Chapter 26: It’s You!

’We’re going to die.’

At that moment, Viva came to an daming realization! It was like a chicken being led to the slaughterhouse, or a rat standing in the middle of a lion’s den! Just by staring at this beast, Viva knew that there was no way any of them were going to survive against something like this! This was where they were all going to die!

"T-Theresa? What did you do to Theresa!?"

The dragon turned to the left as a voice screamed at him, and he saw Jacques sitting against the wall and staring up at him in fear. The dragon’s lips split into a wide smile, and he came down to Jacques’ level!

"It was you, wasn’t it! You were the one who freed me! I can’t believe I owe my freedom to a human! Hahah! Did you enjoy those years of speaking to your wife!?"

"W-What are you!? Where’s Theresa!?"

The dragon preened.

"So that’s her name. Theresa. How gentle! Tell me this, human: did you enjoy speaking to your wife once again? All the people you killed with this desire of yours? They must be rolling in their graves knowing that you killed them for something so selfish!? Hahahah! I can’t believe you used the statue without even knowing what it was meant for! Did you think summoning your wife from the other side was done for free!? Every time you used the statue to call her, you were harvesting souls for my freedom! To bring me back! How does it feel!? How does it feel to know that you killed dozens of people just to see your precious wife again!? Hahahah!"

At this point, the dragon was simply taunting Jacques with its mad laughter, and the dragon enjoyed every moment of anguish it saw on Jacques’ face! Jacques had an expression of disbelief on his face! It looked like someone had just killed his most precious person, and he stared at the dragon with wide, unseeing eyes!

Jacques had searched for the [Statue of Eternal Rest] years ago after his wife died because he heard that it would allow him to speak to her again. After finding the artefact, Jacques would choose specific days to summon the dead soul of his wife, and even though he could only look at her without being able to hear anything she said, Jacques felt like his life had meaning again just from seeing her! Jacques was not an evil man, and he had a very soft heart, so hearing that he had been killing people every time he used the artefact was almost too much for him to bear! freewёbnoνel.com

The dragon’s laughter continued for a long time as he leaned over Jacques, and Jacques soon started to cry from the anguish! But the moment the dragon saw this, his laughter died, and he said.

"I’m bored now."

Slash!

The dragon slashed its hand across Jacques’ head, and blood sprayed through the air and painted the cave wall red!

"NO!"

A voice shouted from the other side of the cave, and the dragon turned to see August struggling to stand with an angry look on his face. August had a massive cut on his side that was bleeding, but there was an intensity in his eyes as he glared at the dragon, and his hands glowed with red magic circles as a massive fireball burst to life on his palms!

"I’ll buy time for you all! You all need to get out of here at once!"

August shouted to the officers around him, and he allowed his magic to surge to life as the fire increased in intensity! August knew that there was no way they could defeat an enemy like this! August was only a Master Mage of the Fourth Realm, but the power August could feel from this demihuman was immeasurable!

’Is he in the sixth realm? No, he might be higher than that. I can’t even measure his power.’

"A demihuman? Why do you stand beside the humans like they are your allies? Are you a traitor to the cause?"

The dragon turned to face August fully, and it began moving toward him with slow, purposeful steps! August could feel his breath quickening the longer he stood in front of this beast! It felt like his heart was about to rip itself out of his chest from how hard it was beating, and the flames on his palm were slowly growing weaker as the fear consumed him!

The dragon looked around the room with a more critical gaze, and he was shocked when he saw both humans and demihumans dressed in the same uniform and fighting together! The dragon couldn’t believe what he was seeing! Humans and demihumans were fighting together!? What in the world happened in the past ten years! Did the demihumans really agree to join forces with these pathetic, worthless humans!?

"YOU FOOLS!"

DOON!

A surge of mana shot through the cave as the dragon’s mana surged to new life, and August felt all his bravado leaving his body as the intense pressure pushed him to his knees! The pressure pressed the officers down to the ground, and Viva could feel her consciousness slipping as the dragon began to rant!

"Do you not know what we fought for!? How dare you stand beside the humans, you traitors! The humans are nothing but cattle! Livestock with no worth other than to serve as our entertainment!"

The dragon’s mana grew even more oppressive as his anger grew and multiple officers had already passed out from the intensity! But before the pressure could kill all of them, there was another pressure that flowed out from behind them and pushed back against the oppressive mana!

DOON!

Viva gasped and sucked in a lot of air as the new pressure gave her some breathing room, and she coughed as the sound of footsteps echoed from down the tunnel, and a nonchalant voice spoke up from the darkness.

"I should’ve known it was you, Beelzebub. I suppose this is my bad."

Percy appeared from within the darkness with a small stack of books in one hand and his other hand behind his back. Viva was still on the floor, but she had enough energy to turn and look at the librarian in shock! There was an air of calmness around him that did not match the intense tension in the cave, and Viva was shocked when Beelzebub took multiple steps back with wide eyes!

Beelzebub could never forget this mana! Even though it had been ten years since he last met him, and this was the first time he had ever seen his face, it was impossible for Beelzebub not to remember this feeling! There was only one man who could release such an oppressive aura without any effort at all! It was Verati!

"IT’S YOU! YOU—!"

Percy raised his free hand and made Beelzebub stay silent before Percy turned to Viva and the other officers and waved his hand over their bodies. Multiple red magic circles formed under the officers, and Viva blinked in surprise as she suddenly vanished from the cave and reappeared beside the carriage outside! The healers that came with the group immediately ran to help the unconscious officers, but Viva pushed the healer that came to her away and looked back at the mansion in shock! What was going on in there!?

Back in the underground cavern, Percy finally turned back to focus on Beelzebub, and then Percy took in the scenery in front of him. The broken statue on the floor was still releasing a steady pulse of mana, and the headless man leaning against the wall painted a perfect picture of what had happened.

"So you hid inside the artefact and pretended to be dead. I suppose that is a fitting action for an insect like you."
