch nodded. "Doesn’t it look like her?"
"Now that you mention it, there is a resemblance, but how is that possible?" Spencer Shelby shook his head. "Impossible. How could she have the connections to get in here? And that outfit... unless..."
’Unless Sean brought her.’
Sarah Lynch knew what he was going to say and decided to go see for herself if it was really Leila Jennings.
In fact, seeing Cherry Cole only made her more certain.
Spencer Shelby quickly followed with his date, wanting to see what was going on.
’Has Sean lost his mind? Flaunting his wife in front of his Lover.’
Sarah Lynch walked over, her high heels clicking on the floor. "Leila Jennings?"
Leila Jennings turned around.
Her exquisite, beautiful face was revealed to Sarah Lynch.
Getting a closer look and realizing the woman was indeed Leila Jennings, Spencer Shelby’s eyes slowly widened, his jaw dropping so low you could fit an egg in it.
’Is this really Sean’s plain, dowdy wife?’
’How can she be this beautiful!’
A showy flower like Sarah Lynch instantly seemed tacky next to Leila Jennings’s cool, ethereal aura.
Sarah Lynch was also stunned.
"Why are you here?"
"Who brought you?"
The two rapid-fire questions exposed all her urgency and anxiety to Leila Jennings.
A flicker of light passed through Leila Jennings’s eyes as she looked at Sarah Lynch. "Who else could it be?"
