Chapter 47: Above The Clouds

Sierra continued reading the book in her hands. It was about the legend of dragons that once roamed the lands. When Ida saw it, she took an interest in it too. It was a popular tale in Drakin, read to children before they went to bed.

"What does any of this have to do with your blessing from Dravin?" Ida asked after Sierra explained why she was reading it.

In the book, there was mention of a group of humans who successfully befriended some of the dragons. They lived and fought alongside them, becoming close friends and comrades. Once, the dragons were in great danger, and the humans came to their rescue.

To thank them, the dragons gave them a blessing and infused them with dragon blood. This gave the humans powers beyond their wildest imaginations. Some even gained the ability to transform into a dragon for a short period of time.

They could alter their physical appearance, bend the elements to their will, and inherited heightened intelligence. In one of the Chapters of the book, a scene where one of the humans gained wings and learned to fly was explained in detail.

"Maybe I have the ability to fly," Sierra muttered to herself.

Tempted to give it a try, she climbed out of her room window to get up on the roof. When Ida saw what she was trying to do, she tried to pull Sierra in; thinking she was about to attempt something crazy. But Sierra was one step ahead of her. She was already on the roof tiles.

"Your Highness! It’s too dangerous, you’ll get yourself hurt!" Ida exclaimed as called out to her from the open window.

"Don’t worry, Ida. I’ll be alright. A broken bone or two won’t be an issue," she joked as she winked at her before leaving.

Sierra proceeded to climb up the highest point. She had memorized the passages in the book. She recited the steps from memory beneath her breath. She kept her feet apart and closed her eyes. She imagined a pair of wings sprouting from her back.

Channeling the energy through her body, she whispered beneath her breath, "Dravin, lend me your wings."

A soft glow of light formed beneath Sierra’s feet. It was a spell circle written in ancient symbols. Moments later, Sierra felt as if something had grown out of her back. There was no pain, only slight discomfort.

When she opened her eyes, she turned her head back and gasped in shock. On her back, were a pair of pearl white wings. Under the moonlight, it seemed to have a rainbow sheen.

"But how do I-" the moment Sierra willed herself to take flight, her wings began to flap.

Sierra was lifted into the air. She gasped in shock, finding herself floating in mid-air. She looked up at the open sky above her. With a grin on her face, she took off into the night. Higher and higher she went until she broke through the cloud layers.

A sea of stars accompanied the brightly lit moon. Sierra was mesmerized by the scene before her, she had never seen anything quite like this before. Little did she know, someone was observing her from afar, with a pair of black wings of his own.

"Sweetling, you sure are full of surprises," he whispered to himself with a grin.

Sierra’s ears pricked. She turned around to look behind her. Though she did not hear his exact words, she picked up on his voice. But it was too dark to see anything that far away from her so Sierra paid it no mind.

She flew through the sky with ease, getting used to the weightlessness she felt along with the cool night breeze. For the first time in a while, Sierra felt truly free. If only she could feel this way all the time.

With the adrenaline flowing through her veins, Sierra flew through the air at top speed. She wanted to see just how far and fast she could go. But as her energy was depleted, her movements were beginning to be sluggish.

Maintaining the wings and movement sapped her energy and soon Sierra finds her vision blurring. She paused mid-air, as she placed her hand on her forehead. The wings on her back began to disappear.

"Wha-"

Before she had time to react, Sierra found herself free-falling through the sky. She watched as the distance between her and the moon grew. She wanted to call out for help as gravity drew her towards the ground.

But who would come to her aid?

"Hel-" she could not even speak clearly anymore. freёwebnovel.com

"Sierra!"

Someone was calling out to her. Who was it? Sierra darted her eyes around, trying to locate the source of the voice. But their movements were swift, far beyond anything she could comprehend. It was not until he was right above her, that she realized who it was. fɾēewebnσveℓ.com

"Alistair?"

She reached out her hands, hoping to grab hold of his as she continued freefalling through the sky.

Alistair caught hold of Sierra in his arms. They gazed straight into each other’s eyes. Alistair unfurled his wings, allowing the both of them to ride the airflow and suspended themselves in the sky.

"Are you alright? Are you hurt?" he asked. His voice was filled with worry.

He reached out to touch her cheek. His hand was cold to the touch, while her cheek was warm. The difference in temperature surprised both of them. But neither of them shied away from one another.

"I... I’m alright. You saved my life. Thank you, Your Majesty," Sierra thanked him in haste.

She did not know what else to say, just a moment ago she thought her life was about to end. Seeing that she was alright and able to speak, Alistair heaved a sigh of relief. His cheeky smile returned to his face as he held her close to his body. If only he could hold her so close for eternity.

Though his hands were cold, his body felt warm as she leaned against his chest.
