Chapter 35: Chapter 22: Lord Blake Lives Forever
"Who told you?"
"He announced it himself, in his reader group."
"He announced it himself?"
Quill was silent for a moment, then suddenly started laughing. "Good. Very good."
’He knows we’ll surround and attack him if he’s discovered, yet he still dares to show up for a book signing. Just like how he went to the Black Fruit Rainforest knowing he might die trying to find the Spring of Enlightenment... It seems our dear author is planning to pull the same trick twice?’
He liked Sean’s courage.
"It’s also possible he’s deliberately tricking us, trying to divert our attention and hide his real location," the orderly offered his opinion.
The source of the news was reliable—they had someone undercover in Sean’s reader group. But as for whether Sean’s words could be trusted...
It was hard to say. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom
The man was very cunning.
"It doesn’t matter." The news of Sean’s appearance had put Quill in an excellent mood, and he spoke more to his subordinate than he usually did. "If he doesn’t go to the book signing, the worst that happens is we continue looking for him, and my mood continues to sour. Personally, that’s not great news for me, but for our hospital, there will be no additional losses. But if he really dares to go... this time, I’ll make sure there’s no escape."
"And I believe he will go."
It’s often not your friends who know you best, but your enemies. Although Quill and Sean had little contact, having met only once, Sean’s calmness and decisiveness on that occasion had left a deep impression on him.
In a way, Sean was a madman too. His methods were very different from the other patients in the hospital. The more dangerous something was, the more he seemed to want to try it, because greater risk meant greater reward. For someone who wasn’t even afraid of trading his life with an enemy, Quill believed Sean absolutely had the guts to go to the book signing.
"So, who are we sending this time?" the orderly asked.
The complete annihilation of Vincent and his team had already proven that ordinary Witch Hunters and firearms posed little threat to Sean. They needed to up the dosage to save this stubborn patient.
"We’re not sending anyone."
Quill gazed at the empty cage hanging by the window, the glass reflecting the morbid smile on his face.
"This time, I’m going myself."
...
...
「Old Segal City.」
Sean, now wearing a hooded sweatshirt, kept his head down as he moved quickly through the crowd.
It had taken him two days to walk out of the Black Fruit Rainforest. He spent another two days on the road before flagging down a couple, politely asking them for a ride to the Siracle State border. After that, he found an unlicensed car that did smuggling runs and took it all the way to Old Segal City.
There were still five days until the book signing on the 1st. It didn’t matter whether Quill guessed he would arrive early or not.
Because he had a "bodyguard."
Today happened to be exactly one week after the great Mr. Blake gave his instructions to Kate.
Sean had rented a place in Old Segal City for a while before, so he was fairly familiar with the city. He first found a motel and got a room, solving his accommodation problem for the next few days.
Before leaving Holkaydo, Sean had gone to the bank and withdrawn all his savings. Although there wasn’t much left after his mortgage payments, if he was frugal, it should be enough to last until his royalties were paid on the 15th of next month—assuming Quill hadn’t had his bank card frozen.
One of the reasons he chose a motel was because it was cheap, offering better value than a hotel. More importantly, he wouldn’t need an ID, which reduced the risk of being tracked.
The person at the front desk was a slender young woman with a rose tattoo on her hand. Seeing that Sean was handsome, she gave him a discount—80 a night, breakfast included. She also handed him a small card with a sexy woman printed on it and said with a seductive gaze, "Call me tonight~"
Sean wasn’t interested. "I don’t need any services."
The girl replied, "Then I’ll call you. I do."
Sean: "?"
He decided to use the Truth Technique to lock his door tonight.
Under the girl’s intensely possessive gaze, Sean left the motel with a wooden expression and hailed a cab to the East Suburb.
He didn’t have the driver take him straight out of the city. Instead, he got out within the city limits and walked the rest of the way to the abandoned factory.
This was the address he had left for Kate.
This area had been derelict for years, and few people ever came here. This also meant that if anyone was seen, they would easily become a target of suspicion, and it would be difficult to shake off a tail. Therefore, it wasn’t a very suitable place for a rendezvous. A place with heavy foot traffic like a train station or a pedestrian street would have been far better. Sean could already picture Kate’s cautious demeanor, looking over his shoulder every few steps as he approached.
After all, that’s what he was doing himself.
And that was precisely the effect Sean wanted.
Two strangers meeting at a crowded train station could be a coincidence. But if they met in a deserted, abandoned factory, it had to be intentional. This would eliminate a lot of meaningless conversation and make people instinctively think deeper. Furthermore, a relatively enclosed and deserted environment would also give the stronger party a greater sense of security.
As Sean expected, Kate arrived, cautious as ever.
This was the first time he’d seen Kate in person, and he discovered the man’s acting skills were top-notch.
Kate wore sunglasses and a scarf, dressed in a jacket that made him look like a country cowboy. He was dragging a suitcase behind him. As he walked, he glanced around, occasionally stopping to think, perfectly playing the part of a lost tourist new to Old Segal City.
This deceptive act continued until he "fumbled" his way into the factory and saw Sean, who was similarly bundled up and wearing a face mask.
"!"
Kate was shocked.
’There’s someone else here?!’
Sean was also shocked.
A flame subconsciously flared to life in his palm.
