Chapter 39: I Like You

Two years ago...

"Congratulations on your engagement, Mr. Clark and Miss Lewis!"

"You two are perfect together, like a match made in heaven!"

Guests of Victor and Katarina approached them happily, congratulating and praising them to the high heavens—loud enough to disturb even the cherubs sleeping. Under the sparkling chandelier and lively chatter, the couple naturally stood out.

Cassian stood in the corner of the grand event hall, his champagne glass close to his lips as he studied everything around him.

"Cassian, what are you doing here in the corner?"

"Of course, Cassian has to stay to the side and give the limelight to his brother. They get along well, after all. And tonight is Victor Clark’s night and their pack’s future Luna." freewēbnoveℓ.com

"Cassian, do you want to dance?"

Around Cassian were women trying to talk to him and get his attention. But since he kept ignoring them and simply watching his brother, they ended up chatting among themselves.

They’re so annoying, he thought, tuning out their voices. Can’t they see I’m not interested?

A shallow sigh escaped him, though he wasn’t surprised.

Cassian was used to being surrounded, especially since he had skyrocketed to stardom. His popularity had shot up like a jet, mainly because of his looks. Not that he didn’t know his greatest asset, but that wasn’t what he cared about.

Right now, all he could think of was Victor and his now-fiancée, Katarina.

Isn’t he rushing to get engaged? he wondered. What did he even see in her?

Katarina was beautiful... at least, that was what people said. But in Cassian’s eyes, she looked like a mere stick figure with a balloon for a head. On top of that, there was something about Katarina he didn’t like.

Cassian couldn’t put it into words. Even when Victor had nothing but good things to say about his fiancée, and everyone else only praised her, Cassian just couldn’t feel the same.

"Well." He shook his head and straightened, finally turning to the ladies flocking around him. The moment he gave them a smile, they stopped talking, mesmerized by his beauty.

"Ladies, I’ll excuse myself for a moment," he said with a charming smile. "See you later."

The women’s mouths fell open as they nodded, eyes sparkling as if the air itself had begun to shimmer.

Not dwelling on their reaction, Cassian made his way through the crowd until he managed to step outside. He was only here to celebrate Victor and Katarina’s engagement. There was no reason for him to linger. He planned to return to his hotel, which was twenty minutes away.

But on his way out, Cassian paused in the open hallway.

He turned and spotted a figure crawling toward the pond within the premises.

"Huh?" He furrowed his brows, watching the person get closer to the water.

Cassian glanced around, only to see that the area was empty. Compared to the crowded hall, the contrast was stark. When his gaze landed on the woman again, he gasped.

"Is she... trying to kill herself?!"

The second those words slipped from his mouth, his breath hitched. He moved before he could think, jumping over the railing and rushing toward her.

In the next second, he tackled her from the side.

"Don’t!" he yelled, holding her down, his arms wrapped around her frame. "Life is short—don’t end it! It’s going to end anyway! Just wait a little longer!"

He yelled everything he could think of, hoping something—anything—would sound motivational enough to stop someone truly desperate.

Cassian hugged her tighter, noticing how small her body felt in his arms. But he didn’t dwell on it as he huffed, his nerves gradually calming.

"I’m saying..." he whispered. "There’s more to life. If you just hold on a little longer... you’ll eventually see it."

Silence followed his words as the quiet night breeze carried them away.

"What in the world are you talking about?" the woman’s voice finally reached his ears.

"I’m saying!" he yelled again. "Don’t give up!"

Cassian winced slightly, unsure whether he was saying the right things. He had never encountered someone trying to end their life before, only heard stories.

Then, a thought struck him. freewēbnoveℓ.com

My face!

As silly as it was, he thought that if she saw his face, she might understand there was more to life. His fans often told him they felt better just looking at him. Maybe that would help.

With that in mind, Cassian carefully loosened his hold and planted a hand on the grass. Slowly, he pushed himself up, determined to save a life.

But the moment he blinked and looked down at the person beneath him, his breath stopped.

There, lying under him, was Lynsandra.

Her cheeks were flushed, her eyes lazy, her hair a mess beneath her head. The first few buttons of her shirt were undone, and from the way he had tackled her, the fabric had shifted—revealing her cleavage and the lace of her bra.

His mouth fell open, flustered by her striking beauty.

He had thought he would dazzle someone with his looks, but instead, he was the one left mesmerized.

"Uh?" she muttered, her face painted with confusion and irritation.

Cassian snapped out of his daze at the strong scent of alcohol. She reeked of it.

"Oh...?" Lynsandra blinked lazily, studying the face hovering over her. Then the corners of her lips curled upward. She reached out, grabbed his chest, and before he knew it, she flipped their positions.

Straddling him, she chuckled as she pinned him down effortlessly. Slamming a hand beside his face, she lowered her head until their faces were inches apart.

"I like your face," she blurted out, her other hand tracing his face with her fingers. Her eyes followed her hand as it slid down to his neck.

Without a word, she squeezed his throat.

Cassian grabbed her wrist instinctively, but he couldn’t pull her off.

She’s so strong! he thought, his panic rising. But when his eyes met hers again, his cheeks flushed at the raw lust flickering there.

She was strangling him, and yet for some reason, that look in her eyes stirred something in him.

Then, slowly, the corners of her mouth curved.

"Interesting," she whispered as she leaned closer. "I’m trying to kill you, and yet you’re getting hard instead."

Her eyes squinted as she chuckled.

"I like you."
