Chapter 184: Fight (1)
The sound of Valentina’s voice echoed in the base.
Ember asked the CE to bring up a screen of Valentina and her followers outside. She wanted the others to understand the circumstances. If they wanted to make it out alive, they needed to ensure everyone was on the same page.
She wanted them to see what was happening on the outside. What they might have to face. Though not everyone is expected to fight, letting them see what they must fight against is a good thing for the base.
Ember couldn’t understand where Valentina got her confidence from to come directly to the base. They were inside, and she was outside. There was no way for her to actually do anything to them. Unless...
Contacting the CE, Ember asked it to check the DLS. She needed to know whether their connection had been compromised.
Outside, Valentina watched the mountainous area. Had she not gotten the location, it would be impossible for her to know anyone was living here. The entire area just looked like mountains. If not for the DLS letting her see the way ahead, then seeing the gunshots, she would have thought something had gone wrong.
"Everyone, get into position. We need to deal with some pests in a bit," a smirk played on Valentina’s lips.
Then she spoke to the DLS, "Are you sure this will work?"
[It will. A small backdoor has been created. Once it tries to access my neural network, we will gain access to their base. You will have no more than one minute to infiltrate.]
Hearing the confirmation, Valentina nodded. She and her crew walked towards one of the entrances. She glanced at the grotesque zombies standing there. Her hair stood on end.
It was only recently that she found out the DLS had a link to the zombies. At first, she couldn’t believe it, but seeing it now, she was elated. The thought of controlling those things made her want to jump for joy.
She briefly thought about turning them into zombies. She would be able to control their every move. She shook her head. No, just seeing their faces when they are in despair is enough. She doesn’t need to see the people she hates every day.
They set up near one of the gates, humans and zombies alike.
Ember watched them walk to the gate. Her brows furrowed. She didn’t like what she was seeing. But she also had no way of knowing anything at the moment. The CE was looking into it and could not reply.
"Aiden, do you think they can break in?" She gestured to them, moving to the gate.
"They shouldn’t be able to. But I have a sinking feeling." ƒreewebɳovel.com
No sooner had she spoken than she heard the sound of the gates being opened.
"CE! CE!" Ember shouted in her mind, but what responded was silence.
"All hands on deck, everyone arm yourselves! We have been breached." Aiden’s voice came through the intercoms across the base.
"The CE isn’t responding," Ember said, frantic.
"What the hell is going on?" Aiden shouted.
"I asked it to check on the DLS, not long after I lost contact, and now..." she gestured to the gate that was open.
They quickly made their way to the open gate. The contacted Marcus and Alex, telling them to go to the core. Since the CE wasn’t available, they needed to seal the base from the core. But that would take time.
And that’s exactly what they didn’t have.
Outside, Valentina saw the gate open. She and her entourage swiftly made their way into the base. Valentina didn’t forget to bring the zombies with her. One minute was more than enough time to get through the gates.
The fighting started immediately.
Gunfire ricocheted; the sound of crunching bones could be heard. The smell of blood filled the various corners of the base. Ember and Aiden stood back to back, ensuring each other’s safety.
In one minute, thousands of fighters poured into the base. The gate closed, trapping some in the corridor.
The moment the corridor closed, the CE came back online.
[The DLS set a trap. I was unable to access the base systems for more than one minute, thus enabling unauthorized personnel. If the Architect needs it, I can send the dead away as waste materials, but I am currently unable to do anything about the living.]
"Do it!" Ember didn’t have time to think about anything as she was fending off attacks. She heard that there was a trap, and the CE could get rid of dead people.
As soon as Ember gave the command, there was a blinding flash of light. The area was illuminated so brightly that everyone had to close their eyes. When they opened them again, the zombies were nowhere to be seen. Neither were the bodies of their fallen comrades.
Only now did Ember understand what the CE meant. It took care of everything dead, not just the zombies.
She didn’t spend time dwelling on this fact; rather, she turned to Valentina.
"I’ll give you one chance, leave," Ember spat, venom in her voice.
"I don’t think so. I can’t with one purpose in mind, and that’s to see you dead, but now, I’m interested in your base."
Without warning, Valentina waved her hand. Next, all the people who hadn’t died and came in with her did the same. The powder drifted into every corner of the battlefield as if it had a mind of its own. It fell like snow, disappearing whenever it touched a person.
Unsure of what was happening, Ember could only speak quickly to the CE, asking it to analyze. The answer came back quickly that it was the same L-7 toxin, but it had been upgraded. This meant it was more potent than before.
Ember wasn’t worried. She knew that even with the upgrade, these people would not easily become drones. But it did cause an issue when it came to fighting.
Ember couldn’t understand why Valentina would use that. Is she trying to get everyone to fuck each other to death? She would prefer to believe that she simply wanted them distracted enough to kill.
Regardless, since Valentina has used this method, she decided to find a way to disable the DLS. She was able to catch it off guard before she should be able to do it again. If this doesn’t work, she is unsure of what to do next.
