Chapter 182: ...For Your Life
The small team made their way back to the base. This was not the time to argue. What they needed to do was ensure they got to safety.
It didn’t take long for them to arrive at the base. The zombies, though moving quickly, weren’t able to compete with the vehicle just yet. So they were more than able to get them off their tail.
"Get some rest," Aiden told the others. "Once we have more information, we will let you know."
Aiden knew they would want to know more. They understood what Ember had told them. If it was right, then there were several zombies heading their way. They needed to ensure they could protect themselves and the base.
Ember, walking to Marcus’s workshop, thought about what she knew. Were these zombies coming here because the DLS knew their location, or is it coincidental? She wanted to believe it was a coincidence. Because if it wasn’t, they were in for a lot of trouble.
Aiden noticed her troubled expression. "Something you want to tell me?"
They stopped not far from the workshop. Aiden scanned her face. Ember didn’t want to tell him, but she knew she had to.
"Our location is compromised."
Aiden’s face fell when he heard that. His anger rose. Is this what she had been hiding all day? His jaw clenched.
When Ember saw how angry he was, she knew she couldn’t get away with holding out on any other information. She didn’t want to in the first place; she just wasn’t sure how to tell him. Now she started, it was as if a dam burst.
She told Aiden about the fact that Valentina knew their location. She also told him that the DLS that Valentina had and the lust system she had before were part of the reason for doomsday. frёeωebɳovel.com
Aiden listened as Ember told him everything she knew. The more he listened, the more complex his emotions became.
"And you still trust the CE?" Aiden felt the CE might not be truthful in the long run. Since it was part of the lust system from before then, it might be hiding things.
"I trust it," Ember said, her voice steady. "It was the bracelet my mother left me. It’s been in our family for generations. It ate the lust system and told me all these things. It has been doing a lot of work behind the scenes. More than any of us really know. If not for it, there would be more work than we can handle. So far, it hasn’t actually done anything to hurt me. It hasn’t hurt you either.
I know it’s a flimsy excuse, but it didn’t have to tell me any of the things it did. The only way we know these things is because of it. It risked itself to fight the DLS before. I don’t think any of that is fake."
Aiden rubbed his brow. He didn’t know where this girl got her blind confidence in the CE. But he has no way of stopping the CE even if he wants to. All he can do is hope that Ember’s trust is in the hands of the right person. Or thing, whichever the CE is classified under.
Since they had clarified everything, they knocked and stepped into Marcus’s workshop. As they entered, they saw him poring over multiple cameras. His eyes flitted intently from one to the other. He didn’t even turn to see who had entered the room.
"Anything we should know?"
Marcus swiveled in his chair, coming face to face with Ember and Aiden. He was surprised to see them since he hadn’t heard them come in. But seeing them come back after so long, and they hadn’t changed, he knew they must already know the situation. He didn’t waste any time.
"Zombies are approaching. Not just a few. A whole fleet. If they were human, it would be a large settlement. And more appear to be joining. I just sent out a drone. They are all converging on our location, and they’re coming from all directions."
Hearing these words from Marcus, Ember’s hope of this being a coincidence shattered. Zombies would just run towards them for no reason. Not to mention, they are coming from so many directions at the same time.
She didn’t believe there wasn’t a black hand at work.
But how were they supposed to deal with them? If they did use the base defense, they would need to keep it maintained with CL. Were they going to ask people to fuck for their lives?
The thought made Ember chuckle to herself, but she knew now wasn’t the time for musings like this. They needed to come up with a solution.
"What’s security like?" Aiden asked.
"Right now, we can sustain the expenses. But not for the long term. If this is a swarm, we need to get everyone inside. Raising the defense barrier, we can last for a week. If we use the explosives and guns and send people to the watch tower first before using the defense, we have enough for a month. We can use the month to make some more CL to keep the defenses running."
"Looks like telling people to fuck for their lives is a real thing," Ember muttered.
But with the super hearing of the two men in the room, they heard every word. They eyed each other before shaking their heads, but they couldn’t exactly refute what she said because, in essence, that is exactly what they needed to do now.
"Keep watch and notify us every hour. Try to give us an accurate number. Get Luka to stay with you. The more eyes, the better."
With that, they left Marcus to his duties and headed over to Adrienne. They needed to know how much food they had available. freewebnøvel.coɱ
They also needed to check with the other to ensure the overall wellness of the base before alerting others.
They moved quickly, ensuring everything was ready in case of an emergency.