He spoke at almost the same time as Kate:
"Who are you?!"
"Why are you here?"
The two eyed each other warily.
Kate noticed the movement in Sean’s hand. His voice turned cold. "You’re a Wizard?"
But Sean’s voice was even colder, his tone laced with a hint of killing intent. "And you’re not?"
’Someone who knows about Wizards but isn’t one can only be a Witch Hunter.’
With that one sentence, Sean made his own stance clear.
Kate’s mind raced. When he first saw Sean, his immediate reaction was that there had been a leak. But on second thought, that shouldn’t be possible.
Lord Blake had specifically instructed him to handle this personally, implying that no one else should know. Thus, he hadn’t told anyone, not even his teacher, Adelf.
Besides Lord Blake and himself, no third person knew this location.
’Lord Blake has no reason to harm me. Even if he did, he wouldn’t send Sean. The moment Sean revealed his Magic Power, Kate could tell he was just a Tier One Novice Wizard. He, on the other hand, was a Tier Five "Light Attendant" with his own unique title. With no one else around, if they were to fight, Sean would be nothing but cannon fodder. He wouldn’t last a single move against him.’
But if Sean wasn’t an enemy, if he was an ally, then what was he doing here?
Could it be...
"Were you also sent by Lord Blake?"
Sean froze for a second. "Also?"
Seeing his reaction, Kate knew he had guessed correctly. ’I’m a pretty good judge of character,’ he thought. He let out a sigh of relief and said, "You can put away your Magic Power. My name is Kate. You should have heard of me."
Sean looked utterly shocked. "Kate? The Light Attendant who can enter the second floor of the Holy Sanctuary?"
Kate removed his sunglasses, puffed out his chest proudly, and said, "That’s right. The one and only."
The misunderstanding was cleared up.
The flame in Sean’s hand died out. Kate asked him, "What did Lord Blake send you here to do? Can you tell me?"
’Am I supposed to give the materials in my suitcase to Sean?’
Sean hesitated for a moment before replying, "I’m not sure myself."
"How can you not be sure about your own business?" Kate asked, puzzled. Thinking Sean was still wary, he decided to be blunt. "I’m a straightforward person, so don’t mind me saying this."
"Given my Tier, if I wanted to kill you, you would have been dead the moment we met. You wouldn’t still be standing here. Alternatively, I could just capture you and use Mind Magic to slowly extract whatever I want to know without worrying about you lying. There’s absolutely no need for me to waste time talking to you like this."
’It’s mainly because his mission might be related to Sean; otherwise, he wouldn’t have bothered asking so many questions.’
"Of course, if Lord Blake told you not to reveal anything, you don’t have to say it," Kate added.
"No, it’s not that," Sean said, seemingly convinced. He gathered his thoughts and explained, "Actually, it’s not that Lord Blake sent me to do something. I ran into some trouble myself and went to pray to Lord Blake, and he was the one who told me to come here today."
’Some trouble?’
"What kind of trouble?" Kate asked.
"I’m being targeted by a doctor named Quill from Florist Hospital in Holkaydo," Sean explained. "I’m a writer, and I have a book signing on the 1st of next month. It might be dangerous."
"Then just don’t go, right?" Kate said, confused. "Which is more important, money or your life? I don’t need to tell you that, do I?"
"No, I have to go. This isn’t about money," Sean said seriously. "The book I wrote is called *Moon and Knight*. Although I took some dramatic liberties to make the story more entertaining, it is, in essence, a biography chronicling the grand, magnificent life of Lord Blake."
Sean’s tone was incredibly firm. "You may not know this, but Lord Blake has always been my faith. Even though the Era of Polymath has passed, that will never change."
"I will not forget him. None of us should forget him. Because without him, there would be no Empire today."
"I don’t expect everyone to see the truth of history or remember Lord Blake’s name, but I will still strive to make it happen."
"Faith cannot be defeated by danger. On the contrary, it only strengthens my resolve. The more my enemies oppose me, the more it proves I’m doing the right thing. Even if I die one day, nailed shut in my coffin, I will shout from my grave with this decaying voice—"
"Long live Lord Blake!"
This wasn’t just about Carl Black the person, but also about the spirit of daring to resist the oppression of the Witch Hunt Operation. Sean grew more and more agitated as he spoke, his intense emotions surging like a tide, enveloping Kate and making his eyes turn a little red. ’What an incredible display of true feeling!’ he thought.
Wasn’t he, too, one of Carl Black’s staunchest supporters?
So, there was someone else in this world who, like him, held Lord Blake as their lifelong faith.
Looking at Sean’s do-or-die expression, Kate had an epiphany.
Sean wasn’t going to this book signing for himself—he was representing Lord Blake.
He also finally understood why Lord Blake’s instructions had been so simple. The materials were never the point. What Lord Blake truly wanted was to see his stance.
A resolute attitude, just like Sean’s—to charge forward fearlessly, even knowing the path was fraught with danger!
"I understand!" Kate’s gaze gradually filled with fervor, as if something had been ignited within him. He said to Sean, "In five days, you just go to your book signing. I will be by your side the entire time, protecting you."
"Quill, is it?"
"If he dares to touch you, I’ll make sure it’s a one-way trip!"
’Alright. Handled.’
