Chapter 201: Chapter 201: Lines in the Sand
"Are you out of your mind?" asked Vanessa, her eyes narrowing into slits as her sultry demeanor evaporated into pure rage. "Do you think everything is just going to play out fine for you after you choose to go against Big Black’s interests?"
"I’m not going against anyone" said Alexander, his expression locking into stone. "I’m just choosing not to play your games."
Vanessa took a slow step forward, her voice dropping into a lethal, venomous whisper. "Let me adjust the terms of the offer then, Alexander. It’s either his life, or it’s yours."
Alexander’s entire body tensed. His hand dropped down by pure tactical instinct, his fingers hovering mere centimeters away from the grip of his concealed sidearm as his eyes locked onto her with a cold, predatory focus.
"In that case, I guess the apartment won’t be necessary anymore" said Alexander.
Without breaking eye contact, Alexander reached out, gripped the heavy handle of the metallic briefcase containing the 1.2 million dollars, and lifted it from the table. He turned on his heel and began walking toward the warehouse exit.
"You are making a fatal mistake, Alex...!" shouted Vanessa behind him, her voice echoing sharply off the concrete walls. "Do not think too highly of yourself! If you walk out those doors right now, your life becomes an open season of endless trouble!"
Alexander ignored her, pushing through the exit doors and stepping back out into the cool evening air. Every single nerve in his body was dialed to maximum capacity, his eyes scanning the shadows and corners for the slightest movement as he approached the Shelby. freewebnovel.cσ๓
Inside the dim warehouse, the heavy metallic click of a side door echoed through the empty space. A rumbling chuckle vibrated from the dark corridor as Big Black strode back into the room.
"So, the kid didn’t take your little bait, huh?" said Big Black with a low, amused laugh, his heavy silver rings catching the low light as he crossed his arms. "It looks like I officially won our little wager, girl. Come along now... I think I’ll celebrate by breaking in that tight little ass of yours tonight."
Vanessa ground her teeth together until her jaw throbbed, her knuckles turning white as she silently cursed that bastard Alexander for refusing to fall straight into her trap.
Alexander slammed the warehouse door shut behind him, threw the heavy briefcase into the back seat next to a sleeping Aria, and jumped into the driver’s seat. Without saying a single word, he fired up the Shelby’s supercharged engine and smashed his foot down on the gas pedal, the rear tires screeching violently as the car launched out of the loading zone.
His eyes darted frantically between the road ahead and the rearview mirror, paranoia gripping his chest like a vice. For the next thirty minutes, Alexander drove like a madman through the labyrinth of the financial district. He threw the muscle car into sharp, smoking drifts, cutting across narrow alleys, pulling sudden U-turns, and driving in circles to shake any possible tail.
The violent g-forces and the screeching rubber finally jarred Aria awake. She sat up in the back seat, blinking heavily as she held onto the door handle for dear life.
"Alex... what the hell is happening?!" asked Aria, her voice shaking from the sheer chaos of his driving.
Only after half an hour of relentless evasion did Alexander finally ease his foot off the accelerator, slowing the car down to a standard, aggressive cruise as he steered them toward Victoria’s high-end apartment complex.
"Are you finally going to tell us what the fuck is going on?" asked Victoria, her eyes locked onto his rigid profile, her initial annoyance turning into genuine concern.
"That goddamn bitch Vanessa tried to set me up" said Alexander, his voice tense and slightly breathless as his hands gripped the steering wheel with white knuckles. "I walked into that warehouse to deliver the final payment, and Big Black himself was standing right there with her. The moment he left the room, she tried to hand me a contract to assassinate Arthur Sinclair’s primary financial broker—along with his entire family. No questions, no witnesses, just total extermination."
"Did you take it?" asked Victoria, her breath catching.
"Hell no, I’m not an idiot" said Alexander, taking a sharp corner at high speed. "I demanded to know what the catch was, and she turned on me. She threatened my life, Vic. She told me it was either his life or mine, and that if I walked out, I’d be in endless trouble. I grabbed my 1.2 million back and bailed, but I know how these people work. Every single faction in this city has eyes on us right now, and I had to make sure we weren’t followed straight to your front door."
"That is strange..." said Victoria, her eyebrows knitting together as she stared thoughtfully out the passenger window. "They don’t usually operate with that level of blatant aggression... though considering everything that is currently happening across the world, I suppose I don’t even know what to expect anymore."
"Happening with what?" asked Alexander, glancing over at her as he pulled the Shelby into the secure, heavily gated entrance of her luxury high-rise.
"Nothing important" said Victoria, her tone instantly snapping back into a cold barrier as she shifted in her seat. "Just focus on driving."
Alexander wasn’t convinced for a single second, but he chose not to press the issue any further. They might have grown significantly closer over the course of the day, but at the end of the day, she was still his primary employer; he couldn’t simply force her to disclose information she clearly wanted to keep to herself.
He felt a sudden, heavy pressure tightening inside his chest, like an invisible hand trying to warn him about a looming disaster, but he couldn’t grasp exactly what it was.
"I have a really bad feeling about this" muttered Alexander, his voice low against the rumble of the engine as he steered the car into the underground parking structure.
