Chapter 125: Out Of Reach

That was the best they could do in their circumstances. Myra and Taita could see how sad she looked. To help keep her distracted, they introduced Sierra to their family.

To her surprise, all of them welcomed Sierra with open arms, unlike other royals who had not even glanced or spoken to her.

"We’ve heard so much about you from Myra’s letters, Princess Sierra. Thank you so much for helping Myra. We’re in your debt," Myra’s parents thanked her profusely.

Taita’s parents thanked her too.

"You’re all too kind. I simply did what was right." Sierra replied shyly with a smile.

CRASH!

Everyone was stunned. Screams filled the air as chaos erupted in the ballroom. All the princesses were surprised too. Sierra looked around the ballroom in shock. She quickly pinpointed the source of the crash sounds at the start.

Assassins had entered the ballroom by crashing in from the windows. All of them were dressed in black and had their swords drawn. However, it seemed like they only had one target in mind. They came for Alistair.

"What in Gaeia is going on?!" Myra exclaimed in shock.

Sierra turned to Ida, asking her to guide everyone to safety.

"Princess what about-"

"There’s no time! Don’t worry about me, go!"

Ida leaped into action at once and did as Sierra asked. Sierra reached into the secret pockets of her dress and drew her swords as she made her way towards the assassins. When they saw her coming, they looked stunned.

Something was amiss.

But in light of the situation, she pushed it to the back of her mind. By now, the royal guards were on high alert too. They were also fighting off the assassins. Alistair was facing six of them at a time.

"Princess Sierra! We’re here on your orders!"

Sierra paused for a moment in shock as she glared at the assassin.

"What did you just say?"

"We’re here on your orders! To assassinate the King!"

Her blood ran cold as her gaze shifted to Alistair. Their eyes met.

The royal guards heard what the assassin had said. Now, they were coming for Sierra. It was a set up. She had fallen for someone’s set up and she needed answers.

First, she dispatched as many assassins as she could. However, more and more of them were pouring into the ballroom. It was nearly impossible for her to keep up with all of them. She wanted to get closer to Alistair to make sure she was safe. But no matter how hard she tried, she still couldn’t do so.

She changed her strategy on the fly. She needed answers. She needed greater clarity on the situation. Sierra grabbed hold of the assassin who spouted the lies.

She wanted to end his life where he stood but she needed answers.

"What are you talking about?! Who’s really behind this? Speak the truth!" freёwebnovel.com

"Your Highness! These were your orders, the orders you gave General Leon to carry out!"

Sierra let go of the assassin, horrified by what he was saying. Confused as to what was going on, Sierra yelped in pain as she felt a blade thrust through her stomach. She collapsed to the ground as blood spewed from her mouth.

Her vision was beginning to blur as blood pooled around the stab wound.

"Sierra!" Alistair was calling for her.

"Your Majesty! Don’t go near her! It’s too dangerous!"

"What are you talking about! She’s-"

Other voices came flooding in.

"She plotted to kill Alistair?"

"Is that why she got close to him? To gain his trust?"

"Arrest everyone involved! We must find out what is going on!"

Sierra’s mind was a mess but one thing stood out. She looked all around. She was surrounded by royal guards now. But in the distance, she could see that Alistair was safe. Still, she could not heave a sigh of relief. Not yet.

She recalled what the assassin was saying to her.

"... the orders you gave General Leon to carry out..."

Realizing her father was in danger, Sierra struggled to her feet. She knew how it looked. She knew it looked as if she was trying to escape the scene.

"Stand down! You’re under arrest!" The head of the royal guards yelled at her.

"No," Sierra muttered beneath her breath as she got back up on her feet.

She fought her way through the royal guards, careful not to kill any of them. They were simply doing their job. She could not blame any of them for wanting to stand in her way. She glanced over to the doors of the ballroom. They were already being blocked by royal guards.

Her only escape route left was through the balcony.

But even that was blocked too.

"Window."

Sierra made a run for it. Her ears were ringing and her heart was pounding in her chest. She could barely think straight at that moment. But at the back of her mind, she could hear someone calling out her name.

It was Alistair.

Sierra did not look back. She couldn’t. She couldn’t look him in the eye. Not until she figured out what was happening.

"I’m sorry. But I... I have to go," those were her last words to him as she charged towards the glass window.

Glass shards flew in every possible direction as Sierra protected her head as she charged straight into it. She summoned her wings and took to the sky at once. That was the only way for her to get out of there.

Out of reach.

It was night time. While it provided the perfect cover for her, it proved to make her search difficult. Sierra prayed and hoped her father was out on the road back to Cair by now. She scoured the known route and eventually found him and his small entourage of guards he had travelled with.

She immediately landed before him, frightening their horses.

"Father..." Sierra winced in pain. She could barely get up to her feet now.

"Sierra? Sierra!" Leon dismounted from his horse at once to come to her aid.

But his daughter shook her head, refusing his help. Leon was in shock when he realized she was bleeding. He had only parted ways with her a short while ago.

"Who did this! Sierra tell me! I swear I will-"

Sierra gripped onto his hand tightly, "There’s there’s no time."
